USD 273 - Beloit currently has a seamless STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) program that runs from grades kindergarten through twelfth. Elementary students work on robotics, wind power, solar power, create drones, and basic engineering. This program filters into our Beloit Jr/Sr High School, where these students are taking the skills learned in elementary classes and expanding on robotics, drones, 3D printing, and other technologies. The students are ready for the next step in technology: mixing virtual reality into our STEM program. The HoloLens, created by Microsoft, will allow our students to do just that. Microsoft HoloLens is made up of specialized components that together enable holographic computing. It is a Windows 10 computer that works through a lens that you wear with headgear. The optical system, which looks like a set of goggles, works in "lock-step" (moving around) with advanced sensors. The HPU makes light work of processing a large amount of data per second. It is not a typical set of virtual reality goggles. It's a complete virtual reality setting where students can develop their own ideas and make those ideas into virtual reality facts. All those components and more enable you to move freely and interact with holograms. The HoloLens will actually turn science fiction into fact. Students will be able to do dissections in 3D and even 4D on holograms. For example, students can see a human heart functioning, turn it with their hands, and see the back side of the heart and actually go through the parts of the heart as they work with it. The HoloLens is not limited to just science. Students can take lifelike tours of Rome as it existed 200 years ago. In our construction classes, students will have the ability to build large, detailed structures, but these structures will be virtual holograms. Students and teachers will have unlimited resources in what they can teach and what they can design with this equipment. Printed On: 21 November 2017 Requests of more than $5,000 3
Jeff Travis Grant Request Description* If funded, how will you specifically use the Dane G. Hansen funds? The school district will purchase ten HoloLens with the Dane G. Hansen funds. We are working on getting a set of HoloLens that an entire classroom of students can work with at one time. The district plans to match the $30,000 grant with another $15,000. This will allow us to have fifteen HoloLens for our students and teachers to work with at one time. This is just a starting point. These fifteen HoloLens will start at the Beloit Jr/Sr High School. The school district will continue to look for more resources to bring the HoloLens into the Beloit Elementary School as well. Project Objectives* What do you hope to achieve and how will it benefit the people of Northwest Kansas? Microsoft has allowed USD 273 - Beloit Schools to purchase two of the HoloLens already. Microsoft has stated that the Beloit school district is the only school in the Midwest to currently have the HoloLens technology in the K-12 setting. The school district is looking to be a Microsoft partner and developer with this technology. Currently one HoloLens is at the Beloit Elementary School and one HoloLens is at the Beloit Jr/Sr High School. The one at the elementary is the only one in the world at an elementary school at this time that Microsoft knows about. Beloit school students will be developing techniques on how this technology is used in classrooms across the United States and the world. USD 273 Beloit has made our STEM programs a priority. Many other districts have asked questions about what we are doing with STEM and how we are expanding it. The Board of Education feels that it is a must for our students to have this experience. Our elementary STEM program is currently one of a few in the state of Kansas. The district is helping lead the state with our K-12 STEM program, but we want our program to continue to lead the state and the world. The project objective is for USD 273 Beloit students to be the leaders in STEM and be a part of Microsoft's development team with this technology. The HoloLens will allow for this to happen. It will give our students the unlimited resources to develop their thoughts and practices into a reality that has not been achieved anywhere at this point. The HoloLens puts a virtual resource in math, science, music, geography, agriculture, and other classes taught in K-12 education and expands on how these courses will be taught. Individualized learning will never be slowed down as visual learning expands beyond belief. Virtual reality is something that is hard to imagine, and until you can actually experience it in this capacity, it's hard to understand. This equipment will allow our students to be mobile with their learning and not be stuck at a desk as they work on a computer. "People, not devices, are mobile. We are ready for technology to move beyond desks, beyond screens and pixels, and beyond today's digital borders." This quote from Alex Kipman, a software developer, sums it up. This concept is our focus and the HoloLens technology will allow this to happen. This kind of cutting-edge technology will allow our students to learn how to use this device in a way that they can work from North Central Kansas in their classrooms discovering 3D experiences, investigate more deeply, and learn by doing. USD #273 students will lead the way with this technology as other schools begin to see what kind of impact it will have. They will develop ideas and techniques in the use the HoloLens and provide this information to other districts around the area, state, and nation, allowing them to be the leaders of this type of technology, and show the practical impact it has for educational purposes. As North Central Kansans, we're always concerned with how we can encourage our students to return to their rural hometowns as adults. Allowing our students to have educational experiences around the world from their school in Beloit will demonstrate the concept that their future could involve living in rural Kansas and working here or elsewhere using a similar technological/virtual concept. Jeff Travis Timetable for the Project* When is the project projected to begin and end? For ongoing projects, when will the Dane G. Hansen funds be utilized? The project is in its beginning stages right now with the first two devices. The Dane G. Hansen funds will be utilized as soon as they arrive. The district will purchase ten more devices with the Hansen funds and purchase five more with district funds. This will not be the end of the project, though. The district will continue to look for more resources to broaden the use to a second classroom of HoloLens at the Beloit Jr/Sr High and continue to work on getting more into the Beloit Elementary as well. Apps for the HoloLens will also be purchased as new ideas and applications are developed. Additional Support Describe additional sources of support (if any) that have been secured or that will be pursued for this project. The school district will use $15,000 of district resources for this project. We will also look for other grant sources to purchase a second classroom of HoloLens, and then continue to push forward to get a classroom of HoloLens at the elementary school. The application for this grant is being written through the so that the gifts and grants will be held in this account. The will also help in the future to grow and maintain this technology project. USD 273 - Beloit and the work hand in hand in providing resources for the students, faculty, and staff. Evaluation* How will you evaluate the success of the project/program? Be specific. (If funded, this will be helpful when completing the final grant report.) We will submit our findings to Microsoft as a partner developer with the HoloLens. The district will have student demonstrations at upcoming Board of Education meetings, and participate in statewide and national conventions where students will help lead in these conversations and developments. Our students and faculty of USD #273 have the opportunity to interact with Microsoft in the development of the HoloLens as it will be used in the K-12 setting around the country. The school district will also be working with Washburn Technical College from Topeka, KS as a partner in the HoloLens technology in the development of how the HoloLens will be used in the training of students in the medical field. With the assistance of Microsoft and Washburn Tech College, we will be able to use the findings from the use of the HoloLens and incorporate new and exciting ways of using the device. With this device being in its infancy, the uses are endless. Sustainability* How will the project/program be sustained in the future? (For capital projects, how will you maintain or operate the item or facility?) With your support, the support from the USD #273 Board of Education, and support from the community, we will be able to purchase more HoloLens goggles and applications for future use. We will also be able to Printed On: 21 November 2017 Requests of more than $5,000 5
Jeff Travis upgrade to newer and better HoloLens as they become available when Microsoft upgrades their technology in the future. The USD 273 School Board plans to set aside dollars to continue on the upgrade process of the HoloLens. Washburn Technical College and Microsoft both plan on the partnership in the development piece of the HoloLens to continue as well. Microsoft will continue to work with USD 273 - Beloit to keep costs down to a minimum as this partnership is beneficial to both entities.
