Natioal traiig survey 2013: summary report for Wales Who aswered the survey i Wales? This year, 2,237 doctors i traiig completed the survey out of 2,287 who were eligible, givig a respose rate of 97.8%. * This compares with 97.4% i 2012. The proportio of respodets by traiig level group was (=2,237): foudatio (F1 ad F2) 28.3% core ad pre-st4 specialty traiig 46.8% ST4 ad above specialty traiig (ST4-ST8) 24.9%. 54.4% of respodets were female ad 45.6% were male (=2,237). 9.1% said they were i less tha full-time traiig (=2,237). 91.2% were female ad 8.8% were male. Doctors i traiig were asked if their day-to-day activities were limited because of a health problem or disability that has lasted, or is expected to last, at least 12 moths. 44 doctors i traiig (2.) said their day-to-day activities were limited a little or a lot (=2,194). Of those reportig a health problem or disability that limited their activities, 13 (29.5%) said that they eed adjustmets to be able to carry out their work. Overall satisfactio with traiig To measure overall satisfactio with traiig, we asked doctors i traiig about five aspects of their curret post: The overall satisfactio with traiig score i Wales was 81.5 out of a possible 100 (=2,234), compared with 81.0 i 2012 (=2,315). how they rate the quality of teachig how they rate the cliical supervisio they receive how they rate the experiece they gai how they would describe the post to a fried who was thikig of applyig for it how useful the post will be for their future career. 70.1% rate the quality of teachig i this post as excellet or good (=2,234). 84.4% rate the quality of cliical supervisio i this post as excellet or good (=2,234). 83.1% rate the quality of experiece i this post as excellet or good (=2,234). * Not all traiees aswered all questios, so we have give the total umber of doctors i traiig with valid aswers i parethesis for each key fidig. Cliical supervisio 88.4% said they had a traiig or learig agreemet with their educatioal supervisor, settig out respective resposibilities (=2,110). 95.6% reported usig a learig portfolio (=2,168). 84.4% said they were told who to talk to i cofidece if they had persoal or educatioal cocers (=2,082). We measured the quality of cliical supervisio by askig doctors i traiig about their cliical supervisor, whether they felt forced to cope with cliical problems beyod their competece or experiece, ad if they have bee expected to obtai coset for procedures where they felt they did ot uderstad the proposed itervetio ad its risks. Natioal traiig survey 2013: summary report for Wales is part of the overall satisfactio measure ad is reported i table 1. 86.7% said they always kew who was providig their cliical supervisio whe they were workig ad that they were accessible. 5.9% said they kew, but their cliical supervisor was ot easy to access, ad 0.1% said there was o oe they could cotact (=2,229). 94.4% said they were rarely or ever supervised by someoe who they felt was t competet to do so. 5.6% said they were supervised by someoe who they felt was ot competet to do so: 0.9% o a daily basis, 1.8% o a weekly basis, ad 3. o a mothly basis (=2,234). 85.3% said they rarely or ever felt forced to cope with cliical problems beyod their competece or experiece. Of the 14.7% who said they felt forced to cope with such problems, 0.6% said this happeed o a daily basis, 6. o a weekly basis, ad 8.1% o a mothly basis (=2,234). 92.6% said they have rarely or ever bee expected to obtai coset for procedures where they felt they did ot uderstad the proposed itervetios ad its risks. 0.6% said they were expected to do so daily (=2,234). Feedback to traiees o their performace We asked questios about feedback that doctors i traiig had bee give. Specifically, this icluded the quality of iformal feedback received from seior cliicias, formal meetigs with supervisors to talk about progress i the post, ad formal assessmet of performace i the workplace. 29.3% reported that they rarely or ever had iformal feedback from a seior cliicia o their performace (=2,234). 61.6% had a formal meetig with their supervisor to talk about their progress i the post ad foud it was useful. 6. had a meetig but foud it was t useful (=2,234). 61.3% had a formal assessmet of their performace i the workplace i this post ad foud it was useful. 6.3% had a formal assessmet but foud it was t useful (=2,234). Adequate experiece We asked doctors i traiig about the practical experiece ad competecies they were gettig from their post. 76.8% rated the practical experiece they were receivig i their post as excellet or good (=2,234). 83.2% said they were very or fairly cofidet that their post will help them acquire the competecies they eed at this stage of their traiig (=2,234). Hadover To measure the quality of hadover which is importat to esure cotiuity of care for patiets we asked about arragemets before ight duty ad after ight duty. 43.7% said that i this post, the hadover arragemets before ight duty were best described as a orgaised meetig of doctors; 28.5% said a orgaised meetig of doctors ad urses; ad 4.8% said a phoe or email commuicatio. 20.9% said the hadover arragemets were iformal ad 2.1% said there were o arragemets (=1,555). We asked doctors i traiig to rate the quality of iductio to the orgaisatio they work i. We also asked whether they received iformatio about their workplace ad whether their role, resposibilities ad educatioal objectives were discussed whe they took up their post. 64.1% said they would rate the quality of iductio to the orgaisatio i this post as excellet or good (=2,234). Local teachig 86.5% of traiees said they got all the iformatio they eeded about their workplace whe they started workig i this post (=2,105). 90. said someoe explaied their role ad resposibilities i the uit or departmet at the start of this post (=2,130). 92.8% said they sat dow with their educatioal supervisor ad discussed their educatioal objectives for this post (=2,200). Workload We asked doctors i traiig about their workload. 20. said their workig patter left them feelig short of sleep whe at work o a daily or weekly basis. 58.5% said it rarely or ever left them feelig short of sleep whe at work (=2,234).
