Firefighter Foundation Development Programme The Fire Service College

In an ever changing environment where firefighters are facing new and challenging scenarios every day, the Fire Service College understands that firefighters at the start of their career need to be equipped with latest knowledge, skills and training in order for them to preform to their fullest. The Firefighter Foundation Development Programme (FFDP) is an intensive course focusing on laying the fundamental skills so that learners are able to safely attend operational incidents on completion of the programme. The course builds on developing the self-discipline, confidence, resilience and adaptability of the learners to underpin their first steps for a successful career in the fire and rescue service. Benefits of our FFDP: Provision of an accredited, recognisable and transferable Skills for Justice qualification Standardisation of training, meeting National Occupational Standards. Adherence with the demands and requirements of FRSs firefighter training and development Availability of night exercises Immersive scenarios Training at a world class incident ground Continuing professional development support Reduced training costs Flexible modular programme. 2 telephone: +44(0)1608 812984

Course content Our FFDP follows a modularised model, giving you the opportunity to decide the place, time and pace of delivery of training for both Wholetime and Retained Firefighters. You can also select additional content such as Water Responding or Safe Working at Height, enabling training to be tailored to your specific needs and delivered over a timeframe to suite you. Our standard FFDP course covers six fundamental modules, each with their own key learning outcomes: Basic Fire Ground Foundation Skills Breathing Apparatus and Tactical Ventilation Trauma Care and First Response Emergency Care Road Traffic Collision Hazardous Materials Scenario Exercises. The FFDP can be completed over an eight week period, or taken as separate modules, which can be undertaken in week or weekend blocks to facilitate Retained Duty System Firefighters. Over the last year, the College has run 8, 10, 12 and 14 week versions of FFDP, each tailored to the requirements of the service involved. Our typical programmes include: Wholetime 40 day programme 15 days: Foundation Skills 5 days: First Response Emergency Care (FREC) 5 days: Road Traffic Collision (RTC) 10 days: Breathing Apparatus (BA) 2 days: Hazardous Materials (HazMat) 3 days: Scenarios Retained 30 day programme 12 days: Foundation Skills 4 days: Road Traffic Collision (RTC) 11 days: Breathing Apparatus (BA) 1 day: Hazardous Materials (HazMat) 2 days: Scenarios Chris Kamara, FFDP Course Leader, Fire Service College The College Fire Station is the perfect setting for recruits to adopt the environment they will be exposed to after their initial training. After an intensive 7 weeks we test competencies by delivering realistic scenarios at all times in the day/night to accustom recruits to expectations required when the bells go down on station. The advantage of being able to extinguish a car, building or house fire at 3-4 am as a recruit before the first shift on station is fantastic and I m sure all firefighters would agree. In my opinion giving new recruits this kind of realistic training, venues and scenarios can only raise the skillset and standard of new firefighters. 4 telephone: +44(0)1608 812984

Assessed and Accredited Through our partnerships with a wide range of awarding bodies you can be assured that our training is independently assessed and accredited to both national and international standards. This course is underpinned by National Occupational Standards: CFF 01: Respond to Operational Incidents Requiring Breathing Apparatus CFF 02: Extricate Casualties from Situations of Entrapment CFF 03: Operate Fire Service Water Pumps CFF 04: Provide a First Response to Water Based Incidents FF 3: Save and Preserve Endangered Life FF 4: Resolve Fire and Rescue Operational Incidents FF 5: Protect the Environment from the Effects of Hazardous Materials. and by: NFPA Standard 1006. Our FFDP is accredited by the Skills for Justice Awards and the Royal Society for Public Health for the following qualifications: Gemma Salter Bedfordshire Fire and Rescue Service It has been a lifelong journey in just eight weeks. I have gone to places I didn t know my body and mind could get to. I ve dug deep and then some more. Out of every experience, good and bad, there is always something positive to take from it. Fears are conquered and the greatest challenge is yet to come. I can t wait to embrace it with my new extended family. NATIONAL OCCUPATIONAL STANDARDS SFJ Level 3 Diploma in Fire Service Operations in the Community RSPH Level 2 Award in Understanding Health Improvement. The College is an approved SFJ centre for the delivery of: Fire Service Foundation Skills Using BA in Fire and Rescue Trauma Care for the First Person on Scene Dealing with Hazardous Materials Dealing with Road Traffic Collisions. sales@fireservicecollege.ac.uk 5

On-site Facilities We believe that no other organisation in the world can match the facilities offered by our unique incident ground at Moreton-in-Marsh. We are able to expose your recruits to the wide range of scenarios that they may face once back in service including building fires, Urban Search and Rescue exercises, train derailments, motorway pile-ups and even ship rescues. Being on a self-contained site also enables recruits to experience other aspects of a firefighters life such as realistic night time exercises which might not be possible whilst training back at service. To find out more about the wide range of facilities that we have on site visit: www.fireservicecollege.ac.uk/facilities Open programme courses available We know that services are not always in a position to recruit in large numbers and it can often be a challenge to ensure the required training is provided in both an efficient and cost effective way. That is why the FSC has developed an open programme model that enables services to put forward their latest recruits to join with learners from other services to create a complete cohort. Bradley Lawrence Buckinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service Being able to use of the best training facilities in the country has been an amazing experience and I can happily say I ve taken the opportunity with both hands and thrown everything at it. I ve improved and learnt new and valuable life skills that will assist me with my career going forward. 6 telephone: +44(0)1608 812984

Graduation Day To mark the momentous achievement of successfully joining the UK Fire and Rescue Service the College does all it can to make the day as special as possible. Typically taking place on the final day of the course, friends, family and representatives from your service are invited to attend a special ceremony at the College to mark the occasion. Complete with a site tour, live demonstration on our world class incident ground, formal pass out parade, presentation ceremony and a buffet reception, the day is one to remember for all who attend. Over the past year we have seen learners from 16 different private sector and Fire and Rescue Services including: Next steps To find out more about our Fire Fighter Development Programme, or to discuss how the Fire Service College can support your organisation, please contact us at sales@fireservicecollege.ac.uk or call 01608 812984. sales@fireservicecollege.ac.uk 7
