Academic calendar 2008-2009 1 st semester Welcome day: first week of September Beginning of the academic year: 8 September 2008 -------------------------------------------------------------------- 1st semester: from 8 September 2008 to 20 December 2008 Christmas break: 22 December 2008 to 5 January 2009 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Examination period -1st semester: 5 January to 7 February 2009 6

Academic calendar 2008-2009 2 nd semester Assessment system Welcome day: second week of February 2nd semester: from 16 February 2009 to 13 June 2009 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Easter break: 4 to 13 April 2009 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Examination period -: 15 June to 18 July 2009 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Resit examination period: July 2009 -------------------------------------------------------------------- Summer Holidays: 1 to 31 August 2009 Assessment comprises written, oral and practical tests/examinations, papers, projects and portfolios. Examinations always take place at the end of each semester. I - The final assessment of a course unit is expressed by a grade on a scale of whole numbers from 0 to 20, with 10 as the minimum pass mark. II - The final classification of a diploma/degree programme is expressed as a number from 10 to 20 on the scale of whole numbers from 0 to 20, as well as its equivalent in the European scale of comparability of classifications. III - The final classification is the arithmetic weighted average of the classifications obtained in the course units that make part of the course structures of the diploma/degree programmes. IV The final classification is usually associated with a qualitative definition in four classes: Pass (10-13) Good (14 and 15), Very Good (16 and 17) and Excellent (18-20). Language of instruction The Academic Services at each Faculty (called "Bedel" in some of them) deal with examination scheduling and registration as well as marks. The majority of course units are conducted in Portuguese. Although there is a number of course units offered in English, which can be found on our website; and in some cases, exchange students make arrangements with lecturers in order to be allowed to do examinations or submit assignments in English (or in another language, if both parts know it). Modern Language studies are usually medium-taught (in Portuguese, English, French, German, Dutch, Spanish or Italian). Language requirements The Faculty of Sciences and Technology usually offers complete master courses in English in the fields of Ecology, Cell Biology and Software Engineering; and a doctoral programme in the field of Information Technology. As you can see from above it is very important that students have a good knowledge of the Portuguese language. Therefore, they are advised to attend the Intensive Language Preparation Course at the beginning of the months of September and February. The course is free of charge for exchange students. In the academic year of 2008/2009, the University of Coimbra does not organise Portuguese ERASMUS Intensive Language Courses (EILC). 7

Although, there will be a number of Portuguese Language and Culture Courses running at the Faculty of Letters at the beginning of each semester and during the year.
