Nautical Science (Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch) Nautical Science has three main elements: navigation and ship handling, safe operation of ships and shipboard administration. The program aims at training cadets to become Officers in Charge of a Navigational Watch on merchant ships. The training is conducted in accordance to the provisions set out at the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). Upon completion of 4 years study, which include 1 year of training onboard a ship, the graduates will obtain the STCW Officer in Charge of a Navigational Watch Certificate of Competency at an operational level by the University of Nicosia and also a Bachelor s Degree in Nautical Science by Intercollege Larnaca. The Certificate of Competency will give the cadets the opportunity to be promoted to the positions of Chief Officer and Master. Graduates will also be able to work in executive positions for shipping companies. The Deck Department Officers are responsible for the navigation, maneuvering and safe handling of the ship; communications between the ship and shore; the handling and delivery of cargo; and the operation of all lifesaving devices. The Master is in ultimate command of the vessel, acting on behalf of the ship s owner.

Marine Engineering (Officer in Charge of an Engineering Watch) Marine Engineering deals with the operation, maintenance and repair of the engines, boilers, generators and all other mechanical and electrical systems of the ship. This program aims at training individuals to become Officers in Charge of an Engineering Watch on commercial ships. The training is conducted in accordance to the provisions set out at the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW). Upon completion of 4 years study, which include 1 year of training onboard a ship, the graduates will obtain the STCW Officer in Charge of a Engineering Watch Certificate of Competency at an operational level by the University of Nicosia and also a Bachelor s Degree in Marine Engineering by Intercollege Larnaca. The Certificate of Competency will give the cadets the opportunity to be promoted to the positions of Second Engineer and Chief Engineer. Graduates will also be able to work in executive positions for shipping companies. Engine Officers, under the orders of the Chief Engineer, are responsible for the proper running, maintenance and repair of the mechanical and electrical installations of the ship. The perfect candidates for a position like this are skillful and knowledgeable individuals who seek professional development opportunities and keep up-to-date with new technological advancements. The Chief Engineer is responsible for the management of the Engine Room, as well as the operation and maintenance of all mechanical and electrical installations of the ship.

Marine Electro-technology (Electro-technical Officer) Marine Electro-technology involves the operation, maintenance and repair of various electrical and electronic systems of the ship. This program aims at training individuals to become Electro-technical Officers (ETO) on merchant ships. The training is conducted in accordance to the provisions set out at the International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watch-keeping for Seafarers (STCW). Upon completion of 4 years study, which include 1 year of training onboard a ship, the graduates will obtain the STCW Certificate of Competency for Electro-technical Officer at an operational level by the University of Nicosia and also a Bachelor s Degree in Marine Electro-technology by Intercollege Larnaca. Most modern ships are controlled and/or monitored by electronic systems, automations and computers. Therefore, experienced and highly skilled technicians are needed for the operation and proper maintenance of such ships. The ETO is responsible for the maintenance and repair of all electrical and electronic equipment, installations and machinery of a ship. This also includes radio-communications and electronic navigation aids. ETOs are very important to the marine industry and their position on-board the ship is of paramount significance.
