SIB Tips... Issue 54, February 2018 A newsletter of ideas for UBC Sisters Committees to use to be more effective Empowering Sisters - Marches and Conferences This month s newsletter highlights how UBC Sisters are showing their passion for causes and learning. During the January 20, 2018 National Women s March, Sisters joined thousands of women to make their presence felt in Canada and the United States. Take a look at SIB Committees in the Prairie Arctic and the Pacific Northwest. Sisters are also pursuing learning opportunities at women s conferences. The International Sisters Conference is high on the agenda, with members sharing information and seeking sponsorship. Some other conferences are on the radar as well. Check out SIB Committees in the Pacific Northwest and the Southwest. Bottom line, Sisters are using their passion for causes and learning to achieve positive outcomes nationally and locally. In Solidarity, International Sisters in the Brotherhood Committee

Regional Updates: Industrial Council Sisters in the Industrial Council continued their community involvement with school children and needy families. Great Industrial Council! Canadian District Sisters in the Atlantic Canada Regional Council SIB Committee are doing outreach by working with carpentry students at community colleges, making presentations to high school students and participating in job fairs. Sisters also carried their SIB banner as they joined in the Women s March Canada on January 20, 2018. Like their ACRC counterparts, Sisters in the Prairie Arctic Regional Council SIB Committee joined the Winnipeg Woman s March and the Regina Women s March on January 20, 2018. Also, two Saskatchewan Sisters attended an Equity Conference in Regina. Awesome Canadian District! Eastern District Sisters in the Keystone Mountain Lakes Regional Council SIB Committee participated in several worthwhile causes in the last quarter of 2017. In September 2017, first-year apprentice Aubre Latta and SIB chair Patty Selby attended the Girls Rock Science event at the Carnegie Science Center. This was a two-day event that promoted girls involvement in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM). On November 19, 2017, the Council Training Center provided the setting for the National Association for Women in Construction (NAWIC) annual Block Kids Contest, an event that exposes kids to the construction field. Along with Sisters, the apprentices set-up for the event and volunteered as judges. On November 21, 2017, Tenika Chavis and Patty Selby participated as panel members in a presentation titled, The Changing Face of Industry: Women in the Skilled Trades. The presentation was part of a career-fair at the Community College of Allegheny County. It was open to area college and high school students. Terrific Keysone Mountain Lakes! 2

Midwestern & Southern Districts Sisters in the Central South Regional Council SIB Committee partnered with FEMA to help with rebuilding in different areas. Nice Central South! Sisters in the Michigan Regional Council SIB Committee have been focusing on politics. They are currently fighting the abolishment of prevailing wage; and two Sisters attended an event for Gretchen Whitmer, a candidate for Michigan governor. Excellent Michigan! In the North Central States Regional Council, the Minnesota Metro SIB Committee has been concentrating on retention. They discussed pregnancy and families at their January monthly meeting. And they published their 2018 calendar, which contains key events and planned topics. Click here to see the calendar. Wonderful Minnesota Metro! The St. Louis and Kansas City Regional Council SIB Committee continues to aggressively reach out to Sisters by sending letters, holding monthly conference calls, and posting to Facebook. On the political end, Sisters are attending committee hearings on prevailing wage and right-to-work at the state Capitol. They are also working with communities to support candidates door-knocking campaigns. Outstanding St. Louis and Kansas City! 3

Western District In the Pacific Northwest Regional Council, several SIB Committees moved forward with initiatives that benefited Sisters and the community. The Portland SIB Committee provided Sisters with information about women s conferences International Sisters Conference, Empower Women s conference, Women Build Nations Conference. Sisters were also encouraged to take advantage of training offerings at the ITC such as foreman training, journeymen training, 212 journeymen training class, and 300 hitter training. The Seattle SIB Committee worked with the Carpenters In Action (CIA) committee to raise funds for school supplies of members children. Cash donations came from Locals 30, 41, 70, and the Regional Council; with a final tally of $1750.00 being raised. The money was used to purchase 55 backpacks and various supplies. Click here to read more and see the backpacks. Sisters in the North Puget Sound SIB Committee started their year by participating in the National Women s March on January 20, 2018. They also continued efforts to engage Sisters mentoring new Sisters and using social media to stay in touch. Additionally, the committee focused on education; sharing information about women s events such as the Empower Women s Conference and Women Build Nations Conference, as well as encouraging women to seek sponsorship for the International Sisters Conference. 4

Western District (continued) On the political front, Sister Angela Ewen will attend the next Apprentice Day on the Hill. Angela is a veteran who completed two tours in Afghanistan. She is also a graduate of TERO Vocational Training Center. Stupendous Pacific Northwest! In the Southwest Regional Council, the Las Vegas SIB Committee is discussing participation in the International Sisters Conference. They are also exploring ways to keep Sisters engaged. Some of these include: Converting to a conference call for future SIB meetings Sending the SIB text earlier in the week Changing SIB procedures to streamline the meetings Sisters also participated in the National Women s March on January 20, 2018. Fantastic Las Vegas! 5
