Vice President for Student Affairs and Commandant of Cadets Marion Military Institute, the official state military college of Alabama, has been preparing young men and women for successful civilian and military careers since 1842. The well-respected two-year college seeks an experienced leader to serve as Vice President for Student Affairs and Commandant of Cadets (VPSA). One of four vice presidents at MMI, the VPSA reports directly to the College s President. The Opportunity The position of Vice President for Student Affairs and Commandant of Cadets provides an exceptional opportunity for a military officer who wants to continue to contribute to a greater cause through the education and preparation of the next generation of civilian and military leaders. The VPSA will be responsible for integrating the valuable military experience with the College s strong academic program. Additionally, this leadership position provides a unique opportunity to create, advance, and shape a program over time. One of the priorities for VPSA will be to develop and establish a leadership institute that will become a hallmark of the Marion Military educational experience. The VPSA leads a comprehensive student affairs division, which is fully integrated into the educational mission of the institute. The officer supervises a staff of more than 20 employees including the Assistant Commandant of Cadets; Assistant to the Commandant for Training and Support; three cadet company Trainer, Advisor, and Counselor (TAC) officers; the Director for Leadership and Career Initiatives; the Coordinator for Student Leadership and Service Learning; the Chief of Security; and the Fitness Center Coordinator. The office of the VPSA supports both traditional and non-traditional roles and responsibilities commensurate with military higher education. These roles include cadet life, safety, security, Title IX compliance and reporting requirements, cadet morale and good order and discipline, health services, residence life, cadet daily activities and operations, military drill and ceremonies, physical fitness, and leadership and character development. Additionally, the VPSA provides oversight of all cadet clubs and organizations, intramural sports, and numerous special events. The duties and responsibilities for this position are designed to support, challenge, and advance a comprehensive approach to cadet development in support of MMI s mission. The integration of this Mission Statement Marion Military Institute, a two-year public institution, educates and trains the Corps of Cadets in order that each graduate is prepared for success at four-year institutions, including the service academies, with emphasis on providing intellectual, moral-ethical, physical-athletic, and leadership development experiences in a military environment. www.marionmilitary.edu 2

Vice President for Student Affairs and Commandant of Cadets comprehensive approach to learning is realized through MMI s Cadet Development System, which provides both a formal and informal strategy for learning inclusive of the classroom, athletic field, and residence life. This senior officer plays a key role in the implementation of the College s strategic plan and the overall coordination of college functions. The VPSA regularly interfaces with campus colleagues including, the Executive Vice President, Vice President for Business and Financial Affairs, Vice President for Institutional Advancement, Chief Instructional Officer, Athletic Director, and Director of Admissions to advance MMI s on-going operational and strategic initiatives. Essential Functions: In addition to adhering to general policies and guidelines specified by Marion Military Institute and the Alabama State Board of Education, the successful candidate also will perform the following duties. Execute broad authority and responsibility regarding student life to include Corps daily operations; cadet leadership; core values; military customs and courtesies; and cadet conduct and discipline Obtain presidential concurrence on all changes specific to cadet discipline Maintain general oversight of all student organizations and provide direct supervision for the White Knights Precision Drill Team, Swamp Fox Military Tactics Team, and Honor Guard Maintain the master calendar, in coordination with the Executive Vice President and the Chief Instructional Officer Oversee the physical training program for cadets in the leadership education track and those pursuing a service academy appointment Edit the Cadet Manual, MMI s student handbook, annually Oversee the Cadet Honor Council Direct the MMI Honor and Respect Character Education Program, in coordination with the Director for Leadership and Career Initiatives, as well as the Chief Instructional Officer Direct the cadet peer counseling program Coordinate, with the Executive Vice President and the Chief Instructional Officer, and execute the cadet intensive training cycle (ITC), MMI s week-long student orientation program that incorporates academic and personal counseling and assessment as well as military skills in order to promote self-confidence, teambuilding, and a smooth transition into the military college environment Provide administrative, logistical, and human resource support for the implementation of MMI s Quality Enhancement Plan, as required Provide oversight and/or support for numerous operational and strategic events to include all cadet ceremonies and parades, the ITC graduation ceremony, Parents Weekend, Alumni Weekend, spring formal, commencement, and other events as directed by the President or Executive Vice President Coordinate frequently with MMI s Director of Athletics to de-conflict activities and initiatives in support of MMI varsity athletics Supervise all intramural sports Oversee the operational upkeep of the MMI indoor pistol range Serve on numerous College committees specific to all facets of the College mission Implement both qualitative and quantitative assessment programs to measure cadet life growth and development that assists in the www.marionmilitary.edu 3

Vice President for Student Affairs and Commandant of Cadets advancement of MMI s institutional effectiveness program Maintain departmental operational budget Collaborate with the Director of Facilities pertaining to the maintenance and serviceability of five residence halls with a maximum capacity of 500 residents Oversee the maintenance and upkeep of the cadet fitness center Supervise operations relative to campus safety and security Direct the federal regulatory training and reporting requirements pertaining to campus safety and security, including the Clery Act and the Violence Against Women Act, in coordination with MMI s Compliance Officer Support the academic leadership concentration, in conjunction with the Chief Instructional Officer, and advise the President on matters relative to cadet leadership and character development initiatives and programs Qualifications Candidates must have at least a master s degree and prior service in the U.S, Armed Forces (Active, National Guard or Reserves) at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel or maritime forces (U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard) at the rank of Commander or higher. Marion Military Institute Truth Honor Service Preferred Qualifications Previous experience at a military college, academy, or university Previous experience in a traditional higher education setting Previous experience as a professor of military science, professor of naval science, or professor of aerospace science Command experience at battalion or brigade/regiment Due to the magnitude of the duties and responsibilities commensurate with this position, the VPSA is required to reside on the MMI campus. Other requirements include wearing the appropriate service uniform on a daily basis and adhere to that service s military uniform and grooming standards. The VPSA must be able and willing to work evenings and weekends, as necessary. Historically a private institution, MMI became a member of the Alabama Community College System in 2006 through an act of legislation. Cadets from 39 states attend MMI to establish a strong foundation for future study and to take advantage of its military training programs. Colonel David J. Mollahan, U.S. Marine Corps (retired), has served as President of Marion Military Institute since 2009. MMI s educational experience is built upon a top-notch and robust academic program that contributes significantly to its high success rate for cadet acceptance and transfer to four-year universities. The College has a nearly 83 percent acceptance rate for those qualified cadets seeking appointments to each of the service academies. What contributes to this success is MMI s unique whole-person approach to education that is embedded in its military tradition. The military experience emphasizes education in physical fitness, moral fitness, and leadership. Cadets learn critical thought, judgement, decisionmaking, and character development in conjunction with their academic studies. Vice President for Student Affairs and Commandant of Cadets Cadets are prepared for success in any future educational institution they go on to attend. More importantly, they are prepared for success in life. MMI is one of only five military junior colleges in the United States that offers unique military training programs: the U.S. Army s two-year Early Commissioning Program and the General Bruce K. Holloway Service Academy Preparatory Program. The Early Commissioning Program is an Army Reserve Officer Training Corps program through which qualified students can earn a commission as a Second Lieutenant after receiving the Associate s degree. The General Bruce K. Holloway Service Academy Preparatory Program, instituted in 1910, is a designated preparatory program for the five U.S. Service Academies: U.S. Military Academy, West Point, U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Air Force Academy, U.S. Coast Guard Academy, and U.S. Merchant Marine Academy. MMI also offers the first two years of Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps in coordination with the University of Alabama. MMI has 88 full-time employees. More than 95 percent of the faculty and administrative staff hold advanced degrees. The faculty and staff of MMI are committed to intellectual and leadership development that will enable all students to be successful in any endeavor they undertake. The student-to-faculty ratio is 17 to 1. The Institute has a diverse enrollment of 439 cadets who represent a variety of racial, ethnic, religious, and socioeconomic backgrounds. Eightytwo percent are male and 57 percent are from out-of-state. In the 2014-15 academic year, firsttime degree-seeking students have an average SAT score of 1100 and average ACT score of 22. Across the college s programs, 47 percent of the cadets are enrolled in the Leadership Education Program, 26 percent participate in the Early Commissioning Program, and 25 percent are in the Service Academy Program. The College has several student organizations. The MMI Tigers are a member of the National Junior College Athletic Association and the Alabama Community College Conference. The College fields men s basketball, baseball, tennis, and NCWA wrestling, and women s softball and tennis teams. Located in west-central Alabama, the community is 75 miles from Birmingham and Montgomery and 65 miles from Tuscaloosa. Gulf coast beaches are three hours away. Known for its many antique shops, Marion and surrounding Perry County have numerous historic homes and sites, with more than 100 structures that were built before 1850.
