Dean of SLIM A faculty member and former interim dean at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee will be Emporia State s next dean of the School of Library and Information Management. Dr. Wooseob Jeong will begin his new role as professor and dean of SLIM on July 5, according to Dr. David Cordle, Emporia State provost and vice president for academic affairs. Dr. Jeong served at the University of Wisconin Milwaukee since 2001, moving from assistant professor to associate professor in the School of Information Studies as well as serving as program director for the bachelor of science in information resources and the master of library and information science. Dr. Jeong also served as interim dean of UWM s School of Information Studies from 2012 to 2014. This position is a good fit with my experiences in administration, said Dr. Jeong, noting that Emporia State s SLIM program has strong enrollment and a solid curriculum with hybrid courses that combine online and face-to-face classes. Provost Cordle anticipates that Dr. Jeong will move the Emporia State program forward. The School of Library and Information Management is a key point of distinction for ESU. SLIM offers our largest master s program and our only doctoral program, with student cohorts in Colorado, Oregon, and Utah as well as here in Kansas, said Dr. Cordle. We looked for a sterling academic record and proven leadership ability in our next SLIM dean, and in Dr. Wooseob Jeong we found exactly that. Wooseob s experience and personal qualities make him the right person to help SLIM build on its success. Dean of Graduate and Distance Education Dr. Jerald Spotswood will become the next dean of Emporia State s Graduate School and Distance Education. Dr. Spotswood comes to Emporia State from Fort Hays State University, where he was the assistant dean of the graduate school and professor of English. He has been at Fort Hays since 2012. There are a lot of opportunities in graduate education right now; it s one of the leading segments of growth, said Dr. Spotswood about what he s looking forward to in the new position. I think there are a lot of things we as a faculty could do to build up enrollment and still keep a very strong curriculum. Jerald Spotswood s background and experience make him a great fit for this position, said Dr. David Cordle, Emporia State provost and vice president for academic affairs. He has provided leadership for graduate and distance programs at Fort Hays State University, an institution that s obviously similar to ESU in many ways. And as a former department chair, he knows how to work with faculty members and understands the central role they play in the university s success. Jerry comes to us highly recommended, and we look forward to welcoming him and his family to Emporia and ESU, Dr. Cordle added. Dr. Spotswood begins his new role June 5. He will move to Emporia with his wife, Joelle, and their son, Jason, who turns 4 in June. He said the entire family is looking forward to the move after visiting Emporia and Emporia State twice once before he even applied then again during his on-campus interviews. I liked this institution, Dr. Spotswood said. It has a very strong faculty and a very strong administrative team in place. During my oncampus interview, Joelle and Jason spent the day in the community looking around. 4 June/July 2016
ESU is the First Kansas School to Join Partnership for a Healthier America As the next step in a campus-wide wellness program, Emporia State University is joining the Partnership for a Healthier America, which works with the private sector and PHA honorary chair First Lady Michelle Obama to make healthier choices easier, in a three-year commitment to adopt guidelines around food and nutrition, and physical activity and programming. We are proud that Emporia State is the first institution in the state of Kansas to join this important partnership, said Mike Wise, ESU director of recreation services. We would like to be recognized as the Healthiest Campus in Kansas. ESU s participation was announced by PHA in Washington, D.C. With the addition of Hornet Nation, the PHA initiative will impact more than 1 million students, faculty and staff on campuses across 29 states. Working with a group of the nation s leading nutrition, physical activity and campus wellness experts, PHA has a set of guidelines to build healthier environments for college and university students. In trying to recognize the unique nature of each campus, colleges and universities choose which guidelines they want to complete upon joining the initiative, and have until the end of the three-year commitment to fully implement them. These guidelines were created to give credit for existing campus wellness efforts, as well as to challenge colleges and universities to do more.
