My best wishes to the student members who are stepping in to the new academic year 2014-2015. This semester being the season of campus recruitment for the final year students, I would like to put forth some of my thoughts as motivational tips to the students, who will be facing the interviews. o Focus on conceptual understanding, application and the presentation of your ideas o Be confident about what you know and be sure about what you present o Interact with your peers for sharing of the knowledge and better understanding o Be focused on goals what you want to be so that you are able to realize and achieve them. I wish the academia for an eventful year ahead with lots of success and laurels. Message from the Editor Dr. S.ARUMUGAM arumugamdote@yahoo.co.in +919965099900. I am happy to release the second issue of the MAS-LINK. The results of the Student project funding for the year 2013-14 is reported. A sum of rupees 47000 is funded for six projects. I request the project coordinators to send a report to MAS link for publication after the completion of the project. IEEE student councilors must encourage the students to apply for student project funding. The report reported by various branches of IEEE received up to 30.05.2014 were included in this issue. I request the members to send the report in word format for editing the report. Most of the student members will be busy with their examinations and summer internship training. The students members undergoing internship training can report their experiences for publication in this news letter. The Colleges are now preparing for reopening of the Institution after summer vacation. Students are free enjoy the summer vacation in a useful way. I wish the members to enjoy their vacation and start new session with full zeal and enthusiasm. I request the members to send some useful information for publication in the news link. SPF REPORT (2013-14) IEEE Madras Section, happy to announce the results of the Student Project Funding for the year 2013-14. A panel of judges were constituted and evaluated the student s project demo on 19 th April 2014 at IEEE Madras Section. Six projects were selected and recommended for the funding as given in the table. These six projects, students will be issued with the project completion certificate. MUTHAYAMMAL ENGINEERING COLLEGE, RASIPURAM- 637 408. MEX IN 14 (In House Project Contest) (14.03.2014) 79 students (II nd yr 50 Students, III rd yr 29 students) had presented their project. Dr.S.Nirmala, Vice Principal & Head of the Department of Electronics and Communication Engineering witnessed the projects. Prof. V.Mathiazhagan, Prof. A.Andamuthu, Prof. N.K.Shankar and Prof. V.Priya evaluated the projects. The competition was coordinated by Prof. N.K.Shankar and Prof. V.Priya. The Prize winners for the competition were S.Tamilselvan, B. Senthilkumaran, S. Shyed Musthaba and K.Silambarasan of 2 nd yr has won 1 st prize for a project Mobile Detector With Mini UPS P. Gomathi and A.John mercy of 3 rd yr has won 3 rd prize for a project Grid Frequency Based Generator Load Management System Using Microcontroller Certification Course on DSP Theory using MATLAB/TMS320C6000 Processor (17 th to 21 st January 2014) Dr.S.Nirmala, Vice Principle & Head/ECE inaugurated the program. Mr.Bhooshan.N.Iyer, Program Manager DSP Group, and Mr.Gajendira Kanjikar, Software Engineer-DSP division, from CRANES Software International Limited Bangalore were the keynote speakers and trainers. The technical sessions included Introduction to MATLAB, manipulating matrices, MATLAB Programming, Introduction to DSP, Transforms and Processors, introduction to Software development tools, TMS320C6000 architecture and pipelining, TMS320C6000 Assembly Programming, Digital filter Designs and hands on sessions on MATLAB and processors. Hands on training on MATLAB and TMS320C6000 Processor kit were given. 57 student members participated in the courses. Prof.C.Selvi of Electronics & Communication Engineering coordinated the event. EASWARI ENGINEERING COLLEGE 5 th National Conference on VLSI, Embedded, Communication and Networks (VECaN-14) (17.04.2014) 90 papers were received from various colleges and 56 papers were selected for publication and presentation. Dr.N.Govindaraj, Senior Principal Scientist, CEERI, Chennai inaugurated the conference. Dr.S.Sudha, HoD/ ECE & Convener of VECaN 14 delivered th welcome address. Mr.Sridharan, AP/ECE introduced the Chief Guest. Chief Guest, in his address explained about the technological developments in CEERI and insisted on exclusive research centres in Colleges. He wanted the PG scholars to actively involve in research. ference. Mrs.P.MeenakshiVidya, AP Sl Gr/ECE, proposed the vote of thanks. The papers were published in the VECaN-2014 PROCEEDINGS with ISBN number 978-81-927672-1-5. 56 papers will be published in IJACT (International Journal on Advances in Computer Technology). IEEE CIS Madras Chapter and VALLIAMMAI ENGINEERING COLLEGE 4 th National Conference on Emerging Technologies in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (NCEEE 14) The primary objective of the conference is in bringing together academicians and practitioners in Electrical and other associated fields on a common platform to share their knowledge and expertise so as to contribute towards research and development in the field. Out of 50 papers were received 40 papers were selected for presentation. The Welcome Address was delivered by Prof. K. Elango, HoD, Department of Electrical and Electronics Engineering. Dr. M. Murugan, Vice Principal Valliammai Engineering collegefelicitated the gathering. The conference was inaugurated by Dr. N. Kumarappan Chair, IEEE Computational Intelligence Society, Madras Section. In his address he highlighted that such conferences would ignite a spark in the minds of budding engineers and they would be triggered to explore more in the areas of their interest and also highlighted the new trends of power engineering. Mr. G. Madhusudhanan, convener of NCEEE 14 proposed vote of thanks. Dr. K. Vijaya Kumar, Professor and Head, Department of EEE, SRM University and Mr. Rathnam, Assistant Professor, Department of EEE, SRM University served as judges. Dr. K. Vijaya Kumar, was the chief guest for the valedictory function. Best papers presented were awarded with special certificates. Dr. G. Udhaya Kumar, Co-Convener, NCEEE 14 presented the vote of thanks. Reported by: Dr N Kumarappan, Chair, IEE CIS Madras Chapter SRM UNIVERSITY Guest Lecture by Mr. Quentin Robin,Siepel (07.04.2014) Mr. Quentin Robin, Siepel(Manufacturers of Microwave Absorbers, Shielded Rooms and RF & EMC laboratories;siepel.com) delivered a lecture on RF Absorbers, Anechoic Chamber and ReverberationChambers as well as RF properties and EMC standards and measurements. He also insisted that there is a huge demand for Electromagnetics and RF engineers. Followed by Mr. Rajappa, Indian Representative of SiepelIndia, discussed about the Turnkey Solution Provider and elaborated about the construction of Anechoic chamber, in various sectors like Automotive, Aerospace etc. which was quiet interesting. Rama Rao COMPETENCY DEVELOPMENT PROGRAMME IEEE YOUNG PROFESSIONALS (FORMERLY GOLD) (24.05.2014) Dr. S. Selvam, Professor Emeritus, IIT Delhi was the chief guest. The program was organized for the young teaching faculty and teaching aspirants from various places across Tamilnadu. Prof.S. Elangovan, Vice Chairman, IEEE young professionals, Madras Section, delivered welcome address. Dr.N.R. Alamelu, Chair, IEEE Madras Section, delivered the Keynote address. In her address, she mentioned about the essential behavior of the engineering teachers and also insisted about the importance of such competency development program for the engineering college teaching fraternity. Barnabas, and Drupal Coordinator, IEEE Young Professional Programme, Madras section were present in the program. Faculty Development Programme on Soft Computing and Simulation for Power Engineering The IEEE Computational Intelligence Society Madras Chapter in association with IEEE Madras section, IEEE Student Branch, S.A.Engineering College, Chennai organized a Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on 8 th and 9 th May 2014. The programme was attended by 31 faculty members of colleges and universities from all over Tamilnadu. The co-ordinators of the program were Dr.N.Kumarappan, Professor of Electrical Engineering, Annamalai University and IEEE MAS LINK Vol. 11 No. 2 May 2014 Page 8

Dr.N.Kumarappan, delivered the inaugural address. Dr.G.Umarani Srikanth, Professor and Head, Department of PG Studies, S.A.Engineering College, Chennai welcomed. The Resource Persons for the program were Dr.N.Kumarappan, Mr.M.Venkateshkumar, Assistant Professor, Dept. of Electrical and Electronics Engineering, Saveetha University, Dr.A.Manju, Professor and Head, Department of Embedded System Technologies, S.K.P Engineering College, and Mr.R.Arulraj, Research Scholar, Department of Electrical Engineering, Annamalai University. The topics covered were Fuzzy Logic based Load Frequency Control, ANN based Power Dispatch, GA based Unit Commitment, Performance Analysis of Buck and Boost Converter using PSCAD, Load Flow Analysis using ETAP. Hands-On training was given on all the above mentioned topics. He is co-editor of the popular books Harnessing Green IT: Principles and Practices, Wiley 2012 (Wiley-India has published its Indian edition); Web Engineering, Springer 2001; Handbook of Research on Web 2.0, 3.0, and X.0: Technologies, Business, and Social Applications, IGI-Global 2009; and the forthcoming Encyclopedia of Cloud Computing, Wiley 2014. He has authored or co-authored over 230 publications and guest-edited 20 journal special issues. He is an editor of IEEE CS flagship magazine Computer and edits its bimonthly column Cloud Cover. He serves on several review and advisory committees.
