Each YMC Board (one meets in Santa Maria and one meets in Santa Barbara) grants $15,000 to youth-led projects that address issues affecting young people in Santa Barbara County. Each YMC board is led by two Youth Facilitators who are previous YMC board members. Since 2008, YMC has awarded $245,490 to over 125 youth-led groups throughout Santa Barbara County. About YMC 18-19 Board Cohort Each YMC board member commits to be part of the board from July 2018 to May 2019. YMC members meet twice a month to build their personal and community leadership skills and carry out a grant cycle. Members learn about philanthropy and grant-making. They discuss and analyze current issues facing young people in Santa Barbara County. Members then outreach regarding the grant cycle. Board members receive grant applications from youth-led groups and review proposed project ideas. They conduct interviews of applicants and make decisions as a group about which projects to give grants to. They participate in follow-up including grant awards and site visits. Board members develop important leadership skills including meeting planning and facilitation, outreach and public speaking, program planning, proposal evaluation and individual and group decision-making. YMC MEMBER REQUIREMENTS * Be between the ages of 13 and 19 as of 9/1/19 * Live or go to school in Santa Barbara County * Attend mandatory training 7/28-7/29 * Attend meetings twice a month^: 6:00p.m. -8:00 p.m. from Aug.'18 to May '19 Santa Maria Mtgs: 1 st & 3 rd Wednesdays. Santa Barbara Mtgs: 1 st & 3 rd Thursdays. * Participate as grantor in YMC Grant Cycle August 18- May 19 * Work with diverse teens, be a leader, and have FUN! ^Other meetings include two additional Saturday meetings. There is also some independent work between meetings. Who gets selected? The goal is to establish a 15-19 member board that reflects the diversity of young people in the county. Youth are selected from different neighborhoods, schools, grades, academic levels, and life experiences. Youth are encouraged to apply regardless of race, gender, religion, economic status, sexual orientation, academic status, physical/mental ability, ethnicity, language spoken, or immigration status. $300 STIPEND Participating in YMC is voluntary, but you do get a $300 stipend for your participation in recognition of your time commitment. The stipend is based on participation throughout the board term. Read YMC s member requirements to confirm that YMC is a good match for you. Requirements are available on our website: www.fundforsantabarbara.org or by calling THE FUND office. 2. Make sure you can attend the MANDATORY County-Wide Training DATE and TIME TBD 3. Complete the following application in BLACK ink or type. Electronic copies in WORD format are available on our website or by contacting our office. If you need more space to answer the questions, add one additional page. If you are using a separate sheet of paper, label it with your name. If you fill out the application on a computer, use a 12pt font and DO NOT exceed the three page limit for the essay questions. 4. Sign the YMC Board Commitment Statement on the last page. 5. Get your parent/guardian to sign the Commitment Statement on the last page. A parent/guardian signature is required by law if you are less than 18 years old. If you are 18 or older, it is not necessary, but if you live with them it would be nice to have so that we know that they support you in participating.
