Designed by local Casper architects Garbutt, Weidner and Sweeny, and built between 1924 and 1927, NCHS remains in active use as a high school. Subsequent additions included an indoor pool, built in 1929; gymnasium, built in 1931; classrooms and band room, built in 1957; vocation technology classrooms, built in 1959; vocational education building, built in 1974; classroom and cafeteria building, built in 1977; and library addition, built in 1995. NCHS was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1994. During the tour we will observe such character defining features as the traditionally proportioned and unique terra cotta and brick detailing on the exterior, the south lawn distinguishing this landmark structure within an established residential neighborhood, the beautiful auditorium and lobby, a variety of classrooms and offices, the indoor swimming pool, and gymnasium. We will also observe the numerous more contemporary additions and talk about the role they play within the historic fabric of the original structure. Leading a strong vision to the future, the Natrona County School District and the Wyoming School Facilities Commission is planning a significant renovation and addition for NCHS. We will observe several challenges and opportunities that the existing conditions of NCHS present to the goals of creating a successful 21st century learning environment. We will end our tour in the auditorium for the Preserve Wyoming Closing Plenary.
