Are you passionate about the planet, interested in animal welfare, keen to fight injustice or inspired by the arts? Do you want to be able to measure exactly how much difference you make in the world? Would you value great career progression, scope to work overseas, flexibility to explore different disciplines, a hugely supportive network? Then a career in fundraising could be right for you. If you think fundraising is just about standing in the street and asking, think again. It is co-ordinating national online campaigns, negotiating with leading thinkers and strategists, organising marathons and galas, managing big budgets and enticing sponsors, rubbing shoulders with the rich and famous, understanding psychology, creating fun, inspiring and leading volunteers, being innovative, making the rules, and inspiring millions of people to give. It can take you to the rainforests of Borneo or the halls of Westminster and hundreds of inspiring places in between. There is only one place in the UK where you can take an undergraduate degree in fundraising, it s the University of Chichester. 3

The Course Be inspired by lecturers who bring their own first-hand experience of working with charities. Our course leaders are drawn from the profession. We also invite a regular programme of leading industry guest speakers, so you are always learning from the cutting edge of fundraising, vital in a profession that doesn t stand still. You ll also have opportunities to attend industry conferences exploring live issues, learning and networking with fundraisers. We teach in small groups of up to 25 students. Each module is normally supported by a weekly workshop of 2.5 to 3 hours; as a full-time student you will take 4 modules a semester. In addition there are regular oneto-one and group tutorials, alongside your own self-guided study. Our emphasis is on the development of problem-solving, analysis, self-management, and interpersonal skills. We want to give you the confidence to dream, to try and to fail, because without this life can be limited to what you know and what feels safe. It s this spirit of adventure that drives the charitable sector forward. The Charity Development degree is an integral part of our School of Enterprise, Management and Leadership (SEMAL), which makes our course flexible and allows you to tailor the content to suit your interests. You ll soon discover the skills you learn are highly transferable. Images BCI 4

Some of the modules you might take, will include: Introduction to Fundraising and the Third Sector There are over 164,000 registered charities in the UK, some with a multi-million turnover, others managing on a few pounds a week. Community Interest Companies represent an emerging trend for companies to make social benefit central to the work they do. From the arts to zoos, you ll be amazed at what happens in the third sector. For those in desperate need the third-sector is often their champion, offering care and assistance when there is nowhere else to turn. Your role will be vital in the success of the third sector so understanding how it works is essential. Fundraising has a recorded history stretching back to before the middle-ages. Some approaches remain fundamentally the same, the appeal letter, while others reflect the radical changes in the way we live today, online campaigns. The reasons why, and the way we give, are a fascinating record of how societies have changed, religions have evolved and the politics of the day have affected the private behaviour of individuals for generations. Understanding the different motivations for giving across different social, economic and cultural backgrounds will help you decide the best way to ask for support today. Understanding the many ways people give will help you find your niche in this multi-faceted career. Event Planning design and creation What makes a great event, one that will inspire people to support an organisation long after the twitter posts and SMS messages have faded into history? How can you plan an event that will help raise the profile and funding your organisation needs? This module looks at all the basics you need to know, from marketing to catering, safety to scene-setting and choosing a venue. Get your wellies on, don those high-heels, it s time to get very serious about parties. Grant-giving Trusts The top 100 family foundations in the UK give over 900 million each year, while the top 100 in the US give over three time this amount. The majority of grant giving bodies were established by wealthy individuals, but some are the result of a group of visionaries, such as Comic Relief, Children in Need and the many Lottery bodies. Grants from trusts and foundations usually provide the core income for charities while new loan funds help the emerging body of social enterprises that meet the needs of people and planet. This module will help to find and access funding and loans from these donors for your cause. 6

Major Donor Fundraising Major donors are individuals that make a large personal donation. In the UK many of the largest gifts (over 1 million) go to higher education institutions and foundations, but just over 20 per cent reach UK charities. You ll learn how to capture the hearts and minds of some of the world s wealthiest people, inspiring them to support the causes you care for. This module will help you gain the strategic know-how to achieve your goal, exploring people skills, high-level events and networking. Community and Events Fundraising Ever considered running three marathons in a row, or abseiling across a football pitch? Relax, your job will be to inspire others to do the daring do. Whether your style is to lead by example or keep your feet firmly on the ground, it s vital you know what motivates people to go to the lengths they do to support the causes they love. Learn how to engage and retain volunteers. Great project management isn t just about building bridges or digging tunnels, these skills will help you achieve more in your professional and personal life. This module looks at the classic PRINCE II methodology and a range of tools. Find the right methods and tools for you, learn how to use them and turn your idea into reality. 68

What makes us different... we guarantee you a place in halls 79

Experience in the workplace We believe that completing academic assignments, selfguided studies and taught sessions will bring you closer to your goal of being a professional fundraiser, but being part of a professional team that is actually making a difference will inspire you to exceed your expectations. We really encourage and support you in finding an internship opportunity that offers new perspectives. We are constantly building our list of charity partners so that you can find opportunities that match your interests. You can dedicate a day a week during the semester of years one and two to your internship or another learning through doing activity. We will encourage you to work with at least three different organisations over the course of your degree. By the first semester of year-three your aim is to find an organisation willing to help you prepare a fundraising strategy, taking up 50 per cent of your study time. In the second semester you will be able to identify an element of that strategy to implement for real, working directly with your host organisation and with our support. However, you may find that you have identified a project that inspires you and is independent of a specific charity. If you do, we will support you in developing a robust strategy which you can deliver, demonstrating your ability to think creatively, plan effectively and deliver results. 10

Going to university isn t just about the job at the end of your course. We hope that this degree will open up a world of opportunity and new friendships. With a wealth of overseas adventures available to effective fundraisers, you could spend some of your time under different skies, discovering new cultures and facing exciting challenges, or working in the UK with inspiring people you would have never met in fascinating situations you d never envisaged. The Charity Development BA (Hons) is accredited by the industry s leading professional body. As part of your studies you will work towards the Institute of Fundraising s Certificate in Fundraising, which as a member of the Institute will entitle you to include MIinstF (cert) after your name, the letters many employers are looking for. Student profile Sophie Rider Charity office manager 2012/13 Fundraising Module This is one of the best courses I have studied during my career in the voluntary sector and I wish I had done it at the start. The course provides knowledge which is essential for anyone working for a charity or voluntary group. Not only have I gained skills in fundraising, it has also helped me to underpin the reasons behind the projects we do and help to guide our organisation as a whole strategically and operationally. The University also has great links with the local voluntary sector, as well as there being a wealth of resources to back-up your study The University has an excellent student zone and being able to study in lovely surroundings over a Costa Coffee is great! 11

About us BA Hons Charity Development sits within our School of Enterprise, Management and Leadership (SEMAL), which offers a wide range of business and management related programmes. Our learning and teaching approach is distinctive when compared to that adopted by many universities. We take pride in the supportive learning environment that we provide, and to us students are not just a face in the crowd. One way in which this is reflected is through avoiding mass lectures and focusing on relatively small group learning. We believe that this approach creates a more effective learning environment. Our School of Enterprise Management and Leadership builds upon the strong reputation that we have earned for delivering high-quality courses in a supportive and friendly environment. SEMAL's programmes are based at the Bognor Regis Campus, which offers state of the art provision in a comfortable and attractive location.
