ACTIVITY INFORMATION COURSE DESCRIPTION AND STATEMENT OF NEED Despite significant advances in research, hypertension remains a leading cause of death worldwide. The Cedars- Sinai Hypertension Center 2017 Clinical Highlights Symposium will provide participants with a comprehensive review of the latest diagnostic and therapeutic approaches to this complex and multifacted disease. Course content will explore blood pressure monitoring and resistant hypertension, general pharmacotherapy, primary aldosteronism, hypertension in chronic kidney disease, hypertensive heart disease, renovascular hypertension and other relevant topics such as lifestyle modifications. Special emphasis will be placed on the clinical recognition, evaluation and management of adrenal hypertension, including aldosterone producing adenoma and pheochromocytoma. The course format will consist of case-based lectures reviewing the latest evidence, recommendations and scientific principles, and will provide clinicians will effective strategies to incorporate into daily medical practice. The Cedars-Sinai Hypertension Center is the only hypertension program in California to be certified as a Comprehensive Hypertension Center by the American Society of Hypertension (ASH) - the largest organization of clinical hypertension specialists and hypertension investigators in the United States. The Cedars-Sinai Hypertension Center provides comprehensive multi-specialty consultative care for patients with difficult-to-treat hypertension, secondary hypertension, and related conditions. The Center also has innovative National Institutes of Health (NIH)-funded research programs ranging from basic science on the immunologic basis of hypertension to a randomized clinical trial of a community-based barber-pharmacist-physician team approach to improve hypertension management in African-American men. TARGET AUDIENCE This course is designed for internists, family medicine, hospitalists, general medicine, pediatricians, nephrologists, cardiologists, endocrinologists, OB/GYN, pharmacists, nurses, nurse practitioners, physician s assistants, and interested allied healthcare providers. EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES Review the differential diagnosis and evaluation of the incidental adrenal mass Describe the most accurate methods of blood pressure monitoring and the specific implications for resistant hypertension patients Describe the basic approaches to pharmacological management of hypertension Review current methods in the diagnosis of pheochromocytoma and paraganglioma, and approaches to treatment Describe the role of aldosterone in the pathophysiology and treatment of high blood pressure Apply culturally appropriate interventions and counseling on blood pressure and treatment adherence among minority patient populations ACCREDITATION STATEMENT is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
