IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Reported by: TAN Chee Wei (FKE UTM) cheewei@utm.my 2 IEEE Conference on Energy Conversion (CENCON) The IEEE Conference on Energy Conversion (CENCON) is the second conference since the first successful kick start in 2014. This year, the CENCON was held in Berjaya Waterfront Hotel, Johor Bahru on 19-20 October. The main aim is to share the latest and state-of-the-art research in variety of electrical and electronic areas. At the same time it allows the international delegates to discover the Beautiful and Peaceful Malaysia. CENCON is organized by the IEEE Malaysia Power Electronics (PELS) Chapter and co-organized by the Faculty of Electrical Engineering, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM), Johor Bahru. The IEEE CENCON is one of the events, in which most of the committee members are from the Department of Electrical Power Engineering (POWER). From this year onward, it is to be held in every alternate year (biennially). The IEEE CENCON is technically cosponsored by the Korean Institute of Power Electronics (KIPE). To ensure its quality, a team of renowned International Advisory Committee comprises of experts in various areas of power electronics and drive systems were selected to oversee the program. In CENCON, two distinguished keynote speakers, namely Prof Hirofumi Akagi and Prof Pat Wheeler had presented their valuable research and shared their thoughts with all the delegates. Prof Hirofumi Akagi is from the Tokyo Institute of Technology Japan, a well-known IEEE Fellow in the area of motor control. Prof Pat Wheeler is with University of Nottingham United Kingdom, a well known IET Fellow who is an expert in matrix power converters. IEEE Power Electronics Society (PELS) Reported by: TAN Chee Wei (FKE UTM) cheewei@utm.my 3 IEEE Conference on Energy Conversion (CENCON) The Conference featured technical paper presentations as well as product exhibitions. This year, CENCON has received over 155 submissions from 20 countries. All papers have been peer reviewed by 623 experts in their respective fields. Out of these, 71.6% are accepted for oral presentations. There is approximately 42% increment in the number of paper submission as compared to last year. During the conference, the Genetron Technology Sdn Bhd has also joined the conference to exhibit their products. In CENCON, we have shortlisted ten best papers for the Prof. Dr. Muhammad Harunur Rashid Best Paper Awards. In which, only three best papers are presented with certificates and cash rewards. Besides that, there was also another competition during the conference, which is known as the Postgraduate Showcase Competition (PGSC). The competition is organized by Power Electronics Chapter of the IEEE Malaysia Section and CENCON. The PGSC is open for all postgraduate students from universities around the world to present and showcase their projects/inventions/prototypes at CENCON. Similarly, for PGSC, there were also three winners with certificates and cash rewards. The successful conducted CENCON would like to thank all delegates that have presented their papers during the conference. The next CENCON will be in year 2017. Hope to see you again then! 15 IEEE Component, Packaging & Manufacturing Technology Society (CPMT) IEEE Day at Yangon University on Oct 5-8, by Kim. S. Siow There are many benefits of joining IEEE. Amongst them are the various on-line resources available to members such as the professional development courses like Standards Education Activities (EA) and IEEE Massive Open Online Courses. http://theinstitute.ieee.org/briefings/business/edx-adds-massive-open-online-courses-from-ieee. Another benefits for IEEE members are the Region 10 grants to support Educational Activities to be carried out by IEEE members in Malaysia and abroad. Further information are available here: http://www.ieeefoundation.org/what-we-do/educational-funds (Alternatively, readers can write to your chapter chair for further information at the beginning of the year). Every IEEE members can apply them and each project is judged by its own merits. Malaysian IEEE members have been very successful in the past few years; winning 8 of the 13 submitted proposal in. Myanmar has always intrigued me and it is considered the last frontier of Asia. So, I applied and received an EA grant to conduct a two day scientific writing for publication workshop at their most prestigious university in Myanmar i.e. University of Yangon. IEEE Day from Yangon University, Oct 5-8, On IEEE Day, I began a two-day course for more than 100 unique participants as not all of them attended both days. I also took these opportunities to talk about IEEE activities for the scientific community as well as delivering two lectures on Nanosilver paste as bonding materials and Plasma Modification for Biochip Materials at the Physics and Chemistry Department respectively. The courses and lectures are well received by the locals. Myanmar researchers and engineers are eager to learn and join the world scientific communities. It is an eye-opening experience for me as well as them who have not published many research works outside their country.
