National Health Care Skill Standards 5 Academic foundation Level of education must allow for successful task completion. Communication Must be able to communicate effectively with the patient and health care professionals. Systems Must be familiar with all the services provided by the health care facility.

National Health Care Skill Standards (cont.) 6 Employability skills Must be dependable to obtain and retain job. Legal responsibilities Must be familiar with what the law allows and does not allow. Ethics Must be familiar with and practice in accordance with accepted ethical standards.

Therapeutic Service Careers 12 Clinical medical assisting, nursing, home health care, respiratory care, rehabilitation, and pharmacy. Skills needed include data collection, treatment planning, implementing procedures, and client status evaluation.

Diagnostic Service Careers Skills required include planning, preparation, procedure, evaluation, and reporting. Careers include cardiology, imaging, and radiology. 13

Health Informatics Careers 14 Skills needed include analysis, abstracting and coding, informatics systems, documentation, and operations. Career options include medical records and unit coordination.

Support Services Careers Requires knowledge of aseptic procedures and the importance of maintaining an aesthetically appealing environment. 15

Biotechnology Research and Development Career Pathway 16 Includes highly scientific careers. People generally work in labs. Bioinformatics is the result of merging computer science and biology. Entry education is a 2-year technical degree. Some careers require a 12-year doctoral degree.

Opportunities in Health Care 1-2 Education Levels of Employment Entrepreneurs Choosing a Career Parliamentary Procedure 18

Education 19 High school health science or health occupations courses Prepare you for entry-level employment immediately after graduation from high school. On-the-job training Available for many health careers. However, most require formal education for advancement.

Education (cont.) Technical or career schools Provide training during and beyond high school. Community colleges Usually offer a 2-year associate s degree. University or four-year colleges Offer bachelor s, master s, and doctorate degrees. 20

Education (cont.) Continuing education Requirements vary from state to state and career to career. The health care worker is legally responsible for knowing the continuing education requirements of his or her field. 21

Levels of Employment Health care field can be entered at various levels, depending on education. Additional education can allow further advancement. 22

Entrepreneurs Usually work for themselves. Entrepreneurs include massage therapists, veterinarians, physicians, dentists, and medical transcriptionists. 23

Choosing a Career Perform a career assessment. Obtain information from teachers, career counselors, other professionals, the Internet, friends, and family. 24

Professional Student Organizations Help develop leadership, citizenship, social competencies, and a wholesome attitude. Help strengthen creativity, thinking skills, decision-making abilities, and selfconfidence. Help enhance the quality and relevance of education. Help promote quality of work and pride in occupational excellence. 25

Parliamentary Procedure A set of rules to follow in order to conduct a meeting efficiently. Robert s Rules of Order developed in 1876 by General Henry M. Robert to preserve democracy in organizations. 26
