MICHIGAN STATE UNIVERSITY February 2018 Spring and Summer Semester Baccalaureate Degree Candidates: As a candidate for the baccalaureate degree, you are invited to participate in the Spring (Undergraduate) Convocation and your College-level Commencement Ceremony. Academic apparel is required to participate. Individual recognition is at the College-level Commencement Ceremony; your name is read and photos are taken. Please be respectful as names are read. If you participate in the Convocation and/or College-level Commencement Ceremony, you are expected to remain for the entire ceremony. Please allow one hour for the Convocation and at least two hours for the College-level Commencement Ceremony. To avoid delays, graduates and guests should not bring large bags to ceremonies; bags may be searched. Convocation provides our university community the opportunity to celebrate important occasions in our history and in the lives of our students. The Spring Convocation for all Graduating Seniors is Friday, May 4, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center. The President presides over this ceremony. The ceremony features a guest speaker to deliver the keynote commencement address and a graduating senior to deliver the Class of 2018 student address. The ceremony also includes the recognition of the Board of Trustees Award recipients, national and international scholarship/fellowship recipients, Honors College graduates, a thank you to Senior Class Council, and the recognition of all MSU graduates. Seating for graduates is reserved on the arena floor and in the bleachers. Graduates are not seated by college. Graduates must be in academic apparel to participate. Family and other guests are seated in general seating areas on a first-come, first-served basis. The ceremony is ONE HOUR. NO ADMISSION TICKETS are required. The COLLEGE-LEVEL COMMENCEMENT CEREMONIES are about TWO HOURS. NO ADMISSION TICKETS are required. These ceremonies are Friday, May 4 Sunday, May 6, 2018. Family and other guests may sit in the general seating areas on a first-come, first-served basis. A schedule of the College-level Commencement Ceremonies is included below. College-level contact information and ceremony information is included below. Please note there are specific security rules that vary by facility. BAGS AND PURSES ARE PROHIBITED from the Breslin Center. Bags and purses are permitted at the Wharton Center and the MSU Auditorium. There will be metal detectors at all entrances to the Breslin Center. Please plan accordingly for lines into the facility. Included in this document is information about academic apparel, assembly time and location, name card and photo card distribution, information for graduates with disabilities, Breslin Commencement Shuttle Service (Friday and Saturday), Auditorium Shuttle Service (Saturday), parking, and other important details. We ask your cooperation in observing graduation etiquette. Any items visible and worn with your academic regalia should be appropriate to the occasion and not detract from the recognition of your fellow graduating seniors. GRAD FEST is Wednesday, March 21-Friday, March 23 from 9:00 a.m.-7:00 p.m. There are discounts on cap/gown packages, announcements, and other commencement/alumni related items during this event. In support of the University s commitment to sustainability, the baccalaureate degree cap and gown is manufactured using recycled materials. After participating in your commencement ceremony and taking photos at your favorite locations please recycle your gown. Return them to the Spartan Spirit Shop. GUESTS WITH DISABILITIES JACK BRESLIN STUDENT EVENTS CENTER 534 Birch Road The Breslin Center is a barrier-free facility. Wheelchair accessible areas are at the Concourse level (the level at which you enter). Persons unable to climb stairs and wheelchair users may be seated in these areas. We ask that one individual in your party be seated with the person requiring wheelchair accessible seating. In order to accommodate all who require seating in the wheelchair accessible areas, we ask that all other members in your party be seated in the general seating areas. Please arrive early so that accommodations may be met. Ushers will direct you to these areas. There are a very limited number of wheelchairs available. They are available on a first-come, first-served basis at Guest Services, Hall of History (southeast) entrance, Concourse level. You must leave a valid driver s license (or other valid picture id) to use a wheelchair. Wheelchairs are for transportation only from the parking lot into the facility and to the seating areas. Please do not use wheelchairs for seating. Once you have transported your guest to seating, please return the wheelchair to Guest Services for others to use. Following the ceremony, you may use the wheelchair again. You must leave your driver s license again and return the wheelchair to Guest Services after use. Assistive Listening Devices (Phonic Ear headsets and receivers) are available at Guest Services, Hall of History (southeast) entrance, Concourse level. You must leave a valid driver s license or valid picture id to use the headsets. The Loop System is available in permanent seating areas. Open captioning is available for the deaf or hard of hearing. Please provide your name, mailing address, the number of guests in your party, and contact information. Reserved seating tickets will be mailed. Please be aware that we may need to limit the number of tickets in order to accommodate all guest requests. Barrier-free Parking is in the Breslin Center lot 63 East. Please enter from Shaw Lane. Parking in this area requires a valid State-issued disability plate/placard. The hanging disability placard permits prompter admittance. Parking in this lot is on a first-come, first-served basis. Please see Breslin Center diagram. If you do not have a State-issued disability parking placard or plate, you may drop off guests with mobility challenges on the north side of the Breslin Center (Kalamazoo Street). We ask that you do this as quickly as possible. Please see Breslin Center diagram. Early arrival is strongly suggested for those who have special accommodation needs and who are seeking barrier-free parking. The DOORS OPEN 1 hour 15 minutes early. MSU (UNIVERSITY) AUDITORIUM 542 Auditorium Road A ramped entrance is located at the southwest corner of the building. Seating without steps on the main floor is limited. In order to accommodate the high volume of requests, we ask that the person with mobility challenges and one other guest be seated in this area, and that the remainder of your party is seated in the general seating areas. Please consider the Auditorium Commencement Shuttle Bus Service on Saturday, as buses are accessible. Patrons are dropped off in the loop in front of the Auditorium. Please see Campus Map. SPRING CONVOCATION FOR GRADUATING SENIORS Friday, May 4, 1:00 p.m. at the Jack Breslin Student Events Center The ceremony is ONE HOUR. NO ADMISSION TICKETS are required. Ceremony for all graduating seniors. Graduates take the Service Drive (south side of Breslin Center, outside) down to the Arena level. Proceed to the Arena floor and to the graduate seating areas seating on the floor and in the bleachers. Graduating seniors are not seated by college at the Spring Convocation. You must be in academic apparel to be seated in the reserved seating on the Arena floor and in the bleachers. Students may exit the Breslin Center through the Service Tunnel/Drive at the south side of the building. Family and other guests are seated in general seating areas on a first-come, first-served basis. Children and other guests are NOT permitted in degree candidate seating areas. Guests Enter the building through any of the four main entrances. There will be metal detectors at all entrances. No bags or purses are permitted. Represent the Class of 2018! Be the Convocation Student Speaker The Senior Class Council will select a graduating senior to represent the Class of 2018 at the Convocation. Speeches are to be no more than five minutes and should be attention-grabbing, personally meaningful and meaningful to your fellow graduating seniors. Graduate Recognition: One of the most important hallmarks of Michigan State University Commencement Ceremonies is that graduates are recognized individually. In so that this University promise of individual student recognition is fulfilled, we ask everyone; students and guests, to be respectful as each graduate s name is read. Professional photographers will provide at least one photo: as you receive the token diploma from your dean or the posed photo before you return to your seat. Ceremonies begin promptly at the times listed below. Students should arrive in time for assembly as instructed below. General seating is available to your family and other guests on a first-come, first-served basis. Children and other guests are NOT permitted in degree candidate assembly or seating areas.
