Grants in 2016 $31.6 million distributed in 2016 to more than 900 charities $5.3 million in response to Community Grant applications Recap of Changes to Community Grants Now three types: One Time Grants new name for short term (usually one year) projects Major Capital Grants ($100,000+) new name for Community Grant requests $100,000 and greater Multi Year Grants new grant type, offered in two categories. This is a two year pilot project 3
Recap to Changes to Community Grants Eligibility Requirements Effective Sept. 2017, final report on previous Community Grant required before submitting a new Community Grant request What s NOT changing? Granting dollars will remain consistent Organizations may apply for one Community Grant per calendar year (exception for Collaborations) We ll continue to support a wide range of projects We re here for you we welcome questions and consultation 4
The Winnipeg Foundation is a project funder Balancing resources with needs of organizations Applying for a grant is a competitive process 360 degree funder, but grants are usually modest In 2016, 80% of applications approved, but less than 50% of amount requested Context for changes The world of philanthropy is changing Donors are giving differently and expecting more reporting Discretionary dollars are shrinking in proportion to overall granting Community needs are increasing; discretionary granting can t keep pace 5
Multi Year Community Grants Multi Year Community Grants general criteria Criteria are consistent with all of our Community Grants Only registered charities are eligible for grants from TWF Projects must primarily benefit the people of Winnipeg Grants are awarded for specific purposes/projects The Winnipeg Foundation does not fund projects retroactively 6
Multi Year Community Grants Two year pilot program (2017 & 2018) Grants of up to three years Two types Program and Capacity Building Requires grant history with The Winnipeg Foundation Multi Year Grants Two stage application process: Stage 1 Applications due April 30, 4:30 pm Notification of status by May 15; those that meet requirements invited to submit Stage 2 Stage 2 Applications due June 30, 4:30 pm Notification of decision in September 7
Multi Year Community Grants Two types: Multi Year Program Grants For programs that have received two or more consecutive Community Grants Maximum request = maximum amount previously awarded Multi Year Capacity Building Grants For staffing to strengthen administrative capacity, to better fulfill the organization s mission Maximum request $50,000/year ($150,000 total) Organizations not invited to submit Stage 2 application may apply for a One Time Grant in the same calendar year (ie Sept.) for a different project. Invitation to submit Stage 2 application does not guarantee funding; it simply means that we are interested in learning more. 8

Multi Year Program Grants Stage 2 Application By invitation only Similar to One Time Community Grant application: Program description, purpose and goals Evidence of need How you will implement the program How you will measure impact Community involvement Long term goals and financial sustainability Attachments: budget (for 3 years), financial statements, board list, operating budget Capacity Building Grants at The Winnipeg Foundation Capacity Building Grants enhance an organization s internal effectiveness at achieving its mission Through One Time Community Grants, The Winnipeg Foundation considers capacity building initiatives, including: Strategic planning/communications and Marketing Plans Board and staff development Technical needs, such as specialized software Staffing 10
Multi Year Capacity Building Grants Funding Resilience To assist organizations to acquire, maintain or enhance administrative staffing to create and sustain effective, efficient and resilient organizations Examples of administrative staffing: executive director, administrative support, communications, finance At this time, fundraising staff will not be considered Maximum request per year = $50,000 Multi Year Capacity Building Grants Stage 1 Application Brief description of organization, including year established, number of board members and paid staff Amount requested (total over 3 years) Job title of proposed staff position Brief description of how the position will strengthen organization s administrative capacity 11
Multi Year Capacity Building Grants Stage 2 Application By invitation only Current capacity: strengths and challenges Describe staff position, including roles and responsibilities Organization s human resources policies Need for position and how it fits with organizational capacity building goals Multi Year Capacity Building Grants Stage 2 Application Outcomes Capacity improvements as a result of this grant Organizational outcomes it will contribute to Long term vision for position, including funding Attachments: Budget (for 3 years), job description, financial statements, Board list, operating budget, organization chart (optional) 12
After a Grant is Awarded After a Grant is Awarded Successful applications will be approved for three years of funding Grant will be paid annually: Year 1 will be paid after receipt of Terms of Grant Agreement Year 2 will be paid after receipt of a satisfactory interim report Year 3 will be paid after receipt of a satisfactory interim report 13
After a Grant is Awarded Final report will be expected at the end of Year 3 Organizations must wait one year after the conclusion of the multi year agreement before submitting a new Community Grant application As this is a pilot, feedback is welcome Any questions? 14
