It has a land area of 25.85 square kilometres and is 10 minutes away by ferry from the Marina Island Jetty in Lumut, Perak. Pangkor is open to visitors all year round with its serene golden beaches, blue waters, and cool refreshing breezes. Around Pangkor, lies a cluster of small islands with some of the best beaches on the west coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Besides local visitors, Pangkor is extremely popular among travelers from Europe. This tropical island, which is famed for its fishery products, has a population of 16,000 people consisting of Malay, Chinese, Indian and other races. These various ethnic groups provide an insight into the uniqueness of Malaysia s harmony and unity. Other than its fresh fish, Pangkor is also popular for its high quality dried fish. In general, there are six main sectors including fisheries that help the Pangkor community generate their income. They are: wholesale and retail; manufacturing, construction and utility; transportation; government services; and agricultural, forestry and farming. According to the Manjung City Council, Pangkor s fisheries sector contributes 53% to the economy; followed by wholesale/retail at 17%; and manufacturing, construction and utility at 12%. Despite its scenic beaches and lively fishery businesses, Pangkor suffers from major setbacks that prevent this island from achieving national and international tourism destination standard. Some of the major issues and problems include lack of tourism support services and facilities (e.g. international standard of accommodation and exhibition halls); inadequate tourism activities; and poor maintenance and management of tourism places. This seminar titled Internationalization of Pangkor: Translating Ideas into Effective Implementation aims to address these issues and explore possible ideas as well as share information, experiences and challenges for the development of tourism sectors in Pangkor Island. For more information, log on to www.pangkordialogue.com. This seminar will also witness the launch of the Pangkor International Development Dialogue (PIDD) that will be held on 19 21 October 2014 at the Swiss Garden Hotel and Resort in Lumut, Perak. The PIDD is an international dialogue series that promote exchange of knowledge and ideas in the areas of global and state development. This year s theme titled Good Governance for Inclusive Wealth explores issues pertaining to public services that spur socio-economic transformation and inclusive wealth that result in sustainable development and progress.
