welcome Trust Talk AUGUST 2016 From Claire Molloy, Chief Executive Welcome to the latest issue of Trust Talk, which I m very proud to say was recently short-listed in the UK Public Sector Communications Awards for Publication of the Year this is a really positive achievement and one of its strengths is that it celebrates the good work that is being undertaken by our staff day in day out. This is really important because it is often the more controversial issues that are talked about the most, and we must not let this overshadow the brilliant work of all of our staff across the system. One of the issues in the spotlight at the moment is community hospitals. Much of this stems from longer term plans being developed for the provision of services within our communities as part of the wider Success Regime plans for West, North and East Cumbria. In the here and now, we are also having to implement business continuity plans because of staff shortages. You can read more about this in the hot topics section of Trust Talk or on our website however, I can assure you we are doing everything we can to return to normal as soon as we can guarantee safe staffing levels. Since the last issue, the Trust has undertaken an assessment of the quality and safety concerns on Kentmere, our mental health inpatient unit at Westmorland General Hospital, and it was agreed that the unit should remain open pending public consultation. The feedback we received from the local community and staff really helped to shape that decision and it was nice to hear how highly valued our services and staff are. I am, however, very sorry for any worry and anxiety that was felt I appreciate this has been a very uncertain and unsettling time for both staff and service users, but it was important that we took the time to fully assess the situation. We will keep you updated on this and in this issue you can also find out more about our progress with the Care Quality Commission action plan following our comprehensive inspection last year. It s also been a big few months for nursing, with Nurses Day in May and the Trust s Celebrating Nursing event in July which you can read more about on page 15. Our most senior nurse Dr Sara Munro, is leaving us this month to take up a well-deserved Chief Executive position at Leeds & York Partnership Trust. Clare Parker, our Associate Director of Nursing for Specialist Services has been appointed Interim Director of Quality & Nursing for the next 12 months and she will continue this work with the senior nurse leadership team. There s much more about our amazing people and other great work that s going on in this issue of Trust Talk. What have your Governors been doing? AUGUST 2016 Trust Talk Update from Jane Smith Nominations for the Governors Council Election have now closed so good luck to everyone who applied. I recently had the opportunity to talk to BBC Radio Cumbria to explain the work of the Trust and encourage members to come and join our hearty group of governors. Being a governor means we have a direct link to the Board and to the Non-Executive Directors and that we can feedback what keeps staff awake at night and what they re most proud of. We visit a number of services each month to meet teams and gather this feedback and have made some real changes as a result, such as improvements to patients meals and faster access to records. With several transformational programmes happening there has never been a more important time to work with our communities to understand their needs. We are always open to hearing your views through a phone call or email so please get in touch. The scale of change appears great and it is only with your ideas that we can make it work. Trust Talk AUGUST 2016 ouramazingpeople Cumbrian Nurses presented with Queen s Nurse Awards It was only possible thanks to an amazing team and the outstanding nurses who I am fortunate enough to work with every day. Salli Pilcher, Associate Director of Nursing Phil Hunter, Linda Graham, Salli Pilcher & Helen Boit Five nurses from the Trust were awarded the prestigious title of Queen s Nurse at a ceremony in London in May. Phil Hunter, Jane Dickinson, Helen Boit, Linda Graham and Salli Pilcher all received the award which recognises nurses who want to develop their professional skills and promote the highest standards of patient care. Salli was also presented with the Queen Mother s Award for Outstanding Service due to her exceptional efforts during the recent Cumbrian floods. Carlisle Memory Matters team short-listed for award Virtual clinics have improved both person centred care and also reduced waiting times for diagnosis. David Storm, Senior Clinical Services Manager The Memory Matters team in Carlisle were short-listed in the Dementia Care Category at the Patient Safety Awards in July where they were highly commended for their innovative work to support people with early memory needs. This has received great feedback from patients, their families and GPs using the service. Carlisle Memory Matters Team Foot care in Calais Working in the camp has been difficult, but it s also been incredibly rewarding. Ben Lumley, a CPFT podiatrist, has joined four other podiatrists from across the UK to provide voluntary care for refugees in Calais as part of the Foot Project. The team work closely with other health professionals, using a caravan as a makeshift health centre, and have treated conditions such as trench foot, severe cuts and stress fractures. These people have travelled thousands of miles to reach the camp, often with ill-fitting footwear or no footwear at all, and that puts enormous strain on their feet. We ve worked with people from lots of different countries with stories that are difficult to imagine. So far this year the Foot Project has had three two-day trips, with more planned. They treat around 60 people on each visit, and Ben has fundraised locally to buy essential supplies such as shoes, socks, dressings and medical equipment. 4

Amanda Hulse, School Nurse Sue Black, HV in Wigton and CPHVA Rep for Cumbria, Amanda Hulse, Helen Westwood Cumbrian Nurse Amanda Hulse has won the School Nurse of the Year Award from the Community Practitioners and Health Visitors Association (CPHVA), while colleague Helen Westwood was a finalist in the Health Visitor of the Year category. Amanda, based at Flatt Walks Health Centre in Whitehaven, was presented with the award at a ceremony that honours the exceptional work of healthcare professionals across the UK. Amanda gave thanks to her colleagues, especially Debbie McDowell, Helen Westwood and Fiona Graham, for being fabulous and encouraging her when things get tough. Choose Cumbria wins global media award I hope that Choose Cumbria will inspire people to come and live, work and learn here. I know from personal experience and hearing from staff that moving to Cumbria has been a great choice. The campaign run by CN Media Group Ltd triumphed over entries from Brazil and Canada to scoop the Best Launch of a Brand or Product to Create an Audience Segment award. Choose Cumbria has attracted support from more than 20 partners, including the NHS. The award provides a great opportunity to reach out to even more people from all over the world and showcase the exciting career and lifestyle opportunities in Cumbria. Find out more at www.choosecumbria.co.uk Carlisle dental student named best in UK James McParlane, 25, outshone more than 300 students to win the grand final of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh s Dental Skills competition. It followed a gruelling set of tests designed to push the finalists skills to the limit and has earned James a trip to Dentsply in Switzerland to see the latest in preventative and restorative dentistry education. James is a third year student at the University of Central Lancashire and has been carrying out the majority of his training with the Trust. We hope through these relationships we will be able to encourage more nurses from the continent to Cumbria once they have qualified. Ann Taylor, Ward Manager Ruth Gibson, Assistant Practitioner Ann-Kathrin Gobien, Hazel Fawcett, HCA Penrith Community Hospital recently welcomed three German nursing students as part of a joint learning programme, English for Nurses. Hannah Von Prodzinski, Julius Jahner and Ann-Kathrin Gobien worked with a wide variety of people including physiotherapists, occupational therapists, doctors, nurses and nurse practitioners to see how each professional works, and understand their role in the patient care journey. The six week placements have been a huge success, so much so that the German tutors are already looking to place several more students across the Trust. Ann Taylor and Hannah Von Prondzinski Talking about Dementia with the Memory Matters Team We want to bring normality to family members when talking about dementia. Victoria Irving, Carlisle Memory Matters Team Staff from across the Trust used their creativity to get the county talking about dementia as part of Dementia Awareness Week. In Allerdale, the Memory and Later Life Service encouraged people to create new memories through Geocaching, a global outdoor treasure hunt while staff at Garbon House challenged themselves by Carlisle Memory Matters Team learning to knit twiddlemitts - knitted bands which reduce agitation and provide stimulation for patients with dementia. In Carlisle it was an old fashioned bus and a bake off that the Memory Matters Team used to start conversations, as well as dressing up in 1950 s style clothing and performing the memory bus in the city centre. The Penrith support group, ran in partnership with the Alzheimer s Society, held a lively open day to showcase the service they provide. 6
sharedknowhow AUGUST 2016 Trust Talk Festival of Learning Our staff have developed skills and competencies that are essential to us delivering high quality, safe and compassionate care to our patients. Salli Pilcher, Associate Director of Nursing Almost sixty people from the Trust got together at the Vocational Awards 2016 to celebrate their learning. During the ceremony, held at Rheged, NHS Staff were recognised for their achievements: 24 Care Certificates, 27 Apprenticeships and several Diplomas were handed out in a variety of subject areas. The awards ceremony was part of the Festival of Learning (previously Adult Learners Week), a national celebration of lifelong learning. Support for National Breastfeeding Celebration Week The week was a great opportunity for mothers, breastfeeding supporters and health professionals to come together and share what works well to support breastfeeding in local communities. Fiona Sim, Breastfeeding Health Visitor Fiona Sim and Diane Clark, Specialist Breastfeeding Health Visitors, launched breastfeeding training to staff as part of the National Breastfeeding Celebration Week. The training, based upon UNICEF s Baby Friendly Initiative, aims to improve breastfeeding rates in the county. A celebration picnic, held jointly with Penrith Breastfeeding peer support group, saw mums and experts join together to share stories, support and advice. A fundraising event was also organised to support breastfeeding in Sierra Leone with guest speaker Kate Cummings, Community Midwife from North Cumbria University Hospitals NHS Trust. Kate volunteers each year in a maternity unit in Sierra Leone and shares her expertise to achieve the best health outcomes for babies. New computer-based therapy for adults with learning disabilities Eulyth McMorrow, Specialist Speech and Language Therapist, has been trialling a new computer-based therapy programme for adults with learning disabilities. The programme, REACT2, has previously been used for the rehabilitation of adults who have suffered a stroke or head injury. Eulyth saw the potential for the programme in engaging her service users. The programme has been a huge success, with users becoming actively engaged and therapists can now monitor progress remotely and update any therapeutic tasks as necessary. Families of service users have been impressed with the effectiveness of the therapy and appreciate the more focussed support plans as a result. Trust Talk AUGUST 2016 OTopics Community Hospitals Contingency plans have been implemented across some of our inpatient units to safely manage care. Our Community Hospitals are experiencing unprecedented staffing shortages due to challenges with recruitment, sickness and annual leave. The plans offer a temporary solution to the immediate staffing challenges and do not affect the long term future of these services. We have had some success in recruitment but continue to appeal to our partners and the community to help spread the word about current vacancies. Roles in our community hospitals offer nurses an exciting and rewarding opportunity to work right at the heart of their community. Updates can be found on the news section of our website along with links to our current vacancies. We are optimistic about finding solutions to these challenges and will return to business as usual as soon as it is safe to do so. Care Quality Commission Earlier this year the Care Quality Commission published their findings from last year s inspection of our services. The report included a number of recommendations and actions for the Trust to improve services, and throughout the year we have been making progress in many areas. We have successfully increased the number of children and young people being seen within the recommended time frame from referral to treatment with 96.8% now seen within the target time (as of 1st August). We have also developed a new training program to improve staff awareness of the Mental Capacity Act and introduced a series of workshops which look at reducing the use of restraint. hottopics AUGUST 2016 Trust Talk Success Regime - latest update The Cumbria Success Regime and its health community partners have extended the period of pre-consultation engagement to further develop ideas for the future of healthcare in West, North and East Cumbria. Formal public consultation is now expected to begin in September. In addition to this, a stakeholder update has now been published on the Success Regime Website. A number of people including some of our local MPs and council leaders have told us they would like a little more time to better understand some aspects of our emerging thinking such as the development of Integrated Care Communities. I want to make it clear that we are listening and the proof is the fact that we have decided not to go straight into consultation as originally planned but to allow a few extra weeks for discussions with key stakeholders. Sir Neil McKay, Chair of the programme board for the West, North and East Cumbria Success Regime Everyone is encouraged to continue giving their feedback through the Success Regime s website: www.successregimecumbria.nhs.uk/contact Kentmere Unit to stay open The Trust has undertaken a full assessment of the urgency of the quality and safety concerns on Kentmere Unit. As a result of these findings, the Board of Directors announced in July that the mental health inpatient unit, at Westmorland General Hospital, will remain open in the short term. Claire Molloy, Chief Executive, said: Whist we acknowledge that Kentmere does not meet the standards of modern mental health inpatient care, we are satisfied that the actions taken over the past few months have mitigated the risks on a short term basis. We have reviewed the risk of putting in place an alternative service and have concluded that the risk of closing the ward temporarily is greater than keeping it open. The feedback from service users, carers, staff, the local MP, our partners and the local community has provided valuable insights and contributed to the decision to keep the ward open. The Trust maintains its position that the environment does not meet the standards that we want for service users in Cumbria, and the actions that we have taken so far do not address the safety issues, access to outside space or same sex accommodation requirements on a sustainable, long term basis. We will feed our position into a review of the broader adult mental health inpatient service model which will be considered in a formal consultation led by NHS Cumbria Clinical Commissioning Group later this year. This will ensure that we are in a better position to provide the services we are commissioned for and the best possible care for our service users now and in the future. 9
Trust Talk AUGUST 2016 ourpartnerships Keswick community raises funds to get patients moving The generous community rallied round to raise the money for which the Friends of Mary Hewetson Hospital are very grateful. Mike Bulman, Honoury Treasurer, Keswick League of Friends New gym equipment bought with funds raised by the Friends of Mary Hewetson Hospital means that physiotherapists can now add fun to their sessions with patients. Over 3,000 was donated to purchase equipment such as a treadmill, medicine balls, hand weights and exercise mats after realising that the space wasn t being used to its full potential. The modern equipment is now used by patients of all ages for a variety of groups such as shoulder rehabilitation, 1:1 daily rehabilitation, musculoskeletal outpatient rehabilitation and by inpatients from the wards. Dedicated Mental Health Nurse role developed at FGH This is a very positive step in improving access to crisis care. We can now provide people with better access to mental health support, quickly, and when and where they need it the most. Dr Stuart Beatson, Associate Medical Director Patients that require mental health support when in Furness General Hospital (FGH) can now benefit from dedicated mental health liaison nurses on site, thanks to a partnership between our Trust and the University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust. There are now four mental health liaison nurses dedicated to FGH. The role covers two main areas: 1. Assessment of anyone who presents having self-harmed within two hours, with an option to have 72 hour or short term support. 2. ourpartnerships New text messaging support for students AUGUST 2016 Trust Talk #textntalk I think it s a fantastic way for young people to finally come forward with personal issues and problems and talk about them without feeling embarrassed. 8063 Beth Bewsher, student at West Lakes Academy 5458 An exciting new text messaging service for 11-19 year olds has launched in Cumbria. ChatHealth allows secondary school students to confidentially text a school nurse with any health related issues such as sexual health, smoking, bullying or mental health. Children from West Lakes Academy, Egremont have been involved in the service development and their ideas have influenced how the service was launched. ChatHealth will be promoted in schools across Cumbria over the coming months. It is available during school holiday as well as term time. CLIC shortlisted for national award The Cumbria Learning and Improvement Collaborative (CLIC) is a shared initiative to drive positive change in health and social care. For the past year it has delivered clinical skills training to more than 900 registered nurses across Cumbria with huge success. The Clinical Skills programme is highly valued by staff and has benefited patients across the county. As a result, it has now been nominated for two national awards. The programme was one of the finalists in the Training and Development category for the HSJ Value in Healthcare Awards which recognise outstanding efficiency and improvement. It was also highly commended at the Bright Ideas in Health Awards 2016 and praised by NHS England Medical Director Sir Bruce Keogh. All sessions were led by experts and the teaching was superb. The training was research based, up to date and prepared staff to carry out evidence based practice making a real difference to patients. Phil Hunter, District Nurse, speaking about his training. Suicide awareness: Everyone can help 74 Responsibility for people with suicidal thoughts is often seen to lie with specialist mental health services however, early intervention from a colleague, friend or health care worker can make a real difference to saving lives. Through our suicide prevention project we aim to support everyone in the Trust to feel confident in their role in suicide prevention by raising awareness and helping to develop the skills needed to make a difference. The project aims to support our frontline staff in implementing the best evidence in suicide prevention, learning from the good practice that exists across the Trust and working together to learn, improve and provide compassionate care to all those touched by suicide. Trust Talk AUGUST 2016 heartofthecommunity Visionary new telehealth link in Millom Innovative technological developments are currently being piloted within Millom as part of Better Care Together and the Millom Alliance. The aim is to reduce the number of unnecessary patient journeys to the nearest Accident and Emergency Department at Furness General Hospital. Telehealth involves a triage room in Waterloo House GP Surgery in Millom which is equipped with a High Definition camera and monitor. There is a similar facility at the Emergency Department in Furness to allow two way consultations to take place. Telehealth is going to benefit the patients of Millom massively; they may not have to make the long journey to see a specialist anymore. Rebecca Fairclough, Electronic Patient Record Advisor, Better Care Together Mental Health Practitioner swaps books for boots I was inspired by the resourcefulness and determination of those who have served to move forward into civilian life. Nicky Lavery, First Step Practitioner 12 Before developing the First Step service to help military veterans through talking therapies, Nicky Lavery, Mental Health Practitioner, spent four days in their shoes. Future for Heroes run a free four day course at Brathay Hall in Ambleside which follows the principles learn from the past, live in the present, and plan for the future, through team building outdoor activities and classroom based exercises. Nicky attended the course to gain insight into how military veterans who access our First Step service could benefit from taking part.
heartofthecommunity AUGUST 2016 Trust Talk Welcoming four new consultants The Specialist Care Group is excited to welcome four new consultants to their teams. Matt Phillips has joined the Sexual Health Team, Amy Gadoud the Palliative Care Team, Muhammad Asam the Diabetes team and Steven Wilkinson has joined the Learning Disabilities team. Now these vacancies are filled, patients will have improved access to services and waiting times will be reduced. I m delighted to have joined the Sexual Health Team. The Trust s values all have a resonance with my own and I particularly like spirit that feeling of drive and doing things like you mean it! To kick start this, staff from the Trust recently met with members of local communities, voluntary organisations and service users at an event called Come Together. It was also an opportunity to showcase work that s already underway. Delegates considered what great collaboration looks like and what steps and values are needed to achieve it. From the discussions a number of actions were agreed together, marking the first step towards closer working. We re always looking for more examples so if that sounds like one of your colleagues let us know! The Carlisle COPD team would like to thank Catherine Bell and Linda Frame (COPD Nurses) who have worked tirelessly for over 10 years, developing and adapting to an ever changing service. Their commitment to their roles is evident on a daily basis, demonstrating kindness and a spirit with both patients and colleagues. The past few months have been challenging with the Carlisle floods and staff shortages. Both Catherine and Linda have embraced the challenge and continued to show dedication to the team. I have recently started with the Quality Safety and Safeguarding Team and I have been gladdened by the warm, kind and supportive approach I have received from members of the team and other care groups. In the current climate many of us work under immense pressure to deliver safe and effective services, but there remains a core of friendship and kindness and I have felt this since joining. I would like to say thank you, because when you are new to any post, being welcomed makes such a difference and I have really appreciated this. staf fupdate AUGUST 2016 Trust Talk Celebrating Nursing Conference, Rheged Nurses from across the Trust came together to celebrate all that s great in nursing and mark the launch of a new national nursing framework. The framework sets out 10 commitments and encourages a culture of learning and openness. This has been a big focus for the Trust and the event celebrated this continuous learning. It provided a chance to reflect on the one goal that all nursing and health care staff are committed to - providing the best quality care for our patients. We all need to remember why we do what we do. Today was all about being able to say I m proud to be a nurse. I know I make a difference.
