Summit 2018 Accelerating Africa s Single Digital Market General Information 7-10 May 2018 Kigali - Rwanda Powered by

H.E. Paul Kagame President of the Republic of Rwanda & Chairman of the Smart Africa Board If technology is entrenching divides, rather than equalising opportunities, then we are not harnessing it well. Access to technology information must also not distinguish between rich and poor. So long as women and girls are lagging behind then we are not on the right track. We must deliver on technology s promise to bridge divides, rather than deepen them.

About this year s Transform Africa Summit The recently signed Continental Free Trade Area agreement (CFTA) is a significant milestone towards growing trade for Africa. According to the African Union, the CFTA is targeted to bring together all African countries comprising 1.2 billion people and a combined GDP of over $3.4 trillion under a single continental market for goods and services, including free movement of businesspeople and investments, and expansion of intra-african trade. The theme for this years Transform Africa Summit is Accelerating Africa s Single Digital Market. It is a call to embrace one solution that will increase the pace at which we realise the benefits of the CFTA, this solution being Digital - A Smart CFTA. Central to a Smart CFTA strategy are 5 pillars:- Purpose: to achieve Africa s economic independence and live with the world in healthy interdependence. People: starting with Heads of State and Government, and other leaders who make policies to members of our communities, youth and women who CFTA is designed for. Partnership: between governments, the private sector, academia, civil society and communities, especially women and our very innovative and creative youth. Profits: option for business and trade rather than aid or charity to meet Africa s development challenges and tap into her limitless opportunities. Platforms: Establishment of five continental digital platforms to accelerate the CFTA journey. 1. Digital infrastructure 2. Content a case for a Pan-African content exchange platform 3.
