Overview of the assessment 1. What is this item of evidence? This item of evidence includes the diversity goals and objectives of the PEU approved by the Professional Education Council on February 6, 2013. It also includes the campus-wide diversity recruitment plan. 2. How was the quality of the evidence determined or assured? The PEU recruitment plan was developed and approved by faculty and staff on the PEU Professional Education Council. The language used in the document was influenced by NCATE standards. 3. What criteria of success have been established on the measure, and how? The goals and objectives of the recruitment outline its criteria of success. In order for the recruitment plan to be successful, the PEU must increase or maintain its faculty and candidate diversity, and PEU members must participate in diversity initiatives that promote cultural competence. 4. What does the reported evidence mean? This evidence includes diversity goals, objectives, and strategies. The goals and objectives indicate the PEU s commitment to increase diversity and promote cultural competence. Multiple strategies were developed to meet each objective and goal. 5. How is the evidence used to support improvement? This evidence supports improvement by outlining the PEU s goals and strategies to increase diversity and promote cultural competence. The strategies outlined in this evidence are within the PEU s capability to execute. The Documentation of diversity recruitment evidence includes information on the initiatives that have been implemented per this recruitment plan.

PEU Diversity Plan Goal The Professional Education Council (PEC) will affirm the value of diversity through good-faith efforts to increase or maintain faculty diversity. Objective 1. Each program in the PEU will include faculty (priority full-time) representing at least two different ethnic or racial groups. Strategies 1. Affirmative Action procedures will be followed in hiring full-time and part-time faculty. 2. The number of diverse full-time faculty applicants, applicants interviewed, applicants hired, and reasons an applicant from an underrepresented group rejects an offer will be documented and reviewed. 3. Faculty and/or administration from the certification preparation programs will be encouraged to attend the Compact for Diversity Conference. Goal The Professional Education Unit (PEU) will engage in good-faith efforts to increase or maintain a pool of candidates, both male and female, from diverse socioeconomic and ethnic/racial groups. Objective 1. The PEC will develop strategies to increase the number of teacher, school counselor, and building leader candidates from diverse backgrounds. Strategies: 1. In collaboration with The College at Brockport s Undergraduate Admissions Office, Office of Graduate Studies, and the PEU Advisory Board, the PEC will document and track good-faith recruitment efforts and strategies to increase the number of diverse teacher, school counselor, and building leader candidates from traditional and nontraditional populations (e. g. high schools, community colleges, paraprofessionals, those with other degrees). 2. In collaboration with The College at Brockport s Student Retention Office and Teacher Opportunity Corps Program (TOC), the PEC will develop strategies to retain diverse teacher, school counselor, and building leader candidates.

3. In conjunction with the Office of Institutional Advancement, the PEC will encourage PEU faculty and alumni to contribute to designated scholarships. 4. The PEC will create and/or identify opportunities to invite youth from diverse backgrounds to campus to participate in programs geared towards recruitment of future teacher, school counselor, and district and building leader candidates. 5. The PEC will increase meaningful opportunities for candidates to interact with peers from diverse backgrounds on and off campus (e.g. clubs, programs with area colleges, partnerships with urban/rural school districts, promoting study-abroad programs). 6. Current partnerships with the Rochester City School District (RCSD) will be expanded, and new partnerships developed to increase recruitment of candidates from diverse backgrounds. Goal Faculty, staff, and candidates of the Professional Education Unit (PEU) will engage in diversity education, training, and initiatives to promote cultural competence. Objectives 1. PEU faculty and staff will attend at least 4 intellectual activities per year (2 per semester) that promote conversations about diversity issues, respect and tolerance for cultural differences. 2. PEU candidates will attend at least 4 intellectual activities per year (2 per semester) that promote conversations about diversity issues, respect and tolerance for cultural differences. Strategies 1. In collaboration with the Assistant Provost for Diversity, the PEC will coordinate a breakout session related to diversity issues in education at the college-wide Annual Diversity Conference. 2. PEU faculty, staff and candidates will be encouraged to attend diversity events such as the College at Brockport s Annual Diversity Conference and the Martin Luther King Lecture. 3. In collaboration with the Assistant Provost for Diversity, the PEC will invite guest speakers to candidate classes and/or unit-wide presentations. 4. PEU faculty will attend and/or present on topics related to diversity and cultural competence at the Center for Excellence in Teaching (CELT).
