Laboratory Influence on Strategic Planning It is your responsibility to show the value of laboratory services to the overall organization. You should have thorough knowledge of the strategic directions of your organization. You need to take a broader, more comprehensive view than just what affects your laboratory! How Do You Get The Lab Involved? Show an interest in the Organizational Strategic Plan. Develop a Laboratory Strategic Plan that supports the greater Organization Plan. Develop talking points on what the lab contributes to overall patient care and to the finances of the organization. Have data to back up those talking points. Develop your elevator speech. 4
Learn and be conversant on healthcare reform, realities and issues. Learn about ACOs, HIEs and RHIOs. These buzz words aren t t going away. Find out what is going on in your region about these specific issues (even though they aren t about lab per se). Join organizations such as the American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) so that you know what your C suite is learning and hearing about.
