Firefighter/EMT (6 Full Time Positions) Upper Merion Township, located in King of Prussia, PA is looking for full-time highly motivated Firefighter/EMT s who will report directly to the Chief of Fire and Emergency Medical Services. This team of Firefighter/EMT s will respond to fires, rescues and other disaster situations. Additional duties involve delivery of emergency medical treatment, property inspections and maintenance of related equipment, buildings and grounds. Community outreach within the Township will be expected along with and other duties and work as assigned. The starting annual salary is $55,000.00, plus Excellent Benefits. Duties of the Firefighter/EMT include (but not limited to): Responds to emergency calls for service as part of a team. Operates firefighting and rescue equipment. Conducts salvage operations at fire scenes as directed and assists with investigations of fire scenes. Liaises with the police and EMS personnel to effectively mitigate emergency situations. Provides emergency medical services in the absence of an ambulance crew. Promotes fire safety by organizing training sessions, talks, and seminars. Reviews and implements safety policies and procedures at residential and commercial properties. Provides Public Safety staff with demonstrations on how to effectively operate firefighting equipment. Conducts drills to acquaint company personnel with emergency response procedures. Participates in educational workshops, seminars, and programs to update job skill and knowledge. Minimum Education and Training Qualifications: Applicants must possess a high school diploma, or a G.E.D. Certificate; plus an Associate s Degree, or 60 semester credit hours in an accredited institution of higher education at the time of appointment. Applicants with at least two years of full active military duty with an Honorable Discharge may qualify for a waiver of thirty (30) semester credit hours; Certified as both a Firefighter I and Firefighter II (NFPA 1001: IFSAC, Pro Board or PA OSFC); Must hold FEMA NIMS Certificates for ICS 100, ICS 200, ICS 700 & ICS 800; Must hold a Hazardous Materials Operations Certificate (NFPA 472); Must hold an Emergency Vehicle Operators Course Certificate; Must hold a Pump Operations Certificate; Must hold a Pennsylvania DOH or NFPA Vehicle Rescue Technician Certificate or equivalent; Must hold a current emergency medical services certification from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania as an Emergency Medical Technician at a minimum. Position Objective: The Firefighter/EMT works as part of a firefighting team by responding to disaster situations, structure fires, structural collapse, and entrapments. Also delivers emergency medical treatment, conducts property inspections, maintains all related equipment, buildings and grounds. Operates firefighting equipment to extinguish fire, and rescues people. Ensures availability of water supply at emergency scene by testing fire hydrants to confirm they are operational. Follows manufacturer s instructions to complete preventive maintenance requirements to ensure equipment is in working order. Promotes fire safety by organizing training sessions, talks, and seminars. Reviews and implement safety policies and procedures at residential and commercial properties. Provides Public Safety staff with demonstrations on how to effectively operate firefighting equipment. Conducts practice drills to acquaint company personnel with emergency response procedures.

Cleans and maintains personal equipment and keeps them ready for use. Assesses situations quickly to decide the best course of action. Produces written reports of emergency incidents. Emergency Vehicle Operators Course Pump Operations. Pennsylvania DOH or NFPA Vehicle Rescue Technician. Physical Strength: Firefighters maintain a level of fitness necessary for lifting and handling firefighting equipment. Judgment: They are able to make sound decisions on best ways to tackle an emergency situation. Safety Management Skills: They are able to recommend appropriate safety procedures to prevent fire outbreak in an organization. Pre-employment tests: This position requires successful completion of a series of tests and evaluations before being hired. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to use and maintain firefighting equipment and to learn the theory necessary for effective firefighting and equipment operation, after a period of training. Ability to apply basic techniques of fighting fires. Ability to perform strenuous physical activities such as lifting heavy firefighting equipment, climbing standard and aerial ladders, lifting, and carrying people and equipment for rescue and salvage. Ability to work under conditions of heavy physical exertion in extreme heat and dust, in high and confined areas and smoke-filled spaces, and in all kinds of weather, and to maintain physical activity for prolonged periods of time. Ability to understand and apply principles of emergency medical and first aid treatment. Ability to administer first aid, CPR and other emergency medical care. Ability to prioritize emergency medical treatment needs. Ability to think clearly and to apply knowledge under stressful conditions and to handle more than one task at a time. Ability to remain calm in emergency situations in all types of environments. Ability to establish rapport with patients. Ability to understand and carry out instructions. Ability to record information professionally, in written form. Ability to function independently and without direct supervision. Ability to work closely with people, including functioning as a team member, and to exercise tact or diplomacy and display compassion, understanding, and patience. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units. Physical Characteristics: Sufficient clarity of speech and hearing and other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to communicate effectively, including during emergency situations which may involve a high degree of noise; Sufficient vision and other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the employee to effectively operate at a fire or related emergency scene;

Sufficient overall physical health, to successfully complete the pre-hire physical ability test and post hire for handling rapidly moving situations where quick maneuvering in less than ideal situations involving obstacles, challenging climbing requirements and structural collapse. Incumbents are prohibited from displaying any tattoo on any part of their body that would be normally visible to the public while wearing the official duty uniform. No arm sleeves, wraps, cover-ups, bandages, etc., will be allowed to be worn in order to cover a tattoo. It is permissible to wear long sleeve shirts and pants all year long.
