"Today, we take pride in having Emirati engineers who are specialised in satellite building and its applications; they are the pride of the UAE, and as His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed Al Maktoum said, the team of engineers at MBRSC is the core of the space sector and the bedrock of a scientific, technical and knowledge-based future in the UAE. Amer Al Sayegh Project Manager KhalifaSat The story of an Emirati engineer Engineer Amer Al Sayegh was one of the first to join the team at MBRSC after he graduated as an Electronics Engineer from the UK. Amer traveled with the centre s team to Korea where he worked on the UAE s space projects for nine years, and joined the knowledge transfer programs as well as taking part in the design and manufacturing of the satellites. The team contributed to building the first and second satellites, DubaiSat-1 and DubaiSat-2, and today Amer leads the KhalifaSat manufacturing project, which is the first project in the space industry sector to be fully built in the UAE.
I worked on the assembly of KhalifaSat, which was a good chance for me to work on a real project. Ahmad Al Nuaimi Meet two of the Entaliq Scholarship students We speak to the first two students that took part in the Entaliq Scholarship program, and who are now looking forward to becoming part of the MBRSC team to help establish a pioneering presence for the UAE in global space science and technology. Marwan Al Sharid and Ahmad Al Nuaimi are both currently pursuing their Bachelor s Degrees in Mechanical Engineering at Dubai Men s College, part of the Higher Colleges of Technology. Promising Opportunities The scholarship provides students with the exclusive opportunity to take part in some of the centre s most exciting projects, in the case of Marwan and Ahmad, both have become involved in the historic KhalifaSat venture. I worked on the assembly of KhalifaSat, which was a good chance for me to work on a real project. I also worked on new computer programs that are installed in the base of each satellite structure, states Ahmad as he talks about the hands-on experience he has benefitted from during his time at the centre. One of the most exciting aspects of the Entaliq Scholarship is that it provides its participants with the opportunity to be a part of something spectacular and inspiring. It also gives students the chance to work alongside the most motivated scientific teams in the UAE. MBRSC is very much a team, with each member pulling together in the same direction. Everybody supports each other as they undertake huge projects such as the KhalifaSat, and the Hope Probe Mars missions. Highly Efficient Teamwork I ve noticed that the centre is based on teamwork, and this is the reason for its success. I also made a lot of friends in the mechanical engineering department who will surely support me when I join. Working at the centre gives you a lot of positive energy, as you are meeting each day with positive and ambitious people. All departments in MBRSC work as one team, each department shares information and supports others. Hope Probe carries the hopes of Emirati Youth Marwan Al Sharid explained that: The space technology sector will be the primary sector for decades to come within the UAE. The Entaliq Scholarship offers unique opportunities including working on iconic projects such as the Hope Probe. As Ahmad articulates: I am proud to be at MBRSC and I really hope to be involved in the Hope Probe project, the first Mars Mission to be launched in the Arab world. Working at the centre gives you a lot of positive energy, as you are meeting each day with positive and ambitious people. Marwan Al Sharid
Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre The Mohammed bin Rashid Space Centre (MBRSC) is a strategic initiative that aims to inspire scientific innovation and technological advancement and advance sustainable development in Dubai and the UAE. MBRSC has made some notable achievements in its quest for scientific excellence. Some of these milestones include the rehabilitation and training of tens of Emirati engineers in space science inside and outside the country, and the launch of DubaiSat-1 in 2009 and DubaiSat-2 which began its orbit in 2013. The institute has also embarked on another two significant programs that aim to further strengthen the standing of the Arab region in the competitive field of space science. Firstly, the KhalifaSat will be UAE s first locally built satellite. It is being built in the UAE in the centre s laboratories located in Al Khawaneej area. Only Emirati engineers and technicians, who participated successfully in designing and building the first two satellites, will be involved in the planning and designing of the project. KhalifaSat is targeted for launch into orbit by 2018. Secondly, the globally revered project recently announced by His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, may God protect him, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, the Hope Probe to be sent to Mars in 2021, in time for the UAE s Golden Jubilee, celebrating the 50th anniversary of the founding of the nation. The scientific objectives of the probe are to study and explore the nature of climate change on Mars; scientific data will be shared freely with institutions and research centres worldwide. These projects look set to cement the standing of the UAE and MBRSC in the global space industry, and will secure a foundation and legacy for the future generations of Emirati engineers and scientists to be able to build upon. The success of MBRSC depends on the strength and growth of its team of employees, all who thrive in a working environment where creativity and innovation are highly encouraged and promoted in order to achieve the centre s strategic objectives.
