The team competed unofficially in the Big Ten Conference from 1974-82 when the conference officially recognized women s varsity sports. Several individuals represented the team at the NCAA Regional championship and the team recorded its best score on record (186.90) in its last season of competition (1990-91) and rated as high as 15th in the national rankings before budget cuts caused it to be one of five sports discontinued at the university. 1975-76 Qualified as a team for MAIAW Regionals finishing 6th; placed 21st at Nationals 1976-77 Marni Marth (Rockford, IL) scored a 33.60 in all-around competition to finish 55th at the AIAW national championships in 1977. Lori Murphy (Neenah, WI) scored a 33.75 to finish 56th in all-around competition at the 1977 AIAW national championships. 1981-82 Karen Julie (New City, NY) and Cindy Sipe (Winetka, IL) qualify for regionals. 1983-84 Wisconsin finishs 6th at Big Ten Championships. Frosh Susan Soldat (Lombard, IL) became the first Badger woman since 1977 to qualify for individual competition at the conference meet. Soldat ended up second on the uneven bars and earned All-Big Ten honors. 1984-85 Wisconsin finishs 6th at Big Ten Championships. Susan Soldat (Lombard, IL) qualifies for the finals in the uneven bars, places third and earns All Big Ten honors. Soldat set school records in the uneven bars (9.45), balance beam (9.15), floor exercise (9.45) and all-around (36.45). The Badgers also set a team score record of 178.20 and event records in all events. 1985-86 Wisconsin finished the season with a 12-7 meet record and fourth-place finish in the Big Ten. The Badgers moved up from their sixth place finish of a year ago as they had their highest finish in nine years. Wisconsin also crowned their first Big Ten Champion as Beth Benevente (Glendale Heights, IL) was a co-champion on the uneven bars with a 9.30 score. Carol Robinson (Urbana, IL) placed fourth on the balance beam with an 8.75 and Rhonda Olson (Madison, WI) tied for sixth on the uneven bars with a 9.0. Benevente and Robinson were named to the All-Big Ten team for their finishes. For the first time since 1982, Wisconsin sent competitors to the NCAA Division I Regionals as Benevente and Olson qualified in the all-around with 36.30 and 35.88 averages, respectively. Olson tied for sixth on the balance beam in the region with a personal best 9.20. Wisconsin continued their record-breaking performances as they set three new school team records. Versus Iowa, the Badgers set a new high team score of 179.40 and a high beam event score of 45.00. They also set a new vault event score of 44.95 at Missouri. Four individual event records were set in 1986 as Robinson and Benevente set a new balance beam record at 9.30. Benevente also set

individual records of 9.35 on the vault, 9.55 on the floor and 36.60 in the allaround.

UW GYMNASTICS HISTORY AND HIGHLIGHTS 1986-87 The Badgers broke three individual event records and five team records as they completed their most successful season ever. Freshman Kim Wright (West Chester, PA) set school records on the balance beam with a 9.60 and in the all-around with a 37.10. Rhonda Olson (Madison, WI) set a Wisconsin record of 9.70 on the uneven bars. As a team the Badgers scored a record 182.30 in a dual meet with Illinois and finished the season with eight of the top ten all-time team scores. During their meet with Illinois, the Badgers also set event records on the beam with a 45.90, on the floor with a 46.45 and tied the vault record of 44.95. Wisconsin capped their season by setting a record of 46.10 on the uneven bars in a dual with Illinois State. The Badgers dropped to sixth in the Big Ten Championships, but Olson earned All-Big Ten honors for tying for third on the uneven bars and Carol Robinson (Urbana, IL) made the finals of that event. Wisconsin finished the season with a 180.50 regional qualifying score, making them one of only a few teams that scored over a 180 and didn't qualify for regionals. Wisconsin did send two individuals to regional competition as Kim Wright and Rhonda Olson qualified in the all-around. 1987-88 The Badger women's gymnastics program continued to show improvement, setting five team records and two individual records, and tying one individual record. Junior Beth Benevente (Glendale Heights, IL) set a new record on the vault, scoring a 9.55 in the NCAA Central Regional Gymnastics Championship. Benevente also set a new record in the All-around competition with a 37.35 against Northern and Eastern Michigan Universities. Sophomore Lisa Peterson (Palos Hills, IL) tied Benevente's school record in the floor exercise, scoring a 9.55 against Northern and Eastern Michigan and again against Auburn. The Badgers had a record-setting meet against Auburn, setting a new school record with a 184.65 team score. They set a new vault record with a 45.60, a new uneven bar record with a 46.85, and a new record in the floor exercise with a 46.75 - all against a 19-ranked Auburn team. The other Badger team record was set in the meet with Eastern and Northern Michigan Universities, when they scored a 46.45 in the balance beam. The Badgers finished 5th at the Big Ten Championship and qualified two individuals for the NCAA Central Regional Championship. Benevente finished 19th with a 36.55, while Peterson finished 23rd in the All-Around competition with a 36.05, but both failed to qualify as individuals for the NCAA National Championship. 1988-89 For the first time since the 1976-77 season the Wisconsin women's gymnastics team qualified for the Central Region Championship. The Badgers finished sixth among seven teams with a score of 182.40. At the Big Ten Championship, Wisconsin also turned in a sixth place finish with a score of 183.30 and freshman Suzy Dickerhoff (Muncie, IN) qualified for the Big Ten individual competition, placing seventh with a score of 9.25. The Badger squad continued to change the numbers in the Wisconsin record books, setting four new team records and three individual records. As a team Wisconsin scored a school record 186.75 points in a dual meet with Iowa and Michigan, and team event records in the vault (46.90), Beam (46.65) and floor exercise (47.45). Senior Beth Benevente (Glendale Heights, IL) topped her own school record in the all-around, compiling a 38.00, and also set a new school record in the vault with a 9.60. Sophomore Michele Hernandez (Hoffman Estates, IL) set a school record in the floor exercise with a 9.65.

UW GYMNASTICS HISTORY AND HIGHLIGHTS 1989-90 Although, the Badgers just missed qualifying for the NCAA Central Region Championship as a team, this year's squad recorded 31 individual performances which rank among the top-10 best marks in program history. As a team, Wisconsin had six scores ranking among the top-10 including a school record 186.90 against Missouri on March 17. A team record of 47.25 in the balance beam was also set in January. Individual school records were claimed by freshman Elizabeth Mahaney in the vault (9.80), and the all-around with a 38.15. Mahaney also tied the school record in the balance beam with a 9.60. Junior Michele Hernandez set the school record in floor exercise with a 9.70. Hernandez and Mahaney qualified as individuals for the NCAA Central Region Championship. Hernandez capped off a brilliant season tying her personal best in the all-around with a score of 37.75 to finish seventh. In individual events, Hernandez scored a 9.50 in the vault, a 9.30 in the bars, a 9.30 in the balance beam, and a 9.65 in the floor exercise. Mahaney finished 15th at the regional meet with a 37.15. Her individual event scores were a 9.55 in the vault, 9.50 in the uneven bars, a 9.00 in the balance beam, and a 9.10 in the floor exercise. Mahaney became the UW's first Big Ten all-around champion as Wisconsin tied its best showing at a Big Ten meet placing fourth overall with a 186.05. Mahaney topped a field of 57 competitors with a school record 38.15 to become Wisconsin's first all-around champion. In individual event competition, Mahaney tied for second in the vault with a 9.60, tied for fifth in the floor exercise with a 9.60, and placed sixth in the balance beam after a fall with a 9.00. Mahaney's incredible freshman season, was highlighted by being named Big Ten Freshman of the Year and Gymnast of the Year by a vote of the Big Ten Coaches. Mahaney also became the first Badger women gymnast to be recognized by the conference as Big Ten Gymnast of the Month, having received that honor twice this season for the months of January and March. Three Badgers received All-Big Ten Academic team honors. Seniors Kim Wright and Lisa Peterson, and sophomore Lea DeCarolis. Peterson, a physical therapy major with a 3.425 g.p.a. is a three-time All- Big Ten Academic Team member. Wright, a dietetics major with a 3.04, and DeCarolis, a letters and science major with a 3.682 g.p.a., are first time academic team members. 1990-91 The 1990-91 season closed the books on the 17-year old women's gymnastics program as the UW Athletic Board voted to cut five sports in order to meet budget demands. The gymnasts finished in a flurry with a record setting season that saw every Wisconsin team record broken. The Badgers recorded a school record team score of 187.60 in a meet against in Iowa and rated as high as 15th in the national rankings. The Badgers placed a disappointing sixth at the Big Ten Championship after sporting a 5-1 record against conference opponents in the regular season. Freshman Meredith Chang (Honolulu, HI) became the UW's third Big Ten Champion, tying for first in the uneven bars with a career-best 9.65. Sophomore Holly Bremer (Kalamazoo, MI) qualified for the Central Region Championship, placing 22nd overall with 37.175. The Badgers set 24 individual marks that rank among the top 10 all-time at Wisconsin, including school records performances by senior Michele Hernandez (Hoffman Estates, IL) in the floor exercise (9.75) and Hernandez, Chang and Lea DeCarolis (Chalfont, PA) in the balance beam (9.60).

Wisconsin Women's Gymnastics History and Highlights The Wisconsin women's gymnastic team is spinning on a turntable of 31 new records. During the past three years of competition, the Badgers have compiled 31 school records and are looking to add to that stack this year. Last season the Badger squad broke three individual event records and five team records as they completed their most successful season ever on the books. Freshman Kim Wright set school records on the balance beam with a 9.60, and in the all-around with a 37.10. Rhonda Olson set a Wisconsin record of 9.70 on the uneven bars. As a team, Wisconsin scored a school record 182.30 in a dual meet with Illinois, and replaced eight of the top ten all-time team scores in various meets during the year. During their meet with Illinois, the Badgers also set three team event records on the beam with a 45.90, on the floor with a 46.45, and tied the vault record of 44.95. Wisconsin capped its season by setting a record of 46.10 on the uneven bars in a dual with Illinois State.
