#TUG season outlook 3

2016 Temple Gymnastics 2016 SEASON OUTLOOK Under the direction of first-year head coach Umme Salim-Beasley, Temple women s gymnastics is set to begin a new era for the program in 2016. The Owls have welcomed a brand new coaching staff, new practice facility and seven newcomers following their 2015 season. Last year saw a season high score of 192.15 and an ECAC Championship fifth place finish. With the loss of eight letterwinners, the Owls are entering 2016 with many changes. I think the biggest thing as a coaching staff that we wanted to set forth from the very beginning is staying positive and being consistent in what we re capable of doing, said Salim-Beasley. Our focus is doing clean routines with minimal deductions to the best of our ability. Salim-Beasley is joined by new assistant coach Michael Rosso and first-year graduate assistant coach Anastasia Halbig for her first season. Both Rosso and Halbig hail from Rutgers University with Halbig being a four-year member of the women s gymnastics team and Rosso working as a student assistant coach for two years. The coaching staff is excited to face a highcaliber schedule that includes two home meets and matchups with both conference and non-conference opponents. The Owls first home meet is the annual Ken Anderson Memorial Invitational on Feb. 6 and will feature 2015 ECAC champions, William and Mary, as well as West Chester University, Ursinus College and Southern Connecticut University. #WETHET Junior Briana Odom Away from home, the Owls will be traveling to schools across the map. Beginning at Central Michigan, January will feature matchups at Kent State University, William and Mary, George Washington University, University of Pittsburgh, and West Chester University. I n February, the IGI Chicago Style meet in Chicago, Ill. will be a quad meet that includes Northern Illinois University, Central Michigan and the University of Alaska. Also featured in the month of February are two more quad meets before March begins with the second home meet featuring Penn and Bridgeport on the 5th. The team will close out the regular season at Brown University on March 12 before competing at the ECAC Championships on March 19. Following the conference championships, the Owls look to make an appearance at the NCAA Regional Championships. If we keep our focus on our consistency and being aggressive with our routines, I think we have strong potential to be competitive with any team we compete against, said Salim- Beasley. Bars is an event that we are going to really stand out in this year. We have the depth and the originality and that event is going to match up with any school we see this season. Working through a new preseason training regimen in a new practice facility in the fall, the Owls capped off their preparations with two mock meets. In the second intrasquad meet, the team ended the day with an overall score of 190.3 and was highlighted by the team s four all-around contenders. Sophomore Kerry Arone led the pack with a total allaround tally of 38.35. Briana Odom, Sahara Gipson and India Anderson also competed on all four events. We have a lot of depth when it comes to allaround, said Salim-Beasley. We have a lot of girls who have the potential to compete on four events and it s unusual to see that on college teams. We have four or five and it is really nice that we can say that we have girls we can switch from event to event that can add depth at any point in time. With a large number of gymnasts showing the ability to perform on all four events, Salim- Beasley believes the depth of the team on each event will help the team reach its goals successfully. The work ethic in the gym is so strong with all of them, said Salim-Beasley. We don t have one person who is not putting their best effort forward each day which is what is so great about this team. They push each other and know what the expectations are. Senior Reagan Oliveri will return to competition this year after taking a red-shirt in 2015 due to injury. In her last competitive season, Oliveri was named team MVP and earned first team USAG All-American honors on beam. 4 Senior Reagan Oliveri Joining Oliveri in their final seasons will be Michaela Lapent, Danielle Vahala and Hannah Popper, all of whom saw personal-bests on their respective events in 2015. Lapent, who competed on all four events earned NACGC Scholastic All-American honors for her academic and athletic performance last season. Junior Victoria Reggiani and sophomore Gina Tucker are two more key returners who posted strong performances in 2015. Reggiani saw action on three events, posting her strongest performances on bars and vault where she consistently scored above 9.6. Tucker specialized in beam and vault as a freshman where she saw line up spots in seven total meets. Sophomores Kayla Kennedy and Gianna Gambuti missed the 2015 season with injuries, but have come back to exhibition routines at both mock meets this fall. Gambuti logged the highest beam score of the Owls at the second intrasquad with a solid score of 9.675. The Owls are welcoming two transfers for the 2016 season. Gipson and Alexa Phillip have joined the team and look to make an impact on all four events. Gipson and Phillip are joined by five true freshman who bring impressive resumes from their JO careers. It is going to be an exciting season, said Salim-Beasley. The team is ready to be competitive and they really want to do well. They believe that they can do well this year.

2016 Temple Gymnastics HEAD COACH Umme Salim-Beasley First Season WEST VIRGINIA 98 U m m e Salim-Beasley (ooo-me) was hired as Temple's head women's gymnastics coach in late April, 2015. Salim-Beasley had spent the previous four seasons as an assistant coach at Rutgers University, and was named the East Atlantic Gymnastics League (EAGL) Assistant Coach of the Year in 2014. In her four years at Rutgers, Salim- Beasley served as the recruiting coordinator for the Scarlet Knights and worked with the uneven bars, among other day-to-day duties for the program. Salim-Beasley helped Rutgers to a NCAA Regional berth in 2014 and its best EAGL finish in school history. Uneven bars were a big part of the success, as four gymnasts earned all-conference in the event. In addition, Salim-Beasley guided one of her student-athletes, Alexis Gunzelman, to the top regional qualifying score (RQS) in the conference on bars (9.845) on the way to the first NCAA National all-around appearance by a Scarlet Knight in program history. Gunzelman posted a 9.800 at the national meet, her eighth consecutive meet with at least that score to end the season. As recruiting coordinator, Salim- Beasley expanded the Scarlet Knights' base nationally to attract top talent from outside the area. Traditionally recruiting in New Jersey and the surrounding states, the Scarlet Knights were able to pull in gymnasts from Florida, South Carolina, Arizona and Massachusetts. Salim-Beasley brought impressive credentials to Rutgers, having competed collegiately at West Virginia University from 1995 to 1998. A native of Pasadena, Md., she was a two-time national qualifier at Hill's Gymnastic Training Center in Gaithersburg, Md., before earning a full scholarship to WVU. Salim-Beasley was named Atlantic 10 Rookie of the Year as a freshman at West Virginia, and earned spots on the All-EAGL First Team in all-around, bars and beam her sophomore and junior seasons. She finished off her career by being named the EAGL Gymnast of the Year and Most Outstanding Senior Gymnast in her final season in Morgantown in addition to winning the EAGL all-around, bar and beam titles that year. Her accomplishments also ranked her as the fifth-best gymnast in the country and as a finalist for the AAI Award in 1998. After graduating from West Virginia with a degree in early childhood education, Salim-Beasley went into coaching, starting as an assistant coach at Penn in 1999. During her one season with the Quakers, the team won the Ivy League Championships in addition to an undefeated regular season, breaking team records in every event. Salim-Beasley returned to Morgantown as a volunteer assistant coach during the 2006-07 season. For three years, she coached the Severna Park High School gymnastics team to two county championships, including an undefeated regular season in her first year. Additionally, she coached two different gymnasts to allaround championships. Salim-Beasley was also a teacher at Eagle Cove School in Pasadena, Md., for four years and is working towards a masters in education from West Virginia University. She is married to former WVU football All-American and NFL veteran, Aaron Beasley, and the couple have three daughters: Amirah (12), Dahlia (9) and Layla (6). #WETHET 6

UNIVERSITY & ATHLETICS STAFF 9

2016 Temple gymnastics University Administration Dr. Neil Theobald was named Temple University s 10th president in August 2012. In partnership with an excellent faculty and talented staff, he leads a university that educates more than 38,000 students, employs 15,000 faculty and staff, and operates one of the nation s leading academic medical centers. Temple has achieved several milestones in Dr. Theobald s early tenure. The university has set both private fundraising and research funding records in each of his first three years. It has also enrolled record numbers of students with the last two freshmen classes being the most academically qualified and diverse entering classes in Temple history. Temple has been nationally recognized by Kiplinger s as one of the best values among public universities. These achievements have been featured on NPR s Morning Edition, The Chronicle of Higher Education, and other major media outlets. Philadelphia Business Journal named Dr. Theobald its Most Admired Education CEO in 2015. Dr. Theobald has laid out six commitments that guide University resource allocation: (1) Address head-on the issue of time-to-degree, which is the primary determinant of student debt at public universities. In his innovative FlyIn4 initiative, students are guaranteed the ability to graduate in four years, keeping their debt to a minimum. (2) Maintain affordability and commit Temple to be at the forefront of quality undergraduate instruction. (3) Share Temple s greatest strengths the expertise, creativity, and energy of its faculty, researchers, and students to address Philadelphia s two perennial problems: indigent health care and P-12 education. (4) Drive the regional economy through Temple s research enterprise. William T. Bergman Vice President and Special Assistant to the President Kevin Clark Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer PRESIDENT NEIL D. THEOBALD 3rd YEAR at TEMPLE Maintain and increase the diversity that the university is known for. One avenue to do so is the Temple Option under which 1,000 freshmen are admitted each year without standardized test scores. (6) Educate innovators across the university so that Temple s future alumni remain flexible and productive in a fast-paced, rapidly changing world. He also has decentralized the university budget to reduce costs and improve efficiency. In addition, Dr. Theobald launched Visualize Temple, a master planning process that seeks to transform the university s central campus. Dr. Theobald started out like many Temple Owls. Born to working-class parents in Peoria, Ill., he planned to enter an electrician s apprenticeship after high school. However, he won an academic scholarship to Trinity (CT) College and became the first person in his family to attend college, earning a B.A. in economics in 1978. After teaching mathematics and coaching high school baseball, he earned a Ph.D. in education finance from Washington in 1988, winning the Jean Flanigan Award from the American Education Finance Association for the outstanding doctoral dissertation. Dr. Theobald joined the faculty of the Washington s College of Education after receiving his Ph.D. He helped create the Danforth administrator training program at the UW that is now in its 27th year of operation. His research focused on decentralizing educational funding and modeling educational labor markets. He received the University Council for Educational Administration s Jack Culbertson Award for the most significant contributions by a junior professor and earned tenure in 1993. Dr. Theobald moved to Indiana University in 1993 to direct the Indiana Education Policy Center, cofunded by the Lilly Endowment and the Indiana General Assembly. His work focused on Indiana s K-12 school funding formula. During his research career, Dr. Theobald published nearly 100 articles, books, and reports on education funding and related fields, which led to more than $7 million in grants and contracts. He was also a 3-time winner of IU s Teaching Excellence Recognition Award. From 2002-07, Dr. Theobald was Senior Vice Provost for Indiana s flagship campus in Bloomington, where he was responsible for the campus budget and directed a $1.1 billion capital campaign. Major accomplishments include adding 120 tenure-track faculty members, increasing the financial aid endowment from less than $150 million to more than $550 million, and increasing the mean SAT score of IU Bloomington s incoming class from 1099 to 1203. From 2007 to 2012, Dr. Theobald was SVP and CFO for IU, where he oversaw a $3.1 billion budget, supervision of HR services for IU s 3,100 faculty and more than 14,000 staff members, and management of the largest student union in the world and one of the five largest student housing systems in the country. During his time as CFO, IU s credit ranking was upgraded to Moody s highest level (Aaa) making IU one of only eight Aaa-rated public universities in America. Dr. Theobald enjoys sports playing intramural softball at Temple each spring and bicycles to/from work whenever possible. Every fall, he and his wife, Sheona Mackenzie, teach a freshmen seminar on organizational change. They have three children: Roddy, a Ph.D. statistician; Kinnear, a physician; and Mattie, a graduate student. They also have two grandchildren, Jimmy and Lochlynn. Karen B. #TUG Temple Athletics On May 26, 2015, Temple University President Neil D. Theobald announced that Dr. Patrick M. Kraft, who served as Temple's Deputy Director of Athletics since 2013, would replace Kevin Clark as Director of Athletics. Earlier that day, the president nominated Clark to the newly created position of Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer. Kraft and Clark served together at Indiana University where Kraft oversaw marketing and ticketing efforts for all of the Hoosiers' programs. His efforts at Indiana helped increase home football attendance to its highest mark in two decades. "Pat's expertise, coupled with his enthusiasm for high quality student athletics, is apparent to anyone who has worked with him," said Clark. "I know he is dedicated to producing a student-athlete experience that is every bit on par with the high quality of a Temple education." "Temple is an extraordinary university and its athletics programs are advancing with tremendous support from our students, faculty, coaches, parents and alumni," said Kraft. "Our athletics programs build greater name recognition for Temple around the region and across the country." Kraft also served as the sport administrator for the Temple football program, which includes personnel, budgeting, student-athlete conduct and welfare, APR planning, game scheduling, academic monitoring, and studentathlete counseling. Prior to coming to Temple, Kraft spent two years as the Executive Senior Associate Athletics Director at Loyola University Chicago. At Loyola, he had direct oversight of all aspects of the department's external operations, including the marketing, ticketing, media relations and fundraising components. Kraft played an integral role in Loyola s move from the Horizon DEPUTY DIRECTOR of ATHLETICS Dr. PATRICK KRAFT 3rd YEAR at TEMPLE League to the Missouri Valley Conference. In his two years at the school he was able to grow the men's basketball season ticket base by 30 percent with an overall increase of 51 percent in ticket revenue. Additionally, he generated an increase of 400 percent in cash sponsorship to the department while also growing the department's annual giving by 75 percent. Not limited to just external operations at Loyola, Kraft was responsible for overseeing the day-to-day management of the department's $12+ million budget. He also served as the sport supervisor for men's and women's basketball and was responsible for handling all of the department's business contracts. At Indiana, Kraft was responsible for the branding and marketing efforts for all of the Hoosiers' programs. He oversaw game production for all of IU's varsity sports and coordinated group, season and single-game ticket sales for football, men's basketball, men's soccer, women's basketball and women's volleyball. In addition, Kraft managed the promotion, marketing, brand enhancement and enforcement of the school's Adidas contract and the Big Ten Network partnership as well as the Learfield Sport Properties multi-media rights agreement with the Hoosiers.
