QPHS held its 82nd Annual Commencement Exercises on Sunday, May 31 at Queen of Peace Church. The 86 students from the Class of 2015 received their diplomas and over $10 Million in scholarships and grants. John Tonero Appointed Principal of QPHS The QPHS community welcomed our new Principal, Mr. John Tonero, to the High School in December 2014. Since the, Mr. Tonero has had a wonderful effect on QPHS. His support for our Catholic Faith, Academics and Athletics as the pillars of our School community and his emphasis on discipline and professionalism have transformed the tenor and environment of the School. At the same time, the Board has noted his obvious experience and competency which provide the School with excellent judgment, even in the most difficult circumstances. Prior to joining QPHS, Mr. Tonero served in administrative positions in Newark public schools for eight years. He holds a BA in Economics from Seton Hall University and an MA in Education, Administration and Supervision from New Jersey City University, as well as NJ Certifications as a Principal, Supervisor, and Teacher of Mathematics and Business Education. Mr. Tonero has also been very active in athletics, serving as a high school head coach of cross country, indoor and outdoor track for over 13 years. QPHS Appoints Christopher Hansen as Director of Development The QP family welcomed our new Director of Development, Christopher Hansen, on July 1st. Mr. Hansen has a long career in Catholic education, having previously worked at Marist High School in Bayonne as a teacher, Director of Alumni and Director of Advancement. During Mr. Hansen s career in the Alumni Relations Office, he grew the program by reconnecting long-absent alumni through various school-sponsored receptions throughout the country, engaged them in social media and personally reached out to reestablish a connection between the alumni and school. He also served as Assistant Baseball Coach and helped make the team the 2012 New Jersey Non-Public B State Champions. Summer/Fall 2015 3

Around Campus International Bazaar QPHS held its International Bazaar on March 18. The student s many nationalities, food and traditions were on display during the evening. HSA Tricky Tray The annual Home School Tricky Tray was held on March 6 in the QPHS gym. The evening featured over 100 prizes, great food and many fun photo opportunities. 4 Summer/Fall 2015

Honors Night QPHS held its annual Honors Night on March 4, 2015. The night showcases all of the accomplishments of our students for the year. Sophomore Honor Society Induction Summer/Fall 2015 5

Sports at QPHS Former Two-Time All Area Coach of the Year Leads Golden Griffins into New Era Queen of Peace High School announced today that Jim Kelly has been named head coach of the varsity football team (Parochial 1) for the 2015-2016 academic year. Coach Kelly will assume his duties immediately and will report to the Golden Griffins Athletic Director. Division III NCAA playoffs. Coach Kelly has a distinguished 24 year coaching career in New Jersey academic institutions. He joins the Golden Griffins from Montclair State University where he was the Assistant Coach for seven (7) years. At Montclair, he was an integral part of the coaching staff that included two league NJAC conference titles and two trips to the Coach Kelly also had highly successful head coaching stints at Clifton and Nutley High Schools. At Clifton High School, he led his team to the NJSIAA State Playoffs and was named All Area Coach of the Year by The Herald News. While at Clifton, he coached future Academic All American and Doak Walker candidate, Joe Haro. At Nutley High School, where he roamed the sidelines for seven (7) years, Coach Kelly was again named All Area Coach of the Year. He was recognized by the Nutley Board of Education for his success in generating student athletic scholarship grants, reaching the $1 million dollar plateau. Coach Kelly holds the distinction of being the only head coach to defeat perennial public school football power Montclair High School in consecutive seasons while at the helm of two different schools. As a head coach, he has placed over 75 student athletes in college football programs. 6 Summer/Fall 2015

Jiovanny Fontan Appointed Girls Head Basketball Coach Chris Boyce 00 Appointed Boys Basketball Coach Nick Edwards Appointed Varsity Baseball Head Coach Coach Fontan had a distinguished basketball career while playing for Fordham University and the University of Southern California. He was a true experienced court general and leader who possessed the ability to distribute the ball to his teammates and play tough defense. He was expected to be the team leader for the Trojans 2011-2012 season, but tore his ACL on a summer exhibition tour to Brazil and missed the entire season. Coach Boyce has a long history of coaching at Queen of Peace High School. He previously held the head coach position from 2007-2011. During Coach Boyce s first term as head coach, he led the team to two league championships in which the Golden Griffins were undefeated in league play both years, a first in Queen of Peace s history. He finished the year ranked in the Top 15 in New Jersey and coached the school s first North Jersey Player of the Year and Second Team All- State. Coach Edwards has a long history in North Arlington and Queen of Peace athletics. He attended St. Peter s Prep and was Honorable Mention All-County Baseball Player his sophomore year, Second Team All-County his junior year, and First Team All-County and Second Team All-State. He was the team captain his senior year when St. Peter s won the Hudson County Championship with an undefeated 18-0 record and finished fifth in the state. Summer/Fall 2015 7

QPHS 3T Program The Queen of Peace 3T Program was created to give alumni the opportunity to reconnect with one-another and their alma mater. Here are some ways that you can reconnect. Alumni Professional Networks Part of the Alumni Relations Program is the implementation of Alumni Professional Networks. To achieve our objective in encouraging our alumni to continue their intellectual growth, we will be establishing career-specific alumni groups. Networking events will be organized for alumni of similar careers as an opportunity for them to meet one another and make connections that may help them advance professionally. Providing alumni with a professional network will strengthen their relationship with Queen of Peace High School, as we may open professional opportunities for them they otherwise would not have had.
