Your "Cause to be honored" A n honorary doctorate is entirely legitim ate and the title conferred m ay be used like any other. The degree is aw arded to those w ho have dem onstrated a H onoris Causa, or cause to be honored. F or a sm all "support honorarium " (donation) you m ay participate in our H onorary D octorate Program. This program is offered only to a select group of highly accom plished individuals such as yourself. A s a professional, a degree -- or additional degree -- w ill allow you to m ake a greater im pact. The expedient w ay of show ing the w orld your know ledge, abilities, experience and talents is w ith your degree and use of your titles. W hy D o Successful People D esire H onorary D egrees? The honorary degree is the highest aw ard that the U niversity confers. It is given to honor individuals w ho have distinguished them selves through extraordinary achievem ents in scholarship, the professions, or other creative activities, w hether or not they are w idely know n by the general public; to honor alum ni and other individuals w ho have m ade outstanding contributions to the w elfare and developm ent of the U niversity or the com m unities of w hich they are a part; to recognize exceptional acts of philanthropy to the university; and to elevate the university in the eyes of the w orld by honoring individuals w ho are w idely know n and highly regarded for achievem ents in their respective fields of endeavor. W ho w ouldn t w ant to be included in such a group of distinguished individuals? W ho w ouldn t consider them selves privileged to receive an aw ard considered higher than a Ph.D.? U.S. Presidents, Senators, Suprem e Court Justices, foreign diplom ats, m edical doctors, scientists, journalists, novelists, entertainers, arts, and business executives have all proudly accepted honorary doctorate degrees. M any outstanding executives and entrepreneurs never had the opportunity to pursue a form al education. The honorary degree is a m ethod to recognize real w orld education and to form ally bestow upon recipients the respect they deserve D ream s can often become e challenging, but challenges are w hat w e live for. Travis W hite

W hy D o Colleges and U niversities A w ard H onorary D egrees? To Recognize D istinguished Faculty and E ducators Surveys indicate in recent years, the m ajority of honorary degrees have been aw arded to faculty m em bers and adm inistrators of other colleges or universities. It is hoped the recipient w ill encourage his or her institution in future years to grant a sim ilar honor on a faculty m em ber at the aw arding institution. For Public Relations Purposes Colleges and universities, like alm ost all organizations, benefit from favorable publicity. The aw arding of an honorary degree to a celebrity invariably generates publicity for not only the celebrity but also the institution. Institutions have to be particularly careful in this category. Central State U niversity aw arded M ike Tyson, the boxer, an honorary degree in 1989. G iven his subsequent legal problem s, they probably regret this decision. To M aintain G ood R elations w ith G overnm ent N early every m ajor politician has one or m ore honorary degrees. The aw ard (generally) gives favorable publicity to the politician and the school. M ost colleges and universities in the U nited States depend on governm ent either funding, through grants or guaranteed student loans. A s such, it is alw ays prudent for an institution to m aintain good relations w ith elected representatives. To Raise Capital A ll universities or colleges can alw ays use additional m oney to fund scholarships, building funds, athletic program s, or countless other program s. Y ou have pow ers you never dream ed of. Y ou can do things you never thought you could do. There are no lim itations in w hat you can do except the lim itations of your ow n m ind. -- D arw in P. K ingsley

F O R E W O R D ON CIU S H O N O RA R Y D O CTO R A TE / PhD (h.c) H onorary D octorates are given to those individuals w ho deserve it for their hum anitarian, scientific or entrepreneurship excellence. H onorary aw ards are lim ited to exceptional candidates w ho can dem onstrate genuine achievem ent. E very case is carefully analyzed. The proposal m ust be supported by the corresponding Cam bridge International U niversity, U SA delegation. The H onorary D octorate has a long history and practically every university in the w orld has aw arded H onorary D octorates to celebrities, politicians, m em bers of the business com m unity and philanthropists. The H onorary D octorate requires no academ ic w ork and entitles the recipient to use the title "D octor", though this is optional and w ill depend on local custom or etiquette. The honorary Ph.D. - form ally called a P h.d. honoris causa - is correctly abbreviated Ph.D. (h.c.) It should never just be abbreviated Ph.D., w hich w ould indicate an academ ic doctorate. The honorary Ph.D. used to be a popular aw ard given by m any universities. F or a tim e, honorary Ph.D. aw ards from state-recognized universities becam e rare and the degree w as virtually only aw arded by private institutions. In recent years, honorary Ph.D. aw ards have becom e popular again and have been m ade by local, regional, state and private universities around the w orld including m any w orld-fam ous universities. In view of the rising international acceptability of the honorary Ph.D., CIU is now m aking these aw ards available to a strictly lim ited num ber of deserving individuals w ho have m ade a genuine contribution to their respective fields of interest or endeavor. A query w e often have is w hether PhD or Ph.D. is correct. In contem porary British style full stops (periods) m ay be om itted - PhD - though in A m erican style they are included - Ph.D. E ither style m ay be used according to preference. B oth are correct. N o transcript is issued for honorary degrees. N o academ ic subject is m entioned on the honorary doctorate degree certificate, though m ention m ay be m ade of the graduate's contribution to a particular field of endeavor, e.g. "in recognition of services to the local com m unity". The honorary Ph.D. is aw arded in a particular field, norm ally for contributions to that field or for supporting it in a notable w ay. Since the holder of an honorary doctorate degree from CIU has been duly scrutinized, he or she m ay accept and w elcom ed as a senior m em ber of the CIU alum ni. Im possibilities are m erely things, w hich w e have not yet learned. -- Charles W. Chesnutt

This privilege respects and honors the accom plished individual w ho m ay not have had the opportunity of an early university education and allow s such persons an accelerated route to consolidation of their higher academ ic standing. The H onorary D octorate m ay be used by businesses and organizations to rew ard high-perform ing personnel or as a retirem ent gift or aw ard for a special occasion. In com m on w ith m any other private distance-learning institutions, a fee is required for an honorary doctorate from CIU. W e are aw are that there are a num ber of less than reputable organizations from w hom it is possible to obtain an honorary "degree" for a ludicrously sm all sum of m oney. Som e of these organizations even claim they are religious, w hich m ight be legally true but w hich is m eaningless and irrelevant as far as degrees are concerned. Those in the know can easily identify such cheap and shoddy "aw ards", and they w ill eventually do you m ore harm than good if you feature them on your resum e. If such organizations offer any teaching at all, it is usually of poor quality w ith the m inim um effort needed to obtain a so-called taught degree. W e are sure you w ould prefer your honorary aw ard to be from an institution w hich also aw ards genuine, legally valid academ ic degrees and w hich does not operate under a quasireligious banner for tax reasons. E ventually som eone you know, perhaps a client, custom er, associate or em ployer, is going to check out your honorary aw ard. Initially, w e w ere reluctant to offer honorary aw ards at all and so, w e set out to discourage the sort of clientele w ho w ere just searching for a quick and cheap w ay to becom e "respectable". O ur attitude rem ains the sam e, yet w e now feel w e w ent too far in the direction of m aking the honorary aw ard hard to obtain. Instead of m aking it less financially accessible than a taught degree, w e are placing the honorary degree on equal footing. H ow ever, certain partial bursaries are available from tim e to tim e for clergy and other sim ilar professions: each application is considered on its m erits. W e urge you to seriously consider the CIU option vis-à-vis the offers you m ight receive from others. R em em ber that not everyone w ill qualify for a CIU honorary degree, and w e m ust have details of the candidate's background, accom plishm ents, etc. before giving a prelim inary decision. I

D octor of Philosophy (H onoris causa) PhD (h.c) Cam bridge International U niversity grants an H onorary D octoral D egree to distinguished individuals w ho apply and qualify by m eeting our standards. Cam bridge International U niversity recognizes individual achievem ent and outstanding contributions to various applied fields through our unique H O N O R IS CA U SA doctoral degree program. O ur list of honorary doctors keeps grow ing. It is in fact the w orld's m ost com prehensive list of honorary doctors - a very illustrious club of successful and distinguished m em bers of our society - w orldw ide. A m ong them recipients like the G erm an president Johannes R au and m any others high ranking renow ned achievers from all lifestyles and m any countries. The ow ner of an H onorary D octorate is given the legal right to use "D octor" before his or her nam e. It s tim e for Y O U, to get Y OU R D octor H onoris Causa, Y OU R H onorary D octorate, w hich carries the sam e title, "D octor" that s used for a regular (earned) degree. Prestige is guaranteed. Just check into a hotel as "John B rian" and as "D r. John B rian". The w ay you w ill be treated is trem endously different! Your life as a D octor w ill change dram atically. It w ill get easier; you w ill receive the am ount of respect a D octor deserves. W ell, the advantages are countless. Think about it for a m om ent. M ichael Jackson has one, F rank Sinatra, E lla F itzgerald, B ob H ope, R obert R edford, M ike Tyson, B ill Clinton, and G eorge Bush and so on. Sad enough one has to be either rich or fam ous or both to attract the offer of a university. M ore than one thousand traditional universities aw ard H onorary D octorates. H ow ever, the standards, conditions and fees of their H O N O R A RY D E G REE PO L ICY are ridiculously high. A n education is not how m uch you have com m itted to m em ory, or even how m uch you know. It is being able to differentiate betw een w hat you know and w hat you do not. - A natole France

W hat w e are doing at Cam bridge International U niversity puts into perspective som ew hat, the w hole aspect of the real purpose of honorary degrees. In fact, in our process w e actually are recognizing people for their societal accom plishm ents rather than for the typical recognition of a m onetary relationship or as a publicity stunt. W e feel that m any distinguished people deserve an honorary degree, not just the rich and fam ous. Y our H onorary D egree w ill stem from a legitim ate, renow ned and thriving U niversity! Cam bridge International U niversity uses this program to raise funds for som e of its research projects. (Through a reasonable handling fee that applies) The university m aintains a com plete and perm anent record on each H onorary D octor and responds prom ptly to requests for validation w hen authorized by the recipient. Y our nam e w ill also be published on the CIU 's list of recipients of H onorary D egrees. (O ptional, it is up to you to be published or you choose N OT to appear on that list) H ow to apply?
