UNCBears.com GAME INFORMATION After winning their first game of the season on Sunday afternoon, the University of women s soccer team is back in action this weekend when they travel to Los Angeles to play in the Loyola Marymount Holiday Inn, LAX Tournament. The Bears will play the host Lions on Friday at 5 p.m. before coming back on Sunday to battle Pac-10 foe Washington State at Noon. THE BEAR FACTS A big load was lifted off the Bears shoulder s on Sunday when the team put together a complete game and outplayed a previously undefeated and good Delaware team to win for the first time this season. Freshman Kerry Pitt and senior Cassie Sadusky each scored first half goals and the Bears held on to win 2-1. The two goals doubled the scoring output the team had put togethter in its first three regular season games of the year, as a Marika Johnson goal against Eastern Washington was the only score the Bears had entering Sunday. The trip to Los Angeles continues a streak of five games in a row away from home, as the road trip concludes the following week when UNC travels to Nebraska. The Huskers are 3-1 on the season and are ready to re-enter the top 25, a spot they were ranked in during the preseason. They play New Mexico on Friday before challenging the Bears on Sunday. Alix Runstrom s two gaols leads Washington State. Series History: Both games will be the first meetings ever between the teams. NORTHERN COLORADO NOTES All-Tournament Selections: Senior Raegan McHugh and freshman Kerry Pitt were eached honored for their play at the Wyoming Brown & Gold Tournament by being named to the All-Tournament team. High School Teammate Reunite: Former Columbine High School teammates helped the Bears earn their first victory of the season on Sept. 5. Freshman Kerry Pitt (Class of 2004) and senior Cassie Sadusky (Class of 2001) each scored first half goals to help lead the Bears to a 2-1 victory over previously undefeated Delaware. 1-0 Games: The Bears 1-0 loss to Air Force on Aug. 27 marked the fifth 1-0 game they have been a part of in the past two years. Last season UNC held a 1-3 record in 1-0 games. Dating back to the beginning of the Tim Barrera era at UNC (the 1999 season), the Bears have a 10-12 record in 1-0 contests and a 41-38 all-time record in those type of matches. First of Three In-State Opponents: The Air Force match on Aug. 27 was the first of three in-state opponents on the Bears schedule this year. UNC also has road contests at Colorado (Oct. 1) and at Colorado College (Nov. 6). Home Sweet Home: Last season, due to the beginning of the move to Division I, the Bears played only two home matches all year long, finishing with a 1-1 record. This season the schedule is more beneficial to the squad, as six of 18 total matches and a pair of exhibitions will be played at the Butler-Hancock Soccer Field. The Bears hold a 25-7 (.781) record at home in the five years of the Barrera Era at UNC. Looking to Buck a Trend: The Bears have been shutout twice in four games this season (versus Air Force and Vermont). Last season the Bears were shutout seven times, which tied the school record also equalled in 1987. Division I Independents: This season, nine NCAA Division I Independent women s soccer teams have joined forces to award Player of the Week awards and compile individual and team statistics. The teams are Colorado College, IPFW, Kennesaw State, Longwood, North Dakota State,, South Carolina State, South Dakota State and Utah Valley State. Awards and statistics will be released on each Tuesday of the season beginning on Sept. 7. An index of award winners and other information on D-I Independent soccer can be found at: http://uncbears.collegesports.com/sports/w-soccer/spec-rel/ 081804aab.html SEASON NOTES DIVISION I INDEPENDENT STANDINGS (As of 9/6) Overall vs. D-I Indepen. The Bears are 13-6-1 all-time in home openers including winning nine of their last 11 game with the only other loss in that time period was a 1-0 loss to Metro State to kick off the 2001 home season. The Bears have outscored their opponents 13-7 in the last six home openers. East Coast Opponents: UNC played a pair of East Coast teams at the Wyoming Brown & Gold Tournament Sept. 3-5 in Vermont and Delaware, a rare occurance for the program. In the program s 19-year history, the Bears had only played seven teams located completely in the Eastern time zone (Cincinnati, Gannon, Mercyhurst, George Washington, North Carolina, North Carolina State and North Carolina-Greensboro) prior to the matchup with Vermont and Delaware. 2004 Soccer Game Notes 3

2004 University of Bears Women s Soccer Night Games: Aug. 31 s matchup with Air Force kicked off at 7 p.m. and marked only the fourth time in the past six seasons the team had played in a contest that had started at 6 p.m. or later. The team played at 6 p.m. against New Mexico on Sept. 12 of last season, Oct. 26, 2001 at Colorado College (6 p.m.) and Sept. 19, 1998 at Angelo State (6 p.m.). An Experience Factor: Last season the Bears roster featured nine seniors but 12 freshmen. This year the Bears only have four seniors and 11 freshmen. However, instead of only two sophomores like last season, the UNC roster has a little more experience with 10 second-year players in 2004. A Brutual Schedule: Last season, the Bears played 11 of their 16 contests against Division I teams (including three matchups with teams also transitioning to Division I). This season all 18 games will be against Division I squads, with four of those being against teams transitioning to Division I (Kennesaw State, North Dakota State, South Dakota State and Utah Valley State). Those D-I foes include a pair of teams that made the 2003 NCAA Tournament (Colorado and Nebraska), a conference champion (Big 12 Champion CU), a conference runner-up (the Sun Belt s North Texas) and the 2003 D-II National Champions (Kennesaw State who enters the season 43-1-1 over the last two seasons as they begin the move to Division I). Seven of the Bears opponents this season won at least 10 games in 2003. First-Ever Meetings: Eleven of the Bears 18 matchups this year are against teams they will be playing for the first-time ever (Baylor, CS-Fullerton, Delaware, Eastern Washington, Kennesaw State, Loyola Marymount, Nebraska, North Texas, Southern Utah, Vermont and Washington State). Two other opponents (Colorado and Wyoming) will be playing the Bears for only the second time in history. On the other end of the spectrum, the Bears will play Colorado College for the 13th time season; that fourth most they have ever played one single opponent (they have played Regis 15 times, the most of any opponent). Familiar Foes: already knows two of the teams on the schedule this season very well. North and South Dakota State are beginning the move to Division I this season and were members with UNC in the North Central Conference (NCC) just two seasons ago. The Bears and Bison have met seven times previously with UNC winning six of those contests. and South Dakota State have played three times, with the Bears winning all three games. claimed four NCC regular season championship, tied for the most all-time. The Move to Division I: The 2004-05 sports season marks year No. 2 in the reclassification process to Division I for the Bears. On May 10, 2002 the UNC Board of Trustees voted unanimously to approve a move for the UNC intercollegiate athletics program to NCAA Division I. The 2002-03 sports year marked the last season for the Bears in the North Central Conference and the NCAA Division II level and was an exploratory year in the move. Last year (2003-04) was the second season of the five-year reclassification period before the program officially becomes a Division I school in 2007-08. Over the next three years, UNC will be unable to compete in NCAA postseason competition. will be competiting as an independent during the 2004-05 school year and will look to find conference affiliation before the end of the reclassification period. Blue & Gold Luncheon: Every Monday during the season, Coach Tim Barrera and all in-season sport coaches will appear at the Blue & Gold Luncheon held at Old Chicago (2349 W. 29th Street) at Noon. The public is invited and can hear all about the happenings in Athletics and get a great lunch for only $7. The first luncheon was Aug. 30. and after a break on Sept. 6 because of Labor Day, the luncheons resume on Sept. 13 and run through the remainder of the semester. UNC Coaches Radio Show: The Coors Light UNC Coaches Radio Show will can be heard weekly on the Bears Radio Network (Newstalk 1310 KFKA and KSIR 1010) beginning on Aug. 31 and running through the rest of the season. All the fall sport coaches can be heard during the 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. hour with the first half of the show being devoted to the Bears football program and the rest being split among soccer, volleyball and cross country. The show is broadcast live from the State Armory (614 8th Ave.) in downtown Greeley. KFKA s Troy Coverdale serves as host of the show. The broadcast can also be heard online at http://www.1310kfka.com. 2004 trends The Bears are... 0-1 Overall. 0-1 At Home. 0-1 At Away matches. 1-1 At Neutral sites. 1-3 In their last five matches. 0-0 Versus Division I Independents. 1-0 When they score first. 1-0 When leading at halftime. 1-0 When they take more shots than opponent. 0-2 When making more saves than opponent. 1-2 When taking more corner kicks than opponent. 0-1 When committing fewer fouls than opponent. 0-0 When recording more assists than opponent. 1-2 In one-goal games. 0-1 In two-goal games. 0-0 In five-plus goal games. 0-2 In shutout games. 0-0 In overtime games. 1-2 In games starting before 5:00 p.m. 0-1 In games starting after 5:00 p.m. 0-0 On Monday. 0-1 On Tuesday. 0-0 On Wednesday. 0-0 On Thursday. 0-2 On Friday 0-0 On Saturday. 1-0 On Sunday. 0-2 In August. 1-1 In September. 0-0 In October. 0-0 In November. 2004 Soccer Game Notes 4
