It marked the Golden Flyers' ninth post-season appearance -- and the first since 1999 -- in 16 seasons under Daley, who has 223 career victories. The Golden Flyers displayed noteworthy improvement last season, finishing 17-10 overall and 10-4 in the Empire 8 Conference. Fortified with a solid batch of returning players and an influx of new talent, Daley hopes the Golden Flyers can challenge for the conference title in 2002-03. In 1996-97, Daley guided the Golden Flyers to an 18-10 record and the championship of the ECAC Upstate Tournament. In 1997-98, the Golden Flyers made their first NCAA tournament appearance in eight years, won the championship of the Empire 8 Conference, and finished 19-8 overall. Then in 1998-99, the Golden Flyers bypassed the rebuilding process by finishing 15-11 and reaching the ECAC Upstate tournament. Respected by his peers, Daley has twice been named Coach of the Year in the Empire 8 Conference. Daley came to Nazareth for the start of the 1986-87 season and guided the team to a 22-6 record and a berth in the NCAA Division III tournament. They've reached post-season play eight more times since then, including two other NCAA berths (1990, 1998). A graduate of St. Bonaventure University, Daley has more than three decades of coaching experience. He coached high school basketball in Ohio for 14 years, including nine seasons as a head coach. He also has coached football, swimming, track and cross country at the high school level and tennis at the college level. In 1979, Daley moved into the college coaching ranks, becoming an assistant coach to Pete Lonergan at Divison I Niagara University. He stayed with the Purple Eagles for six seasons and helped produce a 19-10 record and a trip to the finals of the North Atlantic Conference tournament in 1981-82. An outstanding clinician, Daley has been invited to speak at numerous camps and clinics. In addition, he is the director of the Nazareth College Basketball Camp during the summer. In addition to coaching basketball at Nazareth, Daley serves as assistant athletic director and is active in game management and scheduling. A native of Pittsburgh, Daley cheers for the baseball Pirates and the football Steelers. He resides in Henrietta with his wife, Debbie, and daughter, Lea. C O A C H I N G S T A F F Toby Brown, Associate Head Coach Well recognized in the area college basketball scene, Toby Brown is in his sixth season with the Golden Flyers and his second as the team's associate head coach. He came to Nazareth in 1997 after seven auspicious seasons as an assistant under Bob McVean at Rochester Institute of Technology. A native of Waterloo, Brown helped R.I.T. to four 20-win seasons in his seven years as an assistant there. In 1996-97, the Tigers finished 24-4 and reached the NCAA Division III tournament for the third consecutive year. In his five seasons at Nazareth, the Golden Flyers have made three post-season appearances and won one conference title. Brown was a standout player at Waterloo High, then played for two seasons at Alfred State before graduating with a degree in physical education from Cortland State. He currently teaches health and physical education at the Norman Howard School in Rochester. Chris Amesbury, Assistant Coach Chris Amesbury returns for his second season as a part-time assistant coach as well as head coach of the Golden Flyers' JV team. A 2001 Nazareth graduate, Amesbury played four basketball seasons for the Golden Flyers and was a freshman on the 1997-98 team that won the Empire 8 title and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Amesbury played high school basketball at Gates Chili, where he earned team MVP honors and Monroe County League All-Star recognition as a senior in 1996-97. He graduated from Nazareth with a degree in chemistry and now teaches full-time at his alma mater, Gates Chili. Jason Hermance, Assistant Coach After serving four seasons as the basketball team's manager, Jason Hermance takes over as a part-time assistant coach for the 2002-2003 season. A native of Galway, N.Y., Hermance graduated from Nazareth in 2002 with a degree in history. He is working toward a Master's degree in computer education from Nazareth and serves as a graduate assistant in the Golden Flyers' sports information office. Hermance has displayed noteable proficiency with the computer and is largely responsible for the design of Nazareth's athletic web page. 2 0 0 2-2 0 0 3 P R E V I E W Golden Flyers Hope to Compete for E8 Title. Nazareth Looks to contend with 4 returning starters There are days that Nazareth Coach Mike Daley glances out at the basketball court during practice and marvels at the collection of talent that he has assembled for the 2002-03 season. He sees Jimmy Evans effortlessly launching three-point shots and Fran Zablocki forcefully ripping down rebounds. There is a fine line, of course, between practice and perfection. If only the games themselves could be so simple. While Daley likes his team s chances for 2002-03, he is cautiously confident when sizing up the Golden Flyers with other foes in the Empire 8 Conference. It s going to be a battle right to the end, said Daley, who begins his 17th season with the Golden Flyers on the heels of last year s 17-10 showing that included a 10-4 mark in the Empire 8. I would like to think that we ll be right in the hunt, but the league is very talented from top to bottom. Nazareth placed second in the standings last year, and with the return of four starters, there s no reason to think that the Golden Flyers won t again vie for the league title and the coveted automatic berth to the NCAA Division III Tournament. Mike Brennan, Student Assistant Coach Cape Vincent, New York Caridad Coakley, Team Manager Bronx, New York Senior Fran Zablocki averaged 12.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game for the Golden Flyers in 2001-2002. First and foremost there will be match-up problems caused by Evans, the 6-foot-5 senior who is a threat to score whenever he touches the ball. He led the team in scoring (19.6 ppg.), assists (4.1 apg.), and steals (1.9 spg.) last season, and set a single-season school record with 87 three-point baskets. He s as good a player as we ve had here, Daley said. As long as he stays focused, he will be a difficult player to stop. Zablocki, a 6-foot-6 senior, also played well last season when he averaged 12.2 points and 8.3 rebounds per game. He and Evans give the Golden Flyers a formidable inside-outside tandem that few teams can match. Zablocki should get help from a pair of powerful newcomers in Ryan Shipley, a 6-foot-8 sophomore, and Justin Fladd, a 6-foot-7, 260-pound freshman. Daley hopes that combination will make up for the lone departed starter, Jesse Lisiecka, a two-time Empire 8 All-Star and the team s leading rebounder the last two seasons. Also returning to the frontcourt is David Gary, a 6-foot-5 senior who has been a solid reserve for three seasons. Nazareth College Golden Flyers Cheerleading 2002-2003 Front Row (left to right) Asisa Guinyard, Shavonne Gaines, Bethany Nickoloff, Cyndy Quinones, Jessica-Kimble Dodge, Nkechi Jelks, Crystal Hanna Back Row N/A, Monique Nicastro, Jessica Allen, Caitlyn O'Donnell, Jenn Preston, Twilisha McClelland, Jessica Young Missing Dawn Douglas. Evans will play a prominent role in the backcourt and there is adequate depth, marked by the return of Jake Steck, a 6-foot-1 junior, and the addition of Brian Kozel, a 6-foot-2 junior transfer from Broome Community College. Steck has been a solid contributor the past two seasons, last year averaging 9.7 points per game, while Kozel averaged better than 17 points per game last season at Broome. Sophomore Tim Slakas shared time at point guard last season and will be pushed this year for playing time by sophomore Richard Orlicz, who started four times in 2001-02 and contributed 4.4 points per game, while knocking down 16 of 19 free throws. Juniors Torrey Hobbs and Bret Kearney also will be competing for playing time. Other new players are freshmen Mike DeBlois, Matt Groot, and Caswell Smith, all of whom come equipped with strong scholastic backgrounds. DeBlois was a standout player at Fayetteville-Manlius near Syracuse, while Groot excelled at Canandaigua Academy. A native of Brooklyn, Smith played a key role at Xaverian High School. I m hoping that we can be a more physical team than we ve been in the past, said Daley, who will be assisted by Toby Brown, Chris Amesbury, and Jason Hermance. We have better size and hopefully more offensive options than we ve had in the past. Nazareth plays a 14-game conference schedule and will host the annual Joe King Tournament Dec. 6-7. Senior Jimy Evans was the Empire 8 Conference's leading scorer in 2001-2002, averaging 19.6 points per game. 3 4
