OUR COMMUNITY Dane County has some of the best biking paths and access in the world. These trails help connect our communities and are an important component to our quality of life that attracts many people to live here. The newly completed Lower Yahara River Trail boardwalk spans Lake Waubesa, providing an off road trail connection between Madison and McFarland that didn t previously exist. This makes it the perfect site for our Parks & Trails Unite Festival which will unite, bridge and lift up our community while also celebrating the connections that our parks and trails provide. Everyone is invited to participate in county-wide celebration to enjoy free music, education, games, and listen to guest speakers on topics of unity and life skills and learn about a variety of services available through our nonprofits, schools and churches. This event will provide opportunities for those in our community to learn from each other and give back to our community. The event will be held in Lake Farm County Park and McDaniel Park in McFarland with activities and events spanning the boardwalk bridge. PHOTOS OF THE LOWER YAHARA RIVER TRAIL BUSINESS AND NONPROFIT PARTNERSHIP Businesses are helping to underwrite this event through sponsorships. Each business will also team up with area nonprofits and work together to host a station to educate and/or entertain attendees of this event (similar to an outside expo ). These partner nonprofits will also have the opportunity to take the stage at the festival to educate the public about their work and any community resources that they may offer. These groups will be introduced by a their partner business. Businesses may also sponsor a station without a nonprofit partner as a way to provide direct support for the festival and Dane County Parks volunteer program. SCHOOL AND YOUTH ORGANIZATIONS United Madison collaborates closely with the Madison Metropolitan School District as well as school and youth organizations. Students, faculty and families will be invited to this event to learn about nature, our local parks and various volunteer needs (parks stewardship, etc.). They will also have the chance to interact with area nonprofits to learn about their needs and find out what community services they offer. Students and families will also benefit from speakers who will talk about unity, life skills and other important information. -2-

OUR DANE COUNTY PARKS Dane County Parks are vital to our community and continue to grow and improve every year. Currently, the parks include over 15,000 acres of land including 25 recreation parks, 29 natural resource areas, 15 wildlife areas, 3 cultural/ historical sites, 2 forests, 5 campgrounds and the Lussier Family Heritage Center. Our Parks: o Protect water quality and provide recreational access to water. o Supports area businesses by attracting visitors. Over 2.5 million visitors annually Over 100 miles of trails o Provide venues for community events. o Enhance physical and mental health. This Parks & Trails Unite Festival will support these amazing resources and also help build capacity of Dane County volunteers and the sixteen friends groups that support individual county parks. The work that these individuals do for the betterment of Dane County Parks and our communities is essential. They organize community events and educational programs, plant prairies, remove invasive species, develop and maintain equestrian, skiing and bike trails, collect seeds from native plants, assist with prairie burns, raise funds for their parks, and much more. Last year the parks had over 3,500 volunteers that put in an unbelievable 66,880 hours. That equates to well over a million dollars in labor. These groups share the mission to: o Create awareness and encourage the enjoyment of public parks in Dane County. o Promote the preservation, expansion, and enhancement of such parks, trails and recreational facilities. o Support efforts to provide environmental education and interpretative programs to residents. o Support the programs and undertakings of parks in Dane County through volunteer recruitment, fundraising, and program and event sponsorship. o Publicize the value of land stewardship and land conservation to the end that future generations of County citizens will enjoy parks in Dane County.
