In addition to the daily practice of cooking and eating, many Oregonians also think, talk, and write about food. Might our relationship to food production, preparation, and consumption create deeper connections to our place and our neighbors and a pathway to increased self-sufficiency? This is the focus of We are what we eat: connecting food and citizenship, a free conversation with Wendy Willis on Monday, May 2nd at 6:30 p.m. Willis is a poet, essayist, and national leader in civic engagement and collaborative governance. She serves as executive director of Kitchen Table Democracy, a national nonprofit organization housed at Portland State University devoted to improving democratic governance. Her first book of poems, Blood Sisters of the Republic, was released in 2012. The final program of the series is planned for the first Monday of June. On June 6th it will be Going Solo: the value of solitude in a social world In today s busy world, many people struggle to find solitude and to be comfortable with it when they do. This is the focus of Going Solo: the value of solitude in a social world, a free conversation with Jennifer Allen on Monday, June 6, 2016 at 6:30 p.m. Contact the library at 541-296-2815 if you have any questions.

The planned book for June will be Station Eleven, by Emily St. John Mandel. The Mystery/Crime book club vestigators are called in to the scene of a suspicious death in a rural village south of Montreal. Jane Neal, a local fixture in the tiny hamlet of Three Pines, just north of the U.S. border, has been found dead in the woods. The locals are certain it's a tragic hunting accident and nothing more, but Gamache smells something foul in these remote woods, and is soon certain that Jane Neal died at the hands of someone much more sinister than a careless bow hunter.

Monthly conversations about the end of life This month s conversation will focus on Death with Dignity. What can we do to prepare for our own end of life care? Are there options? Future conversations will based on what you want to know about. Julie Reynolds and Colleen Ballinger will lead this recurring, facilitated discussion on one of the hardest things to talk about: death and dying. One block through time One block through time, the history and archaeology of Chinatown in The Dalles, will be presented by Eric B. Gleason at 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 5 th in the main part of the library. The talk synthesizes information gleaned from historical background research and archaeological excavations on one block of downtown The Dalles, where a Chinese community coalesced from 1880-1940. Photo- Movies at the library Yes, we really do show movies at the library; we even have popcorn available (while it lasts). The next movie, Norm of the north, will be shown on Saturday, May 14th at 1:30 pm, in the meeting room. TedTalk discussion group graphs and documents from the Exclusion Act files at National Archives, supplemented by newspaper articles, map illustrations, and the artifacts and features found during excavation, trace the story of the development and abandonment of the Chinese business district in The Dalles. Gleason is a graduate of Washington State University, a professional archaeologist, and a resident of The Dalles. He is the owner and restorer of the last standing Chinese-operated business building in The Dalles. Like a book club without the book. Parents: please screen this talk to determine if it is appropriate for your youth. The discussion on May 5 th will be Brené Brown: The power of vulnerability. V O L U M E 9, I S S U E 0 5 What s happening at Southern Wasco County Library P A G E 8 Hoop dancer, Kevin Locke Renowned hoop dancer, Kevin Locke, will do three performances in Maupin on May 13th. He will do a school assembly program at 9:30 a.m. at the South Wasco County School District. Followed by a Flute Soiree, a short flute concert, at the Southern Wasco County Library at 1:00 p.m. that afternoon. That evening at 7:00 p.m. there will be a performance featuring hoop dancing, flute music and story telling at the high school gym, located at 699 Fourth Street, in Maupin. Kevin Locke is known throughout the world as a visionary Hoop Dancer, a traditional storyteller, the preeminent player of the indigenous Northern Plains flute, cultural ambassador, recording artist, and educator. Kevin is Lakota (Hunkpapa Band of Lakota Sioux) and Anishinabe. While his early instructions were received from his immediate family and community, from his extended family in every part of the world Kevin has learned many lessons in global citizenship and how we each can draw from our individual heritages to create a vibrant, evolving global civilization embracing and celebrating our collective heritage. Kevin Locke is acknowledged to be the pivotal force in the now powerful revival of the indigenous flute tradition, which teetered on the brink of extinction in the latter half of the 20th century. Kevin was awarded a National Heritage Fellowship by the National Endowment for the Arts, which recognized him as a "Master Traditional Artist who has contributed to the shaping of our artistic traditions and to preserving the cultural diversity of the United States." He won the Album of the Year Award at the Native American Music Awards for his CD "Earth Gift" in 2009. As a folk artist he is often characterized as being from a tribal-specific background only. But Kevin draws from deep wellsprings of knowledge, distilled and refined over many generations, yielding a profound sense of the universality of the human spirit and its inclination toward harmony, balance, beauty, peace, and the sacred. Through movement and dance, sound and music, Kevin conveys this universal spirit through his stories, music, humor, and dance, both in performance and workshop and lecture settings. This event is sponsored by the Southern Wasco County Library and made possible through grants from the Wasco County Cultural Trust and Libraries of Eastern Oregon/ArtPlace America. ========================================================================== Maupin Daze on May 21st Maupin will hold it's annual Maupin Daze Event on Saturday, May 21, with various events going on most of the day.
