California Water Environment Association - San Diego Section January 2011 President s Report As I take proverbial pen to paper and begin drafting my last President s report, it takes me back to my first experiences with CWEA. As a new recruit to our exciting and important field, I had a lot to learn about wastewater treatment and all of the ins and outs of our industry. CWEA was incredibly helpful to me as I expanded my learning. From informative lunch and dinner meetings, fascinating plant tours, educational workshops, and valuable networking, I began to form a better defined view of our field. A view that included both the details I needed to perform effectively in my job and the big picture I needed to help prepare my boss and team for the challenges ahead. What I love most about CWEA is that is has something for everyone. We have certifications for those seeking accreditation for their area of expertise, training for those learning new skills, tours and meetings for networking, conferences which combine almost all of these items, and great publications like this Bull Sheet. Each year we come together at the end of January to celebrate CWEA at our Annual Banquet. This is our opportunity to recognize the leaders who make our industry great and to honor our local award recipients and send them to compete at the State level. I always enjoy this event as a way to acknowledge the successes of peers and hope that you will join us all. Our event organizer, Mark Hill, has arranged for some special entertainment sure to make us all smile and laugh. Thank you for a great year as your president I thoroughly enjoyed it! May 2011 bring you every success, Tish Dinner Meeting Recap On October 28, 2010, curious CWEA members from throughout San Diego County gathered at the Butcher Shop to learn about the City of San Diego s Water Purification Demonstration Project. The City s project manager, Anthony Van, P.E., provided an overview of water use in San Diego County and explained the City s goals to diversify our local water supply. We were lucky to have the newest County Water Authority Board President (and CWEA Past President for the local section and state), Mike Hogan, in the audience to help explain the project within the County Water Authority perspective. The project is examining the use of advanced water purification technology on high quality recycled wastewater to determine the feasibility of a full-scale Reservoir Augmentation project to provide safe and reliable water for residents of San Diego. Potential benefits of implementing Reservoir Augmentation in San Diego: Provide a local and sustainable supply of high-quality drinking water for San Diego (Continued on Page 2)
Dinner Meeting Recap Continued Improve the quality of water in the San Vicente Reservoir Decrease dependence on imported water Increase utilization of recycled water Provide a supply of water that uses less energy than imported water Have a positive impact on the environment by producing less discharge into the ocean and working toward lower carbon emissions The project s public outreach program will be presenting an informative presentation to the group and free tours of the Advanced Water Purification Facility will be offered following its completion in 2011. The San Diego Public Utilities Department invites you to visit the Water Purification Demonstration Project web site at www.purewatersd.org to learn more. The CWEA San Diego Section plans to schedule a tour for our members in 2011 stay tuned! CWEA-SDS Bull Sheet Page 2

This is your San Diego Section Training and Certification Program (TCP) Chair welcoming you to our new Section in the Newsletter TCP CORNER. On every issue from now on, we will target some essential knowledge areas and have a mini quiz. This edition s topic is Unit Conversion. Unit Conversion Units are a determinable quantity adopted as a standard of measurement. There are two basic unit systems: Metric and English. These are used interchangeably and we need to convert them often. Find your conversion factor sheet and get number crunching on these ten problems: 1. Convert 60 miles/hour to feet/second. 2. What gpm size pump do I need for 3.5MGD? 3. How many feet of water (head) am I pumping against if I measure 30psi? 4. How many cubic feet per second am I discharging if the flow rate is 1.5MGD? 5. How many kw do I need for a 15HP motor? 6. How many gallons are in a 34,000 cubic feet settling tank? 7. How many pounds of water are in a 200 gallon tank? 8. 10 acre feet per day are falling in a drainage area, how many gallons per minute is this? 9. A chemical supplier quoted me a price for 4,500 kilograms, how many pounds is this? 10. A 10 horsepower pump runs for 2,100 hours per year. How many kilowatt-hours will be used? Hope you have enjoyed participating in this as much as I enjoyed putting this together. Sincerely, Soma Bhadra PROTEUS Consulting Upcoming Events Mark your calendars for 2011 CWEA San Diego Section Events: 2011 Awards Banquet and Board Installation on January 29, 2011 CWEA SDS Annual Golf Tournament on May 13, 2011 Vendor Fair on September 12, 2011 Collection Systems Workshop on November 9, 2011 TCP Unit Conversion Answers: 6. 254,000 gal 7. 1,670 lbs 8. 2,260 gpm 9. 9,900 lbs 10. 16,900 kw h 1. 88 ft/s 2. 2,430 gpm 3. 69 ft 4. 2.32 cfs 5. 11.2 kw CWEA-SDS Bull Sheet Page 3
