Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail for Educators

The War of 1812 In the War of 1812, the United States took on the greatest naval power in the world, Great Britain, in a conflict that would have an immense impact on the young country s future. Causes of the war included British attempts to restrict U.S. trade, the Royal Navy s impressment of American seamen and America s desire to expand its territory.

The War of 1812 offers a chance to understand just how much local events can impact history on a national, and even global, level. While the war was fought on several fronts, including Canada and in the South, the Chesapeake Campaign offered some of the most meaningful and exciting confrontations of the war, changing the course of this nation. Just look at the number of historic events that occurred throughout the Chesapeake region, each celebrating a bicentennial this school year.

The Chesapeake Campaign (1813-1814) The British brought war to the Chesapeake region in 1813 and 1814. The Campaign of 1814 was a significant period because the British occupied our nation's capital after the American defeat at the Battle of Bladensburg, but were repulsed during the Battle for Baltimore. The events of the campaign are significant to American history because of their pivotal effect on the outcome of the War of 1812 and their effect on far-reaching aspects of the nation's identity.

The Star-Spangled Banner National Historic Trail is a120-mile land route signed and marked from south to north that tells the story of the War of 1812 in the Chesapeake Bay region. It connects historic sites and commemorates the events leading up to the Battle for Baltimore. The trail traces troop movements, introduces visitors to communities affected by the war, and highlights the Chesapeake region s distinctive landscapes and waterways. www.starspangledtrail.net

Most Americans are aware of The Battle of Baltimore and the Bombardment of Fort McHenry that led to the writing of the Star-Spangled Banner. The bicentennial of the Battle of Baltimore takes place September 10-16 with the Star-Spangled Spectacular, a 7-day free festival that celebrates the 200th birthday of our national anthem. Tall ships, Navy gray hulls and the Blue Angels will come to Baltimore s famed Inner Harbor to celebrate The Star-Spangled Banner and its place in American history.

But there is also a portion of Baltimore County that was integral to the defense of Baltimore and helped defeat the British advance on Baltimore and its fort. The BATTLE OF NORTH POINT

The Battle of North Point was fought on September 12, 1814, between General John Stricker's Maryland Militia and a British force led by Major General Robert Ross. An American militia force was able to inflict significant casualties on the British, killing General Ross, significantly demoralizing the troops under his command and leaving some of his units lost among woods and swampy creeks, with others in confusion. This combination prompted the British to delay their advance against Baltimore, buying valuable time to properly prepare for the defense of the city.

The Battle of North Point and the Battle of Baltimore took place in familiar areas of the County and provide familiar names like Nathan Towson and John Stricker.
