1 Third International Guitar Competition Maurizio Biasini San Francisco, January 14-17, 2016 In collaboration with the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Rules and regulations Art. 1 - ORGANIZING COMMITTEE The Musical Association International Guitar Competition Maurizio Biasini organizes the third edition of a competition for classical guitar performance. The competition is open to solo guitarists of all nationalities, born after January 1 st 1980, who are at the outset of their career. Art. 2. - APPLICATION Application forms can be downloaded from www.guitarcompetitionbiasini.org. The following documents should be submitted together with your application: a) Curriculum vitae (CV), in English. b) Documentation and copies of certificates concerning any awards, degrees, a few sample programs of concerts, reviews or any further documents supporting your application. c) A link to your audition performance (see Art. 5). d) Complete program of the music chosen to be performed. A copy of any unpublished scores must be included. No corrections and supplements will be accepted after August 31 st, 2015. e) Receipt of payment of the registration fee. f) Copy of an official identification document. g) A high-quality digital photograph (at least 300dpi) of head and shoulders only, which is uncopyrighted. All documents, including the signed application form, must be sent by electronic mail to biasinicompetition@gmail.com, no later than August 31 st, 2015. Please consult your nearest American embassy or consulate for advice. The personal data, provided with the application or in any other way will be treated according to article 7 of the Italian Legislative Decree nr. 196/2003 and will be processed both in written form and/or on paper, magnetic, electronic or telematic support only for purposes connected with the organization of the competition. Art. 4 - SELECTION PROCEDURE The preliminary round will be based on the Jury's evaluation of recorded videos containing the required program. All participants must accept, without appeal, the decision of the Jury, regarding admission to the competition. Art. 5 - PROGRAM The competition consists of three rounds: a preliminary round (through a video audition procedure), a semi-final round, and a final round. No fewer than 12 competitors will be admitted to the semi-final round. Subsequently, three competitors will proceed to the final round. Preliminary round Applicants must submit a link to an unedited web-hosted video recording (Vimeo or YouTube) of the following repertoire: - Heitor Villa-Lobos: a choice between Etude III, VII, or IX (Ed. Max Eschig, edited by Frédéric Zigante) - Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco: one of the 24 Caprichos de Goya para la guitarra, opus 195 (Ed. Berben) - Manuel Maria Ponce: Sonata romantica, 1 st movement (Ed. Schott, edited by Segovia) - Free choice piece(s) not to exceed 5 minutes The recording should be without interruption and taken by one fixed camera to give a front view with the applicant s face and hands clearly visible. Please make sure your recording has high

quality audio. Videos must be recorded after January 1, 2015 and must be viewable in the US and in Europe. Competitors selected for the semi-final round will be notified by electronic mail not later than November 6, 2015. Semi-final round (open to the public) An individual program of up to 25 minutes which includes the following pieces: - Johann Sebastian Bach: two dance movements or one prelude and one dance movement from the four lute suites (Suite BWV 995, 996,997, 1006, any edition). The prelude may also be taken from BWV 998 (any edition). - Sergio Assad: commissioned composition (available by June 2015) The individual program should include at least one composition from a different stylistic period than those of the mandatory program. Pieces played in the preliminary round may not be repeated Final round (open to the public) An individual program of 30 minutes which includes the following composition for guitar and orchestra: - Joaquin Rodrigo: Concierto de Aranjuez (Ed. Schott or Ed. Joaquin Rodrigo) In addition, the program must include the commissioned composition by Sergio Assad (available by June 2015). Pieces played in the preceding rounds may not be repeated. Each finalist will have at least 60 minutes rehearsal time with orchestra on the day of the final or on the preceding day. All solo pieces have to be played entirely from memory. For the compulsory pieces, the competitors must refer to the recommended editions. Art. 6 - COMPETITION PROCEDURE a. The competition will be held from January 14 to 17, 2016. The candidates must register on January 14, between 5 and 7 pm, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, 50 Oak Street, San Francisco, CA 94102, USA. To register, candidates must present a valid identification document. b. On January 15, at 9 am, at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, there will be an orientation meeting at which the Jury members and the competitors will be presented. c. The semi-final round will be held on: January 15 10 am 1 pm 2.30 pm 6 pm January 16 10 am 1.30 pm The final round will take place on: January 17 2 pm 5 pm d. Performance order in each round will be determined by a random alphabet drawing. 3

e. The semi-final and final rounds are open to the public. Once a performance has started, there will be no access to the room. Art. 7 - THE JURY a. The international Jury will be composed of at least five (5) members from various countries and of established reputation in the music world. b. The Organizing Committee may, at any time, call for new members to take part in the Jury or substitute existing members. c. If necessary, the Jury may change the day or time of any competitor's performance. d. Competitors may be interrupted at any time during their performance, if the Jury considers it suitable. e. Members of the Jury who are currently teaching any of the contestants or have done so in the course of the year 2015 (from January 1 st ), must refrain from discussions and abstain from voting for their own student. The abstention shall be clearly recorded in the minutes. In compliance with this, during the first meeting, each member of the Jury must sign a statement as to his/her personal situation towards the competitors with reference to the above. Art. 8 - ADMISSION TO THE SEMI-FINAL ROUND a. The selection of the competitors to be admitted to the semi-final (no fewer than 12) will be made by the Jury according to the sum of the scores received by each commissioner. The scores will remain confidential and will not be made public. b. In the event of a tie, the President's vote will be decisive. c. All competitors must accept, without appeal, the decision of the Jury, regarding admission to the subsequent round. 4 Art. 9 - ADMISSION TO THE FINAL ROUND a. The selection of the competitors to be admitted to the final round (a maximum of 3) will be made by the Jury according to the sum of the scores received by each commissioner. The scores will remain confidential and will not be made public. b. In the event of a tie, the President's vote will be decisive. d. All competitors must accept, without appeal, the decision of the Jury, regarding admission to the final round. Art. 10 - AWARDING OF PRIZES a) The first prize cannot be shared. In special cases, the Jury may award the remaining prizes equally. The Jury reserves the right not to award the first prize, in case the performances fail to

5 reach the necessary artistic level. All prizes will be awarded in the final round. b) All competitors must accept, without appeal, the decisions of the Jury, regarding the awarding of prizes. Winners intending to publish their results shall specifically mention the prize awarded, fully respecting the official decisions of the Jury. Special prizes will be awarded to the competitors at the Jury s discretion. Art. 11 - COPYRIGHT All stages of the competition will be recorded. Participants agree to waive any recording and/or photo rights in or on any medium, during any aspect of the competition and consent to the unlimited and unrestricted use of their name and image in any format or medium for use by the Associazione Concorso Chitarristico Internazionale Maurizio Biasini. Art. 12 LEGAL AGREEMENT By signing the application form, the competitor agrees to all rules and regulations as presented above. In case of any disagreement or differences of interpretation, the English text will be held as legally valid. PRIZES 1 st prize: $ 12 000.00 (twelve thousand US dollars) + 3 concerts: one in Bologna (I), one in Basel (CH) and one in Paris (CH) 2 nd prize: $ 5 000.00 (five thousand US dollars) 3 rd prize: $ 3 000.00 (three thousand US dollars) All awards are subject to applicable taxes. All semi-finalists and finalists will receive an Honorary Diploma Award.
