For Prizes, students who are graduating or completing their degree programs can submit a paper, thesis or dissertation. Applicant can be enrolled in any departmental major or graduate program at UCLA. Applicant can be of any race or ethnicity and academic discipline at UCLA for most fellowships, scholarships, internships and grants. Additional eligibility or criteria requirements for specific fellowships, prizes and grants may be listed. GUIDELINES Submit an online application with your proposal or paper as a Microsoft Word document to scp@aasc.ucla.edu. You can submit only one proposal or paper for one specific fellowship or prize. You must list the proposal or paper title for the fellowship or prize that it is being applied to. Students can submit old papers they have written for academic coursework or newly written papers or proposals. Applications should be typed only. Double- space your papers, essays or proposals and use a 12 pt. standard font (e.g. Times New Roman). Copies can be made on front and back side of paper. See complete application package list below. Only complete application will be considered for review. Application packages with incomplete information and/or copies will be disqualified. Page 1

GUIDELINES (continued) The application package must be submitted with the documents in the order listed below: 1) General Application form 2) Curriculum Vitae or Resume 3) Summary Statement about yourself for publication purposes. If you receive an award, you will be requested to submit this by email at a later date, so please save in your computer files. 4) An unofficial (or student copy) transcript may be obtained online through MyUCLA. The unofficial transcript can be viewed on- screen or printed as a PDF. There is no charge for an unofficial transcript. - http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/faq/transcriptfaq.htm 5) Completed Faculty Recommendation form if requested, use form on page 3 of application. Unless request is stated, recommendations are not required or optional for other Fellowships and Grants. One UCLA Faculty reference is required on application form. A second reference and/or letter of recommendation are optional. 6) UCLA financial aid award and/or a personal statement of your financial situation and need. For personal statement, write what your financial situation is, such as: If you work, how many hours a week; what is the monthly/annual pay? Is anyone able to financially support you, why or why not? What are the conditions for your financial need? If you have loan debt, what type, how much? 7) Document requested for specific fellowship, grant, or prize; i.e. proposal, essay, paper. At the top of the first page of this document, put your name and the name of the specific fellowship, scholarship, grant, prize or internship that this document is being submitted for. If you are submitting the same document for several fellowships, prizes or scholarships, please mention the titles on the cover page of the document. Do not put any other information not being requested. Proposal: Describe your research on the Asian Pacific American community in detail, including: the relation of this work to other community- oriented research in the field of Asian Pacific American Studies; research project plans including faculty and/or community based organizations involved; Professor Harry H. L. Kitano Fellowship Award: 1 award at $1,000 Criteria: Academic record, application and proposal must reflect student s interest in social issue- oriented research regarding the Asian Pacific American community. Fellowship recipients will be funded for research or creative project on a significant topic dealing with the Japanese American experience. Criteria: Academic record Proposal: Describe your research or creative project on the Japanese American experience in detail, including: precise statement of the research or creative project and its key objectives; the relation of this work to other research or creative activity in the field of Japanese American Studies; research or creative project plans including faculty and/or community based organizations involved; include any conference presentation and/or publication plans; Limit your proposal to five double- spaced pages. Faculty Recommendation form on application must be Dr. Paul & Hisako Terasaki Fellowship Award: 1 award at $3,000 Eligibility: Continuing Japanese national graduate or professional student enrolled at UCLA. Fellowship recipients will be funded for research or creative project on a significant topic dealing with the Japanese American experience. Criteria: Academic record Proposal: Describe your research or creative project on the Japanese American experience in detail, including: precise statement of the research or creative project and its key objectives; the relation of this work to other research or creative activity in the field of Japanese American Studies; research or creative project work plans; Page 4

Graduate Student Fellowships (continued) Pearl Wang Fellowship Award: 1 award at $5,000 Eligibility: Must be a continuing graduate or professional student enrolled at UCLA and is from the People s Republic of China. Fellowship recipients will be funded for research or creative project on a significant topic dealing with the Asian Pacific American experience. Criteria: Academic record Proposal: Describe your research or creative project on the Asian Pacific American experience in detail, including: precise statement of the research or creative project and its key objectives; the relation of this work to other research or creative activity in the field of Asian Pacific American Studies; research or creative project work plans; 21st Century Graduate Internship Award: 1 award at $1,500 Eligibility: Must be a continuing graduate or professional school student who is in the Asian American Studies MA program, Graduate Concentration and/or who is enrolled in AAS classes. Student will be funded for an internship with the UCLA Asian American Studies Center for two quarters during Summer/Fall quarter 2016, Fall 2016/Winter 2017 or Winter/Spring quarter 2017. Student will intern for 8 hours/ week for 10 weeks during the two quarters, working with faculty and/or staff on a special project or program. Criteria: Academic record, application and personal essay must reflect student s interest in the field of Asian American and Pacific Island Studies. Essay: Describe your interest and/or experience with the Asian American Studies Center and/or with the field of Asian American and Pacific Island Studies. Essay must be a maximum of 5 pages only. Asian Business Association Fellowship Award: 1 award at $987 Criteria: Academic record, application and paper must reflect student's interest in research, regarding Asian Pacific Americans in business. Paper: Submit your research paper about Asian Pacific Americans in business. Page 5

Academic Prizes for Graduate Students Hiram Wheeler Edwards Prize for the Study of WWII Internment Camps & Japanese Americans Criteria: Academic record and most outstanding graduate paper on a topic related to the lessons learned from the World War II internment of Japanese Americans. Papers can be submitted that have been written for any academic course or be new papers. Papers should be 20 to 30 pages. Professor Harry H.L. Kitano Graduate Criteria: Academic record and most outstanding graduate paper relating to Asian Pacific Americans and social issues they face. Papers can be submitted that have been written for any academic course or be new papers. Papers should be 20 to 30 pages. Wei- Lim Lee Memorial Prize Criteria: Academic record and most outstanding graduate essay or research paper on Chinese immigrants whether in the United States or other countries outside of China, can be focused on a historical or contemporary topic. Papers can be written for any academic course or be new papers. Papers should be 20 to 30 pages. Ben & Alice Hirano Academic Prize Criteria: Academic record and most outstanding graduate paper on Asian Pacific American history and/or experience. Papers can be submitted that have been written for any academic course or be new papers. Papers should be 20 to 30 pages. Rose Eng Chin & Helen Wong Eng Prize Eligibility: Application must reflect student s interest in Asian Pacific American studies and/or Women's studies. Criteria: Academic record and most outstanding graduate paper, thesis or dissertation on Asian Pacific American women. Students can submit papers written for any academic course, can be a new paper, thesis or dissertation. Papers can be 20 to 30 pages. Tsugio & Miyoko Nakanishi Prize in Asian American Literature & Culture Criteria: Academic record, outstanding graduate paper on Asian Pacific American literature, arts and culture. Papers can be written for any academic course or be new papers. Papers should be 20 to 30 pages. Page 6
