The George M. Elsey Collection Biographical Sketch George M. Elsey was director ofthe White House Map Room during the Second World War. He had access to the President, the Chiefs of Staff, and various foreign dignitaries such as British Prime Minister Winston Churchill during those years. Later Elsey served as President ofthe American Red Cross. Scope and Content Note The Elsey Collection is arranged topically. Most ofthe collection materials pertain to the D-Day landings in Normandy, France in 1944 including dispatch telegrams from Allied commanders in Normandy on D-Day. Box 1 contains reports, diagrams, and charts regarding Allied and German preparations for the invasion ofwestern Europe. There moe a number ofreports from the Eleventh Amphibious Force detailing that unit's participation in the D-Day landings. Box 2 contains joint press statements issued by President Franklin D. Roosevelt and Prime Minister Winston S. Churchill in 1942, Minutes from Chiefs ofstaffmeetings in 1942, various memos, four booklets from the Campaign Study series, copies ofthe D-Day dispatch telegrams, and several sets of newspaper clippings. Box 3 contains sets of8x10 inch and 4x5 inch photographs taken on the D-Day beachheads as well as the original D-Day dispatch telegrams. Box 4 contains various printed materials including a number ofbooks, government issued manuals, language guides, and guides to foreign countries for visiting American troops.
