The Awards The ICE South East England Engineering Excellence Awards celebrate outstanding civil engineering achievement, innovation and ingenuity in South East England. South East England is defined as Kent, Sussex, Surrey, Hampshire, Isle of Wight, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire, but excludes any London Boroughs. Previous winners of our awards include The Hard Interchange, District Hospitals Ghana - Dodowa Hospital, Wokingham Rail Station and Link Road Re-Development, Broomhill Sands Coastal Defence Scheme, Reading Elevated Railway and Portsmouth Flood Alleviation Scheme. The Awards will be presented at a dinner at the prestigious Grand Hotel in Brighton on Thursday 19 July 2018. Categories and Criteria To mark the ICE s 200 year anniversary, the South East England will include new categories to reflect the achievements of members and variety of projects across the region. Individual Achievement Awards These awards are to recognise individuals making an outstanding contribution to the profession. Employers are invited to nominate their brightest and best. Greatest Individual Contribution to Civil Engineering For an individual who has best demonstrated the professionalism and integrity of a civil engineer. We are looking for thoses who have gone above and beyond to advance the profession and share the value of Civil Engineering in the community. Steve Tebb Award for Individual Excellence in Schools Outreach The award honours ICE Members that have shown outstanding commitment to civil engineering by giving their time to represent the ICE and promoting the profession to inspire the next generation. One to Watch for Young Professionals This award is designed to recognise and reward the most accomplished and promising young professional. This award is open to Graduate Engineers, Apprentices and Technicians who have greatly contributed to the profession in the last 12 months. Judging Criteria A judging panel of senior ICE representatives will look for entries that clearly demonstrate how the individual has: Promoted civil engineering to the general public, young people and/or other professionals. Sought to develop and promote a culture of fairness and inclusion within their organisation Demonstrated integrity and professionalism in their employment and voluntary activities. Used their enthusiasm to inspire and motivate others Developed innovative practices or ways of working that have had a tangible effect on the industry. 1

Project Awards Best Infrastructure Project This award recognises civil engineering excellence in the design and construction of projects relating to transport; geotechnical; flood; costal defence; energy; waste or regeneration. It recognises the impact infrastructure has on the local or regional economy and the wellbeing of the people and businesses in it. Community Benefit Award This award recognises the contribution civil engineering makes to local communities. This award may be given to a project that, through close working with a community, ensured the construction and delivery of the final product brought additional benefits to the community, for example through a school s programme or training schemes to ensure employment of local residents. Innovation Award This category rewards ground breaking developments in products, materials and ways of working that not only enhance outcomes of the project entered but also change practices on future projects. The entry can apply to an entirely new method or to the development of an existing method to improve outcomes. Award for Sustainability and Resilience This award recognises the best civil engineering intervention that has significantly improved the sustainability and resilience of a new or existing piece of infrastructure or a building. The judges will be assessing the difference the intervention made compared to other possible approaches. Engineered in South East England This category rewards projects of excellence situated outside South East England - developed by teams based in the region. It recognises the significance of work conducted by the region s civil engineers both nationally and globally. Special Awards These may be awarded at the discretion of the judging panel for projects that they feel demonstrate a significant contribution beyond the categories identified above. For example, the award could be given to a restoration of historic infrastructure or for outstanding project management. Branch Awards It is awarded to the project judged to be the best example of engineering excellence in each branch. Brassey Award (Kent and East Sussex) for Engineering Excellence This award is drawn from all entries located in Kent and East Sussex. South Award for Engineering Excellence This award is drawn from all entries located in the ICE South branch area (West Sussex, Hampshire and Isle of White). Thames Valley Award for Engineering Excellence This award is drawn from all entries located in the Thames Valley area (Surrey, Berkshire, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire). 2

Overall winner ICE People s Choice Award The general public will vote for their favourite Civil Engeering project in South East England. All shortlisted entries will be eligible into this award. The winner of theis award will represrnt the region in the ICE s international people choice award in September 2018. Greatest Contribution to South East England This, the highest award, is given to the project that most beneficially impacts those living and working in South East England; and best showcases the vital contribution that civil engineers make to people s lives. Entry Criteria Entries should be predominantly devised, designed and constructed in South East England, with the exception of the Engineered in South East England award. Entries should be sufficiently implemented for an assessment of their in-service performance to be appraised. Entries are welcomed from projects of all sizes. Successful projects will be expected to demonstrate innovation, creativity and social value whilst embedding a culture of safety, inclusion and sustainability. All entries should clearly demonstrate how they meet the following criteria: Excellence in project management and financial control Set out how project outcomes compared to deadlines and budgets set Explain measures taken to remain on time and on budget Exemplary health and safety record Demonstrate actions taken to minimise accidents and maximise team wellbeing Demonstrate how a culture of health and safety was instilled in all aspects of business State how many serious accidents occurred over the life of the project Innovative design, construction and use of technology Demonstrate innovation in methods used and use of materials to deliver project requirements and overcome challenges Demonstrate how leading edge technology was used and the measurable benefits from doing so Explain how learnings from innovation are being shared with the wider industry Positive impact on South East England Set out how the project is making a difference to the locality of the project, economically and to the lives of people living and working in the local area or wider region. Explain how the impact of the final design on the public s and user s perception and experience of the finished product was maximised Teamwork and inclusion Demonstrate collaborative working across organisations involved in the project Explain the approach to developing young people and training 3

Explain how an inclusive team environment was brought about Demonstrate successful working with stakeholders Demonstrate how the team worked with local communities to benefit local people throughout the life of the project as well as upon completion The inclusion of environmentally sustainable practices Demonstrate measurable improvement to outcomes such as air quality; carbon production, energy and water demand. Please explain how the criteria has been met in no more than 2 sides of A4. Up to 8 images images can also be submitted with the applicaiton. Judging process Entries will be assessed by a judging panel made up of ICE South East England members and senior representatives from South East England s build environment community. Entrants may be contacted by a member of the judging panel, should the judges require further information to reach their decision. Completed application forms should be returned to see.awards@ice.org.uk by 29 March 2018. All shortlisted project entries will then be considered for the three branch awards, people s choice award and the Great Contribution to South East England. There is an Early Bird Entry fee per project: 200 (including VAT) if submitted before Wednesday 28 Febuary, 2018. Thereafter entry fee is 280 (including VAT). The awards are free to enter for local authorities. Please tick the relevant section on the Payment Form if this applies to your organisation. Entries may be submitted in the name of an individual organisation, or a group of organisations. Where entries are submitted by a group of organisations, the organisations in that group should represent the major disciplines delivering the project or intervention to enable scoring in each of the judging criteria. Where entrants wish to enter a project for more than one award, they are required to submit a separate application for each category entered. Please note: All documents and photographs submitted as part of the entry may be used in future ICE publicity material, unless specifically requested otherwise. ICE will assume that the person(s) submitting the entry has obtained the necessary permissions to use the supporting material for the entry and associated ICE publicity, and has also informed all relevant parties of the entry submission. Signing the confirmation on the Application Form confirms that the entrant has read and accepts the rules and submission requirements. 4
