Williams III Americana Collection, University Libraries Division of Special Collections, The University of Alabama Biographical/Historical note A Methodist-affiliated university, LaGrange College was founded in January 1830 in Franklin County, Alabama. The name changed to LaGrange Military Academy in 1855, and in 1858, the college was moved to Florence, Alabama. Enrollment flourished as the state funded scholarships for two students from each county to attend the institution. In 1861, forty-seven students were enrolled as cadets. At the outbreak of the Civil War, many of the college's students and instructors left the college to enlist in the - Page 3-
Thirty-Fifth Alabama Infantry Regiment. On 28 April 1863, the college was destroyed in a fire started by members of the Tenth Missouri Cavalry. John W. Kumpe, born in February 1861, was the son of LaGrange Military Academy Trustee Dr. George E. Kumpe and Mildred A. (or Rebecca Kingsley) Kumpe. He married Martha Rebecca King in 1894 and the couple had three children: Percy K., James Edward, and Martha Rebecca. He died on 18 July 1944 in Colbert County, Alabama. Scope and Contents note This ledger contains entries documenting student expenses at LaGrange Military Academy in Franklin County, Alabama. These entries were written from 1858-1860, with the bulk of the entries dated 1860. In addition, the ledger also includes later entries written by John W. Kumpe that document his personal expenses. Kumpe was the son of Dr. George E. Kumpe, one of the trustees for LaGrange Military Academy. These entries are dated 1858-1892, with the bulk of the entries dated from 1889-1890.
