January 17, 2016 Parish Bulletin Issue 2 Volume XLVIII ST. ALOYSIUS CATHOLIC CHURCH 2025 Stuart Avenue Baton Rouge, Louisiana 70808-3979 (225) 343-6657 Fax (225) 344-6847 Website: www.aloysius.org Life is full of surprises, some pleasant, some not. The scriptures are filled with stories of God's surprises cropping up when they are least expected: younger children obtaining the inheritance; the lowliest being seated highest up; an itinerant preacher, killed like a criminal, exalted to eternal, heavenly glory. Anybody who has planned a wedding or similar event knows that they are filled with opportunities for surprises. For the bridegroom in today's Gospel story, who has no direct contact with Jesus, the pleasant surprise came because somebody else paid attention and had faith in Jesus. We may think that the point of today's familiar story of the wedding at Cana is that when we have faith in Jesus, our lives will be pleasantly changed. A Christian, however, needs to have a broader perspective and realize that to have faith in Christ means that somebody's life--not necessarily our own--will be surprised for the better. January 17, 2016 2nd Sunday in Ordinary Time

January 16 17, 2016 Our Challenge Dear friends, The prophet Isaiah used the analogy of marriage to describe Israel s relation to God. God has espoused God s self to Israel. God delights in Israel like a groom delights in his bride. But this analogy cuts both ways. Our relation to God is like the marriage bond and the marriage bond is like our relation to God. Both are anchored in mutual love. The apostle Paul had to deal with the problem of competition in the church at Corinth. Members were quarreling over which spiritual offices were the highest. Paul insisted that all gifts were equally important. God equips each of us with a gift for the common good. None is unimportant. All are necessary. Our everyday lives depend on the work of countless other people, most of whom we take for granted. Think of factory workers, migrant laborers, farmers, trash collectors, to name only a few. We should not overlook the fact that Jesus performed his first miracle in the Gospel of John at a wedding feast. By this act, Jesus sanctified the ordinary things of life. The ordinary times and places of daily life are opportunities for encountering God as surely as the special time and places of worship. Jesus miracle at Cana helped produce a festive occasion. On many occasions we celebrate things that have already happened, such as graduation from college. At other times we celebrate things that are just beginning, such as getting married. These latter celebrations are largely acts of faith. We have no guarantees about things that are only beginning. We still may have faith, however, in the One who transcends our celebrations. We are reminded of the importance of the ordinary and the insignificant by the familiar adage: For want of a nail the shoe was lost; for want of a shoe the horse was lost; for want of the horse the rider was lost; for want of the rider the battle was lost. We must never underestimate the importance of ordinary times and places, and those who work there. They are the ground of our daily lives. Have a great week! Love and prayers, Father Randy WITNESS THE MYSTERY OF GOD S MERCY During this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has asked each of us to concentrate on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. Each week we will offer one or two ideas for us to consider incorporating in our journey to becoming more merciful. Resist sarcasm; it is the antithesis of mercy: Set, O Lord, a guard over my mouth; keep watch, O lord, at the door of my lips! Psalm 141:3 Pare down possessions: share your things with the needy. THE RITE OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION OF ADULTS (RCIA) PROCESS NEEDS YOU The first line of Pope Francis call for the Extraordinary Jubilee Year of Mercy states that Jesus is the face of God s Mercy. So the challenges for us Christians is how to respond to that mercy; how do we also be merciful. The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA), Paragraph 4, states that the RCIA is a gradual process that takes place within the community of the faithful and the faithful provide an example that will help the catechumens to obey the Holy Spirit more generously. A deeper reading and understanding of that short statement in the Rite instructs us to involve the whole community as mentors for our Catechumens and Candidates in their apprenticeship into the Catholic Christian faith. We have 15 people who will begin the Catechumenate stage of their process on Sunday, January 24. Each person needs a sponsor from this community. If you feel called to become a Sponsor, meeting each Sunday after the 9:00 am mass until about 11:30 am until Easter Vigil, please call or email right away. reast@staloysiusparish.com or call 343-6657 and leave a message.
