POW/MIA REPORT Ray Calore, Chairman AND BRAVE WOMEN, TOO In all, roughly 265,000 women volunteered to serve in Vietnam. Nearly eleven thousand of those women served within active combat zones. There were nurses, but also doctors, CIA officers, and air traffic controllers. There were an unknown number of civilian women who belonged to the Red Cross, the USO, and other humanitarian organizations. There were also female journalists reporting from Vietnam. Our women served and died along with men during the war; 67 died eight military, 59 civilian. To this day, Dr. Eleanor Ardel Vietti is the only American woman, civilian or military, still considered missing from the Vietnam War. She served as director of a leprosarium hospital at Ban Me Thuot, South Vietnam. On 30 May 1962, a dozen armed Viet Cong entered and ransacked the hospital, taking sheets, medicine, implements, anything of value. When they left, they also took Dr. Vietti, Rev. Archie Mitchell and Mr. Dan Gerber. Medical personnel were especially valuable to the enemy. U.S. and South Vietnamese military authorities spotted the three prisoners the next day but a rescue attempt was deemed inadvisable. Dr. Eleanor Ardel Vietti During the years following their capture, fierce battles were fought in the area. Still, Montagnard tribesmen coming in from the jungle brought encouraging stories about three white captives. One Montagnard said he had seen the three captives alive in a mobile Viet Cong prison camp. The Americans immediately went out and found the hospital complex where it was reported to be located, but it had already been evacuated. A woman told of seeing two white men and a white woman with a group of Viet Cong; the white woman had asked for a Bible. In 1967, Allied soldiers over-ran a Viet Cong jungle hospital and found prescriptions which they claimed only an American doctor could have written. This year marks the 55 year anniversary of being prisoners of war. (Source: National Alliance of POW/MIA Families.) At Operation Homecoming in 1973, Ardel Vietta was classified as Prisoner of War, Category 1. Please don t let that be the end of the story. (for more information: Search: Eleanor Ardel Vietti.) V.A. HOSPITAL REPORT,.,. I love it when a good plan comes together. On March 23, Chris Anderson, Mary Secrest, Jim Robinson and Dana Pflumm went to the Leavenworth VA Hospital for their monthly bingo visit. We played 3 games of bingo, Mary doing the calling. Chris made the cupcakes that were not only a work of art but delicious as well. They got high raves from the 44 veterans in attendance. Everyone there had a great time with a host of one-liners and lots of laughs. Our next visit will be on April 27. We meet at the Post at 5:30. Hope to see you there....chris Anderson and Dana Pflumm VFW s TRANSITION & EMPLOYMENT SERVICES When you leave military service behind, the transition to civilian life can often be turbulent.
