Plicy - Supervised Clinical Practice Origin Date: January 14, 2014 Last Evaluated: February 5, 2015 Respnsible Party: Directr f Clinical Educatin Minimum Review Frequency: Annually Apprving Bdy: Principal Faculty DPAS Assciated Frms: Institutin/Facility Affiliatin Agreement Preceptr Affiliatin Agreement Practice Prfile Fllw up Site/Preceptr Evaluatin Preceptr Prfile Clinical Site Visit Student Evaluatin f Preceptr/Clinical Site Mid-rtatin Evaluatin Clinical Perfrmance Evaluatin ARC-PA Assciated Standards: A1.02 - There must be written and signed agreements between the PA prgram and/r spnsring institutin and the clinical affiliates used fr supervised clinical practice experiences that define the respnsibilities f each party related t the educatin prgram fr students. ANNOTATION: Agreements typically specify whse plicies gvern and dcument student access t educatinal resurces and clinical experiences. While ne agreement between the spnsring institutin and clinical entity t cver multiple prfessinal disciplines is acceptable, these agreements include specific ntatins acknwledging the terms f participatin between the PA prgram and clinical entity. A1.03g - The spnsring institutin is respnsible fr addressing apprpriate security and safety measures fr PA students and faculty in all lcatins where instructin ccurs. A1.11 - The spnsring institutin must supprt the prgram in securing clinical sites and preceptrs in sufficient numbers fr prgram-required clinical practice experiences. A2.16 - All instructinal faculty serving as supervised clinical practice experience preceptrs must hld a valid license that allws them t practice at the clinical site. A2.17 - In each lcatin t which a student is assigned fr supervised clinical practice experiences, there must be an instructinal faculty member designated by the prgram t assess and supervise the student s prgress in achieving learning utcmes. ANNOTATION: The prgram is expected t infrm students at each lcatin which instructinal faculty member is serving in this rle fr the lcatin and hw t cntact this faculty member.

A3.03 - Students must nt be required t prvide r slicit clinical sites and preceptrs fr prgram required rtatins. ANNOTATION: The crdinatin f clinical practice experiences invlves identifying, cntracting and evaluating sites and preceptrs fr suitability as a required r elective rtatin experience. Students may make suggestins t principal faculty fr sites and preceptrs, but are nt required t d s. Studentsuggested sites and preceptrs are t be reviewed, evaluated, and apprved fr educatinal suitability by the prgram. B1.10 - The prgram shuld rient instructinal faculty t the specific learning utcmes it requires f students. ANNOTATION: Prgram and principal faculty need t wrk cllabratively with instructinal faculty in designing curses with apprpriate learning utcmes and student assessment tls that reflect the learning utcmes expected f students. B3.01 - PA students must be clearly identified in the clinical setting t distinguish them frm physicians, medical students and ther health prfessin students and graduates. B3.02 - Supervised clinical practice experiences must enable students t meet prgram expectatins and acquire the cmpetencies needed fr clinical PA practice. ANNOTATION: It is anticipated that the prgram expectatins f students will address the types f patient encunters essential t preparing them fr entry int practice. It is required that at a minimum these will include preventive, emergent, acute, and chrnic patient encunters. B3.05 - Instructinal faculty fr the supervised clinical practice prtin f the educatinal prgram must cnsist primarily f practicing physicians and PAs. B3.06 - Supervised clinical practice experiences shuld ccur with: (a) physicians wh are specialty bard certified in their area f instructin, (b) PAs teamed with physicians wh are specialty bard certified in their area f instructin r (c) ther licensed health care prviders experienced in their area f instructin. B3.07 - Supervised clinical practice experiences shuld ccur with preceptrs practicing in the fllwing disciplines: family medicine, internal medicine, general surgery, pediatrics, b/gyn, and behaviral and mental health care. ANNOTATION: PA educatin requires a breadth f supervised clinical practice experiences t help students appreciate the differences in apprach t patients taken by thse with varying specialty educatin and experience. SCPE used fr required rtatins are expected t address the fundamental principles f the abve disciplines as they relate t the clinical care f patients. Subspecialists serving as preceptrs might, by advanced training r current practice, be t specialty fcused t prvide the fundamental principles fr required rtatins in the abve disciplines. Reliance n subspecialists as preceptrs fr required rtatins in the abve disciplines is cntrary t the intent f this standard. C4.01 - The prgram must define, maintain and dcument effective prcesses fr the initial and nging evaluatin f all sites and preceptrs used fr supervised clinical practice experiences t ensure that sites and preceptrs meet prgram defined expectatins fr learning utcmes and perfrmance evaluatin measures. ANNOTATION: An effective prcess r prcesses invlves the prgram establishing criteria by which t initially evaluate new sites and preceptrs as well as thse that have an nging relatinship with the prgram. The prcess(es) will fcus n the established criteria and fit the individual prgram. C4.02 - The prgram must dcument that each clinical site prvides the student access t physical facilities, patient ppulatins and supervisin necessary t fulfill prgram expectatins f the clinical experience. ANNOTATION: Site evaluatin invlves prgram faculty mnitring the sites used fr supervised clinical practice experiences, and mdifying them as necessary, t ensure the expected learning utcmes will be met by each student by prgram cmpletin. It is expected that faculty dcument that differences in clinical settings d nt impede the verall accmplishment f expected learning utcmes. Dcumentatin shws that preceptrs are prviding bservatin and supervisin f student perfrmance while n supervised clinical practice experiences and that they are prviding feedback and mentring t students. 2
