Chinese--European Networking Symposium Research Networks, Advanced Networks and Broadband Solutions Full programme included 9-10 December 2004 Shanghai, China Attend to: Understand the latest trends in einfrastructures Determine the key success factors for Chinese-European Networking Projects Identify potential partners and research networking projects in China and establish links with them Learn about trends in Chinese advanced networking solutions

EC-BRIDGE conference: Research Networks, Advanced Networks and Broadband Solutions 9-10 December 2004, Shanghai, China Event overview The EC-BRIDGE Shanghai Conference is an initiative of the European Commission, Directorate General Information Society, in the framework of the IST programme and is supported by the Chinese Government. Who should attend Decision-makers, managers, IT professionals, public officials, policy makers and governmental administration representatives, researchers operating in the field of Research Networks and Broadband. Representatives of European projects in the field of advanced networks are particularly encouraged to apply. The EC-BRIDGE Shanghai Conference aims at strengthening the co-operation between the European Union and China in the field of research networks, advanced networks and broadband solutions, challenging the partnership opportunities between the EU and China. The EC-BRIDGE Shanghai Conference will empower the European and Chinese participants with a comprehensive knowledge about opportunities for collaboration under the 6 th Framework Programme and the IST programme. The conference thus presents a unique opportunity for European and Chinese companies and institutions to exchange innovative and successful experiences, improve scientific and technological research and initiate steps towards enhanced co-operation in advanced networks and broadband solutions, making full use of the newly deployed einfrastructures. Conference programme The EC-Bridge Shanghai conference programme provides a stimulating mix of plenary presentations and parallel sessions along distinct streams and themes of relevance to research networks and broadband solutions in Europe and China (including advanced applications based eg. on grid technology). The conference programme supports the aim of this event which is about the creation of synergies with the different research communities in China (such as radio astronomers, bioengineers, etc) that would like to co-operate with their European counterparts by making full use of the benefits of the already deployed einfrastructure (and the link that will very soon be deployed to Asia via the TEIN2 project). A recently conducted Trends Mapping Study will be presented on Research Networks and Broadband Solutions. The study will be made available to the public in order to facilitate cooperation and provide up-to-date information for decision-makers. Date and Location 9-10 December 2004. Everbright Center, Shanghai, China Special features Project opportunities EC-BRIDGE Shanghai Conference will encourage joint proposal submission by European and Chinese actors under the 6th Framework Programme and the IST Programme in particular. The European Commission will explain the funding possibilities for joint research activities of European and Chinese organisations. Officials from the Ministry of Science and Technology (MoST) and Ministry of Education ((MoE) in China will give keynote speeches. Exhibition area A first-rate exhibition area provides a platform for European and Chinese organisations to showcase their research results and technological offerings. This exhibition is open to industrial companies, service providers, academic and research institutes, policy makers, public and governmental administration representatives. Face-to-face meetings VIP rooms will be available for those wishing to discuss concrete proposals. The rooms should be reserved in advance or on site. A welcome reception for European participants will take place with the Chinese organisers on Wednesday 8 December (18:00 19:00) at the Everbright Centre. A social event A surprise event will take you to one of Shanghai s brightest spots on Thursday evening. Companion programme An interesting companion programme will be available to entertain your companions during the conference. For more information about EC-BRIDGE Shanghai conference, please contact: Prof. Paul VAN BINST University of Brussels (ULB) Tel: +32 2 629 32 11 e-mail: vanbinst@helios.iihe.ac.be

9-10 December 2004, Shanghai, China EC-BRIDGE conference: Research Networks, Advanced Networks and Broadband Solutions What is a einfrastructure? A coherent ensemble forming a pervasive communication and collaboration Infrastructure. The research and education communities around the world started to embrace the benefits of advanced communication capabilities supporting their collaborative efforts. High-speed networks, like GÉANT, as well as advanced collaboration infrastructures exploiting Grid technologies, like EGEE, offer a whole new way of research to be carried out. Together with new protocols like IPv6, they provide the elements to realise the global Information Society. einfrastructures are the collection of all tools, facilities and resources that are needed nowadays for advanced collaboration. This includes the integration of various technologies and components like communication channels, computing power, data storage, Grid-based middleware and resource sharing into an einfrastructure that encompasses all of that and as such creates a new, more powerful and all inclusive element providing one-stop-shop services. This essential infrastructure is already fundamental for scientists around the globe and is gradually moving into changing the every day life of citizens. The provision of a seamless and pervasive einfrastructure that lays the framework for many new and imaginative services for the benefit of society is paramount for the creation of a global Information Society and consequently constitutes an important item on the agenda of the European Union and other regions in the world. When is the next EC Call for Proposals for Research Infrastructures? and what is it about? By the end of the year 2004, a call on consolidating activities for einfrastructures will be launched by the EC focussing on three main aspects: Reinforce the research scientific communities engagement in the use of the einfrastructure; Reinforce and stimulate einfrastructure policies for science and engineering, and policy based management actions and tools ; Support international aspects of einfrastructures. Proposals may include specifically targeted initiatives for potential user communities, surveys, feasibility and demand analyses, actions to address policy based management, concertation activities, and path finding actions that identify and explore new areas for einfrastructures.

EC-BRIDGE conference: 9-10 December 2004 Organisers The conference is organised by the European Commission, Directorate General Information Society under the IST (Information Society Technologies) programme. The event is officially supported by the Chinese Government. About Information Society Technologies Programme (IST) A major theme of research and technological development within the European Union's Sixth RTD Framework Programme (2002-2006). IST is a single, integrated research programme that builds on the convergence of information processing, communications and media technologies. IST is managed by the Information Society DG of the European Commission. http://www.cordis.lu/ist The strategic and logistical issues of the EC-BRIDGE Shanghai conference organisation are contracted to the following bodies: China Research and Education Network (CERNET) Université Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) CERNET is China's first and largest national academic Internet backbone and currently the second largest Internet backbone in China. CERNET has about fifteen-million end users and about 1,300 universities and institutions members. Its backbone bandwidth is 2.5Gbps, and it has 38 Giga PoPs and reaches more than 200 cities all over the country. CERNET is creating leading edge Internet services and support advanced applications. CERNET is also the major participant for the large project named China Next Generation Internet, which is a five-year plan and supported by Chinese government since 2003. It will establish the largest part of test bed for next generation Internet designs, which is named CERNET2, and keeping China's computer scientists at the forefront of the field. Chinese government believes that CERNET is playing the most important key role in future Internet research. www.edu.cn ULB ( Université Libre de Bruxelles ) is one of the largest Belgian universities with about 18000 students, over 5000 staff, seven faculties including medecine and engineering, and a number of associated schools.
