The Greek Life office and the National Pan-Hellenic Council are happy to see the organization back on campus and are excited to see the chapter grow and succeed. Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc. is the first international fraternal organization founded on the campus of a historically black college. They were founded on November 17, 1911 at Howard University by three undergraduates and their faculty advisor. The Olympian -4- Greek LIFE Spotlight Homecoming King and Queen: Christian Teague and Ruby Bui The Greek Life Office is proud to have representatives of the SHSU Greek Life community win Homecoming King and Queen this past Fall 2017 semester. Nine of the last ten homecoming courts have had members of the Greek community winning. We love seeing our student leaders receive positive recognition and represent themselves, their families, and organizations in monumental ways. We were able to get statements from the winners about why they ran for king and queen and what winning meant to them. "I got the idea to run for homecoming king about a year ago, but at the time, I treated it as a joke and did not really put that much effort or thought into it. The more I mentioned it, the more my close friends and fraternity brothers encouraged me to run for the court. It felt amazing to have so much support and so many people who were willing to help me. What many people do not know is that there are so many rules and regulations to abide by. I was definitely stressed, but I had to remember that I was not doing this just for me. I did this for my fraternity and for everyone else who cared about me and supported me. I had a lot on my shoulders those couple of weeks, but it was manageable due to my fraternity brothers and the overwhelming wave of love I received from them." Christian Teague, member of Phi Beta Sigma "I ve always had a passion for leadership and being able to use that attentive position to uplift students in having self confidence, to be kind, and to try new things. It goes beyond being just a student, but a Bearkat! Therefore, I am thrilled to be able to represent my chapter, a group of girls filled with compassion who are beautiful inside and out. My Tri Sigma sisters continue to push me to always do my very best, and they support me endlessly in anything I put my mind to. Not only am I glad to represent my chapter, but I am humbly honored to represent Greek Life as a whole. Educating and inspiring current and future Bearkats that Greek life is more than what society labels us. We too are business owners, dreamers, and leaders. But most importantly, I want to inspire every single Bearkat to not hold back, go out there and try something new! " Ruby Bui, member of Sigma Sigma Sigma

The Olympian -5- Greeks Do Good As the fall semester began the greater Houston area was hit with Hurricane Harvey. Many people were affected by the storm, including students and alumni from Sam Houston. The students from the Greek Life community came together during this tumultuous time to serve the victims of Harvey. Many chapters organized fundraising events to donate to the Harvey Relief fund. Others gathered material items that were needed such water, clothes, canned foods, medicine, etc. There were even members who went to help at the shelters throughout the days and weeks that followed the storm. The students continue to illustrate Sam Houston's motto: "The measure of a Life is its service."
