National Defense Roles Per Title 14, USC the Coast Guard is a military service and a branch of the armed forces of the United States at all times and is authorized to assist any federal agency... performing any activity for which... [the CG] is especially qualified.

National Defense Roles DOD & DOT MOA -- 3 Oct 95, updated Jun 01 Outlines the use of U.S. Coast Guard capabilities in support of the National Military Strategy. Specifies certain roles, missions and functions for the Coast Guard, including port operations, security and defense.

Maritime Homeland Security Mission Statement The United States must have the means to deter, detect, intercept and respond to asymmetric threats, acts of aggression and attacks by terrorists on the American homeland while maintaining our freedoms and sustaining the flow of commerce. United States Coast Guard is the lead Federal agency for Maritime Homeland Security.
