MATAGORDA COUNTY FAIR & LIVESTOCK ASSOCIATION 2018 HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION PLEASE NOTE: ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED TO THE MCFLA FAIR OFFICE BY NOON, FRIDAY, JANUARY 12, 2018-There will be no exceptions to this deadline. INSTRUCTIONS TO APPLICANTS: Please do not bind or staple your original application or copies, paper clipped only. Make 5 copies of your completed application, excluding 5 x 7 the picture. Place the original application and the 5 application copies (6 total) plus the 5 x 7 picture (only 1 picture is needed) in a single sealed envelope and submit it to the MCFLA Fair office by Noon, Friday, January 12, 2018. ***There will be no exceptions to this deadline*** If any required items are missing, your application will not be considered for a scholarship. Read application carefully and follow instructions as requested. Failure to follow directions will result in disqualification. EACH APPLICATION MUST INCLUDE: 1. The applicant survey 2. A completed Fair Event Participation Record (included below) 3. An autobiography (must be typed) not to exceed one page 4. Three letters of recommendation (two must be from outside the school system) 5. An official copy of recent high school transcript (the copies you make must be front and back) TIP: transcript orders sometimes take time to process, pre-planning must be utilized and school holidays must be considered 6. CRITERIA AND SCHOLARSHIP GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF MATAGORDA COUNTY FAIR & LIVESTOCK ASSOCIATION COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENTS (GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL SENIORS) 1. Level of involvement in agricultural activities including 4-H, FFA, FHA, and the MCFLA for the past four years. (Involvement includes projects, livestock projects, home economics projects, etc.) 2. Scholarship and goal orientation to include need. 3. Proper completion of application. 4. Academic ability (grades, including most recent transcript, class rank, ACT, and/or SAT scores). 5. Communication skills (written and oral). 6. How well applicants represent themselves in the autobiography, resume, and interview. 7. Interview of finalist is determined by the scholarship committee. An interview will be conducted by a panel of three to five judges. These judges with various career backgrounds in agriculture, business, education, etc., do not reside in Matagorda County. 8. All protests concerning Matagorda County Fair Scholarship Applicants must be submitted prior to interviewing and be accompanied by a $150 cash deposit. The deposit will be returned ONLY if the protest is upheld. After Scholarship Interviews, the committee decision is final and not subject for protest. Selection procedures will not be interrupted for protest investigation. The protest will be reviewed by at least (5) members of the Fair Board. The ruling of the Fair Board Directors will be final. Both sides of the protest must be present at the time of the protest. There will be no anonymous protests accepted. Every scholarship applicant agrees that the conclusion reached by the Fair Board Directors shall be final, without any recourse against the Matagorda County Fair and Livestock Association, Board of Directors, Division Chairman, Superintendent, or Committeemen. ELIGIBILITY: 1. Any graduating high school senior in Matagorda County who is a U.S. Citizen, and desires to further his or her education through an institution of higher learning is eligible to apply. 2. Any student who has been involved in the Matagorda County Fair & Livestock Association and who has been involved in a 4-H Club, High School FFA Chapter, or FHA, is eligible to apply. ANY STUDENT WHO FAILS TO MEET THESE REQUIREMENTS WILL BE DISQUALIFIED IMMEDIATELY! Page 5 of 6

DISTRIBUTION OF SCHOLARSHIP MONEY 1. Scholarship recipients may collect one scholarship payment per each Spring, Summer & Fall semester(s). For the first payment, recipients must provide a statement of tuition & fees or proof of enrollment for the college they are attending to the Fair Office before payment is received. For all payments thereafter, recipients must maintain a 2.5 GPA and provide the Fair Office with a copy of their transcript, along with statement of tuition & fees or proof of enrollment before payment is received. 2. Scholarships will be paid out over a four year period. A minimum of $500.00 or a maximum of $875.00 will be issued per semester. 3. Scholarship payout will be determined by the amount of scholarship awarded. Recipients will receive a letter with detailed information on their payout amounts. 4. If the recipient produces as associate's degree after two years of college they are still eligible to receive the remainder of their scholarship award. 5. If the recipient produces a bachelor s degree prior to the four year period they are still eligible to receive the remainder of their scholarship award. 6. Tuition statements will remain in the fair office for each recipient until all scholarship funds are exhausted or the four year limitation has passed. 7. Scholarship money can be used to pay for books, tuition, and fees (including university approved housing). 8. All unused funds will revert back to the scholarship fund if not used within the four year period following the scholarship award unless other arrangements have been approved by the board prior to the four year limitation. Please submit the original application with one 5 x 7 picture along with 5 additional copies, each separated with paper clips in one sealed envelope with applicant s name written on the front to the MCFLA Fair office by NOON, Friday, January 12, 2018.
