New Berlin Recreation Department A Message to Our Friends Welcome to our 2018 Summer Recreation Activity Guide! We hope you may find your Perfect Fit this session by participating in one or more of our recreation programs, classes, trips or leagues. Our department is proud to offer a wide variety of recreational opportunities any age is sure to enjoy. Be sure to stay active this summer and explore all that New Berlin has to offer! Summer is the perfect time of the year to find your Perfect Fit with a familiar class or something new to re-commit to that annual New Year s fitness goal you made months ago. Sign up for a Zumba, Yoga or Pilates class to help you along with those goals. Youth participants can join a wide variety of dance classes and camps like Poms, Cheer or Hip Hop. We also offer parent/child classes such as Music Makers and More, and Tykes Gymnastics classes which are great ways for youth to release some energy. If you are looking for that Perfect Fit for your child to participate in while you work, check out our Playground program held at Hickory Grove all summer long. We feature weekly field trips, hands-on art activities, group sports and games to keep your child active and interested. Best of all, Playgrounds gets its participants outside instead of stuck in front of a TV all summer. Safety Town, BBQ Cooking, Staci Joers Cooking Classes and Swim Lessons are programs that have been a staple in the New Berlin Community for many years and we are proud to offer them once more this summer. Families are encouraged to check out our free Movies In The Park series sponsored by Pro Healthcare Regency Senior Communities. We are also looking forward to our 3rd Annual Camping In The Park event the whole family will enjoy. These are great opportunities the whole family can enjoy and bond over while taking in the picturesque, park ambiance. Our Recreation Department is proud to offer new registration software to our valued participants, Active Network. This industry-leading software is much more user-friendly than our previous software and allows you to save time by registering for programs or park shelters at home. As always, participants in our classes can register in person at our recreation office or by mailing in a registration form. No online registration would be necessary in these instances. We value your opinion and are constantly striving to develop new and innovative programs and services. Do you have an idea for a new class or program you would like us to offer? Do you have a special interest or talent that you would like to share with others? If the answer is yes, please give us a call at (262) 797-2443, check us out on Facebook, or send us an email. We are here to serve your family s recreational needs! We invite you and your family to find your Perfect Fit with exciting activities for the whole family. Recreation Is Your Best Investment! American Red Cross Learn to Swim Program Class Structure American Red Cross certified Water Safety Instructors teach swimming skills along with Lifeguards in the water as Swim Aides. Courses are divided into six levels. Swimmers must start at Level 1 and pass each level Beginners (B) and Advanced (A) before registering for the next level. Participants will be given a progress report at the conclusion of each session listing the skills they have completed. Children often need to repeat certain levels before advancing on to the next level. Don t get discouraged. Prerequisites: We have added prerequisites to our computer registration program to assure that everyone is in the correct swimming level. This will help insure that the swim classes move smoothly for everyone. New to Our Program? If you are new to our program and are starting in one of the level programs above 1B, you will need to register in-person or by mail as the on-line registration software will not recognize that you have successfully completed the prerequisites for the program. Parent Observation and Expectation To create the best possible learning environment, spectators will only be allowed in the pool area for a few minutes on the first day of class and for the entire class on the last day of lessons. On the first day, parents will be excused after roll call and the introductory speech. Depending on the parent s comfort level, it is not necessary to come in the pool area on the first day of class. Throughout the session, parents/guardians are encouraged to speak with their child s instructor before or after class to check on the progress of their child. Pool Temperature Requests have been made by swim participants for varying swim water temperatures. Due to limited capabilities of pool equipment controlling these temperatures, the high school maintenance department is making every effort to maintain a temperature of 80. Ist Day of Class All students should report to the locker room where they should dress, shower and wait for the Locker Room Attendant to explain procedures. Important Swimming Registration Notes 1. You must wait until your child has completed a current session of swim instruction before registering for another session. 2. Forestry Notes: Spring/Summer 2018 Paul Fliss, City Forester Forestry Notes National Fish and Wildlife Fund Grant Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Program The City of New Berlin was awarded the National Fish and Wildlife Fund Grant to create a project known as New Berlin Wetland Ecology Trail and Community Gathering Area. The press release went out in January and there has been a number of accomplishments with several tasks remaining. As an overview, some of the Grant components are as follows: Wetland delineation of proposed Park parcels and the route of trail. Define the route of the New Berlin Wetland Ecology Trail (New Berlin W.E.T.) Invasive species removal and trash clean-up within the Deer Creek corridor, including replanting native prairie plants and streambank stabilization. Construction of platforms along the creek for wildlife viewing using wood salvaged from our own harvested Emerald Ash Borer infested trees. Conceptual designs for the Library Green Park behind the New Berlin Public Library. Creation of ecologic interpretive signs and installation at the vista areas and along the route of the W.E.T. Trail. Wildlife habitat enhancement including a Bluebird trail, Wood Duck houses and bat houses. To date, the wetland delineation has been completed and entered into the City GIS database. About 100 Fifth Grade Students from Elmwood Elementary toured the proposed trail route and are creating the ecology signs. They have had help from a DNR Wildlife Ecologist and utilized the resources at the Library at the end of the field trip. The Fed-Ex employees and the New Berlin Garden Club members are tasked to perform the invasive species removal and platform construction. The Wisconsin Waterfowl volunteers have provided wood duck and bluebird house designs and installation while working with Eagle Scout candidates. In addition, the New Berlin Prospect Lions Club has the task of planting 20 trees at the Library Green Park area. All of this work is supported with the help of the Streets Department laborers and machinery, the Department of Community Development planners and engineers, and the Parks, Buildings and Grounds Department for organization and assistance to our volunteers as needed. Finally, this project could not happen without support from our Mayor and community leaders who facilitate the needs of the businesses and residents to this engaging project. The funds for this project come from Fed-Ex Cares and the NFWF general fund with the volunteer and in-house labor as match. Upon completion, the net cost will be nothing to the taxpayers and we will have a great opportunity for our citizens and visitors to take part in outdoor activities and engage with the wildlife in our own City Center. The NFWF Grant Narrative can be viewed on the or for additional information call the PB&G office at (262) 797-2467. 35
