Fall is my favorite time of year no allergies, cool mornings and warm afternoons. Football (for those who watch) and for me enjoying my kids fall soccer season. We have one more meeting left for 2016 and I hope it will be a well attended one. It has been a great year of meetings for us and we will have some great sites lined up for 2017. Our meeting last month was held at Stadler Nursery in Laytonsville. Thank you to Eric Wenger for having everyone over for a pre-meeting get together. Our hosts were Lisa and David Stadler. David along with Chuck Captain held an open panel discussion about the shortage of plants in the industry. Thank you to Stadler for also sponsoring the meeting and to Eric, Kip and Doug for 1 Our 4th quarter Board meeting was held October 11th at the Chevy Chase Club. I am driving out to Louisville this Wednesday to attend the GIE. This will be my first time attending and am looking forward to meeting PGMS members from all over the country. I will have an update from it at our November meeting. The next PGMS DC Branch Meeting will be on Thursday, November 3rd at Georgetown University. Our program will be from Rain Bird Irrigation on the new cloud based irrigation system recently installed on the campus. I look forward to seeing everyone on November 3rd at Georgetown University for our last meeting in 2016. I hope we will have a great turnout for this meeting.
Thank you sponsors (those listed here and throughout the newsletter!) 2

Moving Maryland Forward Grant Latino's comprise the bulk of the staff for many landscape and horticulture businesses. Their work ethic is phenomenal but they lack the education to move upward into managerial roles. The Office of Diversity and Inclusion at the University of Maryland is aware of problems like this and sponsors a grant opportunity annually called Moving Maryland Forward with the goal of educating minorities. The Institute of Applied Agriculture (IAA) received one of these grants entitled "Opening Doors to Successful Careers for Latino Professionals." The DC Branch of PGMS, thanks to Chris Erb, was a sponsoring organization in the application. The IAA's plan is for a one day workshop on campus on January 11, 2017. Attendees will get a tour of facilities, take a practice lab practical test alongside our student teams preparing for competitions at the STMA and GCSAA conferences, and hear from two successful Latino graduates from the IAA. If they remain interested, the grant will fund their fees to take a spring semester online class in Pesticide Use & Safety, a $400 value. This class is one of three necessary to meet the education requirements for pesticide licensing. Hopefully, this exposure to higher education will lead to their continued education and success in the green industries. Please consider passing this information along to any of your staff members who have shown the initiative to succeed but lack the necessary education. Don't hesitate to contact Kenneth Ingram at the IAA for more information at 301-405-0499 or kingram@umd.edu. 6
