2018 Spring Graduation Information
SPRING GRADUATION 2018 Duquesne University welcomes all members of the Duquesne community parents, family members, guests, faculty and administrators to Spring Graduation 2018 to celebrate and reflect on the success and achievements of our graduates. The ceremony will be held in the on Friday, May 11, at 2 p.m. President Kenneth G. Gormley will officially confer all degrees on the graduates. Candidates for graduation are recommended to receive an academic degree by the Dean of their school and are notified in writing of their graduation status by the Office of the University Registrar. Attendance at Commencement by graduates is strongly encouraged but not compulsory. However, all candidates must register their response to this invitation at the official Graduation website: duq.edu/commencement. Following are general guidelines to assist you and your guests: Diplomas are not distributed at the commencement exercises nor are they automatically mailed to students. You must indicate your preference of distribution (mail or pick-up) at duq.edu/commencement. A Baccalaureate Mass for graduates, families and guests will precede the Commencement Ceremony in the at noon. Please be aware that once Mass begins, entry to the Palumbo Center will be restricted to the hallways. Seating in the auditorium will be curtailed so as not to interfere with Mass. No seating will be allowed during the distribution of Holy Communion. No tickets are required for any of the events. Therefore it is very important that you register for all events you plan to attend at duq.edu/commencement. So that we may be properly prepared for the ceremonies, please indicate the actual number of guests who will accompany you to each of the activities. All on-campus parking, including the Locust Garage, will be available to graduates and guests without charge. Special accommodations for handicap parking can be arranged by calling, in advance, the Director of Parking at 412-396-5267. Additionally, University Police will be available to provide directions and instructions for drop-off in front of the Palumbo Center. Handicap seating for the Friday commencement ceremony is very limited. Please call the Office of Conference and Event Services at 412.396.5131 and register for these seats. Kickoff to Graduation, an event where graduating students can have their questions answered about happenings during Commencement, will be held on Wednesday, March 14, 2018, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the Africa Room of the Duquesne Union. Graduates can do everything from order their cap and gown, to purchase their Duquesne class ring to learn about alumni opportunities, among other offerings. SPRING GRADUATION EVENTS DIPLOMAS Diplomas are not distributed at the commencement exercises nor are they automatically mailed to students. You must indicate your diploma distribution preference (mail or pick-up) at duq.edu/commencement. Due to processing requirements, most diplomas will be available after June 12, 2018 and can be picked up at the Office of the University Registrar or mailed. FRIDAY, MAY 11, 2018 BACCALAUREATE MASS noon All graduates, families and guests are invited to attend a Baccalaureate Mass to share in a spiritual celebration of gratitude for an education for the mind, heart and spirit. Graduates who choose to participate should report in gown (no cap) to the Auxiliary Gymnasium of the no later than 11:30 a.m. Procession begins promptly at noon. COMMENCEMENT CEREMONY 2 p.m. All students participating in the Commencement Ceremony must arrive in cap and gown by 1:30 p.m. Graduates should report directly to the Auxiliary Gymnasium of the. Degrees will be conferred upon all graduates as a group at this ceremony. Students will be recognized individually and receive their diploma jacket at their school diploma ceremony (see inside).
DIPLOMA CEREMONIES Each school will hold individual ceremonies to personally recognize each graduating student with the traditional distribution of diploma jackets. There will be no limit on guest attendance for these ceremonies. Graduates and their guests should follow the guidelines below. FRIDAY, MAY 11, 2018 MCANULTY COLLEGE AND GRADUATE SCHOOL OF LIBERAL ARTS 6 p.m. Prior to the Liberal Arts Diploma Ceremony, a reception for graduates and their families will be held in the Charles J. Dougherty Ballroom, Power Center, from 4 to 5 p.m. Following the reception, Graduates are to report in cap and gown by 5:15 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gymnasium of the. SATURDAY, MAY 12, 2018 MARY PAPPERT SCHOOL OF MUSIC 9 a.m. Union Ballroom Graduates should report to the Africa Room no later than 8:15 a.m. Individual instructions regarding order of procession, seating, etc. will be given at that time. Procession lines will form promptly at 8:50 a.m. There will be a reception after the diploma ceremony in the Charles J. Dougherty Ballroom, Power Center. PALUMBO DONAHUE SCHOOL OF BUSINESS 9 a.m. Graduates should assemble at 8:15 a.m. in the Auxiliary Gymnasium of the A.J. Palumbo Center. A reception with light refreshments will be held on the Mellon Hall patio, Academic Walk side, immediately following the ceremony. BAYER SCHOOL OF NATURAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SCIENCES noon Graduates should report promptly at 11:15 a.m. in the Auxiliary Gymnasium of the for robing. BIOMEDICAL ENGINEERING noon Union Ballroom Graduates should report to the Africa Room no later than 11:15 a.m. You will be greeted by members of Biomedical Engineering staff to assist you in lining up. Following the ceremony, an informal reception for graduates and their families will be held in the Charles J. Dougherty Ballroom, Power Center. SCHOOL OF NURSING 3 p.m. Graduates should assemble by 2:15 p.m. in the Auxiliary Gymnasium of the A.J. Palumbo Center. Staff will assist candidates in line-up. Following the ceremony, a reception will be held in the Charles J. Dougherty Ballroom, Power Center.
