California Water Environment Association - San Diego Section October 2010 President s Report As I reflect back on the first half of my year as president, I am humbled by the dedication and commitment of our many volunteers who provide a great service to our members. This summer, Ken Fonda, led our very successful annual golf tournament to raise funds for CWEA s Kirt Brooks Memorial Scholarship. Ken was joined by several volunteers who helped with registration and logistics. As a result, we have raised more than $1,000 this year. The Kirt Brooks Memorial Water Environment Scholarship is a scholarship for students in or interested in the water environment industry who are members of CWEA or sponsored by CWEA members. Start thinking now as scholarship applications are due on February 1st, 2011. We held our Wastewater Lift Station Optimization Workshop in August. Thanks to Ken Burtech for bringing this great workshop and instructor to our attention. The workshop was attended by 30 eager CWEA members while our own, Kent Bricker, artfully managed logistics. Many thanks for our instructor, Bruce Borders with Control Systems West, who taught us about Basic Control and specialized features such as station trouble monitoring and status communication. To continue to provide our members with the opportunities to tour the many great wastewater treatment plants in our region, our local section organized for a lunch and tour of the Hale Avenue Resource Recovery Facility. Many thanks to Nicki Branch and the City of Escondido for hosting the 20 wastewater professionals who attended and learned more about this state-of-the-art 18 mgd activated sludge treatment plant that treats domestic, commercial, and industrial wastewater serving a population of 192,000 in the City of Escondido and Rancho Bernardo. We held our 3rd Annual Joint Vendor Fair along with the California Water Works Group. Corey Harrell led a team of volunteers to manage this amazing event which attracted more than 150 attendees and some of the industry s leading vendors of wastewater equipment and technology. Training sessions were held throughout the day and Looking forward, we have some great upcoming events. Read on for more details!
